One of the all-time foundational fixtures in horror is the vampire. That means over a century’s worth of bloodsuckers in film, in various styles and mythology, from across the globe.
As prominent as this movie monster is, with dozens of adaptations of Bram Stoker’s Dracula alone, there’s an overwhelming selection of vampire fare that makes it easy for many worthwhile gems to fall through the cracks. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to underseen vampire horror movies worth seeking out.

A decade ago, director David Bruckner made a valiant attempt to get a new Friday the 13th film into production… it just didn’t happen. Years later, he did manage to reboot the Hellraiser franchise, with his version of Hellraiser getting released through the Hulu streaming service back in October of 2022. Surprisingly, a year and a half has gone by since that release and we haven’t heard anything about the possibility of a follow-up – until now. During a chat with ComicBook.com, producer Keith Levine confirmed that they are having conversations about making a Hellraiser sequel.
Levine said, “We are trying to do a follow-up and there have been conversations. I can’t exactly say where we’re at in those conversations, but Bruckner is involved in those conversations and we spent a lot of time and energy, I think relaunching that world. A lot of brainpower going into crafting the Cenobite design,...

A few of last year’s most notable horror movies are still without physical media releases, and that’s because they ended up being streaming exclusives. That list includes Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hulu’s Prey, along with Hulu and David Bruckner‘s Hellraiser.

The UK DVD release of Hellraiser (2022) arrives on March 27, 2023. As always, you’ll be able to watch the disc here in the States but you’ll need a Region Free DVD player first.

Hulu’s Hellraiser, a reimagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic from director David Bruckner, will debut in the U.S. exclusively on Hulu on October 7, which means we’re just about one week away from the return of the franchise. Jamie Clayton is playing the iconic Hell Priest in the new movie, a fresh new take on the character played by Doug Bradley in the past.
Clayton explains in a new interview, “This film’s version of the Priest is now a woman, which takes the burden off the audience of trying to compare the performance to Doug Bradley’s iconic portrayal of this character, lovingly known by the fans as Pinhead. There’s a sensuality to her. There’s a grace, there’s a beauty. And a hunger and a desire.”

For several years, the Halloween and Hellraiser franchises were housed at the same studio. That’s no longer the case, so it’s a cool coincidence that we’re getting new additions to both of those franchises this October. A Hellraiser reboot is scheduled to arrive first, set to be released through the Hulu streaming service on October 7th. The new Halloween sequel, Halloween Ends, will follow a week later, reaching both theatres and the Peacock streaming service on October 14th. In anticipation of these release dates, USA Today has unveiled new images from each film: one giving another look at Pinhead, who is played by Jamie Clayton in the Hellraiser reboot, and the other offering a glimpse at the Michael Myers vs. Laurie Strode showdown we’ll be witnessing in Halloween Ends. Both images can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The teaser, embedded above, for the Hellraiser reboot gave us a glimpse of Jamie Clayton (Sense8) as Pinhead, and yesterday we got the first actual picture of Clayton’s Pinhead. Fans have been sharing their opinions on this take on the character… but what does the original Pinhead, Doug Bradley, think about Clayton stepping into the role that made him a genre icon? Our friends at Bloody Disgusting shared what Bradley had to say about the casting while he was making an appearance at the Silver Scream Con in Massachusetts:
It seemed like [a female Pinhead] was coming. It’s an interesting piece of casting. I don’t know Jamie. Of course, they’ve taken even a little bit of a wrinkle in that, because Jamie is transgender. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there was a science fiction series on Netflix several years ago called Sense8, which I was quite a fan of.

Check out the date reveal below, which gives us a sneak peek first-look at “Sense8” actress Jamie Clayton as our brand new Hell Priest. Oh yes, there will be pain…
Hulu has been having a hell of a year on the horror front, kicking things off with Fresh and more recently reviving the Predator franchise with Prey. If the critically acclaimed latter film was any indication, Hulu is taking their horror franchise reboots very seriously, which bodes well for their new Hellraiser movie. We could be in store for a real treat with this one.

The Ritual and The Night House director David Bruckner is rebooting the Hellraiser film franchise with a movie that will be released through the Hulu streaming service. Nearly a year has gone by since we’ve heard anything substantial about the project (which began filming last September), but now we finally have an update: Bruckner’s Hellraiser has been screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association and has officially earned an R rating! The movie got its R for “strong bloody horror violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual content and brief graphic nudity.” That definitely sounds like a proper Hellraiser movie.
Producer David S. Goyer came up with the story for the new film, and the screenplay was written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (Super Dark Times). Based on Clive Barker’s novella The Hellbound Heart, the original Hellraiser was about

There’s a moment somewhere in the middle of “The Night House” where director David Bruckner (“The Ritual”) delivers a scare is so big, that my body couldn’t help but leap out of its seat. And then, not long after that moment, all the shocks end.
It’s particularly unfortunate, because once it loses the horror, the movie can’t quite figure out how to combine the power of an expert performance with a muddled and confusing tale about grief, what we leave behind, and depression.
That expert performance comes from Rebecca Hall, who stars as Beth, a wise, no-nonsense schoolteacher, who lives with her architect husband, Owen in a beautiful home that he built on a lake somewhere in upstate New York. But Beth has always looked over her shoulder; she’s used to a certain darkness following her in life. After a terrifying incident, Beth tells best...

Some times a film comes along that you expect very little from but ends up being so much more than you expected and Drunk Bus is exactly that. it must have something to it based on its synopsis alone because I get a choice of many films to review each week and for whatever reason Drunk Bus just stuck out to me. I’m glad I chose to watch it.
The film follows Michael a young campus bus driver who drives the late night ‘drunk bus’ every night. When he gets security for his bus in the form of a huge Samoan guy named Pineapple they form an unlikely kinship and both start trying to enjoy life.

"What you need is a do-over - grab those '40s and let's dip!" FilmRise Releasing has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled Drunk Bus, starring Charlie Tahan. This originally premiered at the San Diego Film Festival last year, and just stopped by the Cinequest Film Festival this month. A directionless, young campus bus driver and a punk rock, Samoan security guard named Pineapple form an unlikely kinship as they navigate the unpredictable late shift shit show known as the "drunk bus." Together, they break out of their endless loop of small town life and into a world of uncertainty, excitement and incredibly poor decision-making. This co-stars Tahan and Pineapple Tangaroa, Kara Hayward, Zach Cherry, Sarah Mezzanotte, Dave Hill, Tonatiuh Elizarraraz, and Will Forte. Inspired by one of the director's real experiences as a campus bus driver, and the actual security guard that worked with him, who...

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Given the bleak state of the world at the moment, you’d think that horror – a genre which typically destroys rather than reinforces our faith in humanity – is the last thing that people are wanting to see. Rest assured, however, that there is no limit to the sadomasochistic ways of the human heart. For better or worse, then, here are a few expertly-crafted yet little-known scary pictures that you can find on Netflix.
First off, we have a 2018 film called Calibre. Frequently recommended by acclaimed thriller writer Stephen King, this Scottish feature follows two friends whose weekend hunting trip is turned into a nail-biting, paranoia-inducing experience following a horrific accident. Sorry to keep the synopsis vague like that, but the plot is really better experienced without spoilers.

If you've listened to Corpse Club or read Daily Dead over the years, you may know that I'm not shy about sharing my eternal love for the 2008 zombified horror comedy Dance of the Dead, directed by Gregg Bishop from a screenplay by Joe Ballarini (I even had the undying pleasure of helping put together 10th anniversary screenings for the film). A knack for creepy atmospherics and individual scares goes a long way in the horror genre, and it takes “The Night House” pretty far. Though this tale of a new widow’s apparent haunting gets progressively lost in a narrative maze that’s complicated without being particularly rewarding, .
Rebecca Hall plays Beth, an upstate New York schoolteacher reeling from her husband of 14 years taking his life just a few days before we meet her. Completely blindsided by that event — particularly since as far as she knew, she was the only party in their marriage who suffered from depression — her immediate reaction is one of anger. Friends (notably Sarah Goldberg as colleague Claire) and neighbors (Vondie Curtis Hall’s Mel) offer support, but Beth fends them off, preferring to process bitter grief alone, with a drink or 10.
Yet while she may feel abandoned, she doesn’t actually feel alone, as disturbances...
