Social media users recently marveled that last month marked 20 years since three modern Christmas favorites — New Line’s Elf, Universal’s Love Actually and Miramax’s Bad Santa — all hit theaters within weeks of each other. Two decades later, you don’t need to feel like a cotton-headed ninny-muggins if you’re among those wondering why studios don’t release holiday theatrical offerings in the way they once did.
Although most Christmas films don’t tend to follow the path of, say, 1990’s Home Alone, which topped the domestic box office for a whopping 12 straight weeks, they had typically been a staple of the release calendar, with a handful of titles hitting theaters annually, as recently as the late 2010s. That list includes such 2016 theatrical offerings as Almost Christmas, Bad Santa 2, Office Christmas Party and Why Him?, followed by 2017’s Daddy’s Home 2, A Bad Moms Christmas and animated...

Anna Kendrick has been making waves in Hollywood since her film debut in 2003's "Camp." Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, Kendrick gained traction as an actor, appearing in four of the five Twilight movies, as well as "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," "Up in the Air," and "50/50" all by 2011. Arguably, she exploded into the spotlight following her role as Beca Mitchell in the 2013 musical comedy "Pitch Perfect," in which she starred alongside Rebel Wilson, Adam DeVine, and Brittany Snow.
Since the success from "Pitch Perfect," Kendrick has continued to take on lead roles in animated films like "Trolls" and heartwarming holiday movies like Disney+'s "Noelle." Most recently, the actor diverted from her musical/comedic roots and starred in the indie psychological thriller "Alice, Darling."
Outside of her prolific acting career, Kendrick typically keeps her personal life private. However, Kendrick garnered attention after she was rumored to...

Anna Kendrick’s “Alice, Darling,” directed by Mary Nighy, has released its first trailer.
Nighy, the daughter of “Living” star Bill Nighy, brought her directorial debut to Toronto Film Festival back in September for its world premiere. The psychological thriller also stars Kaniehtiio Horn, Charlie Carrick and Wunmi Mosaku.
Nominated for an Academy Award for “Up in the Air” (2009), Kendrick stars in “Alice, Darling” as a woman pushed to the breaking point by her psychologically abusive boyfriend, Simon. While on vacation with two close girlfriends, Alice rediscovers her essence and gains some much-needed perspective. Slowly, she starts to fray the cords of codependency that bind her. But Simon’s vengeance is as inevitable as it is shattering — and, once unleashed, it tests Alice’s strength, courage, and the bonds of her deep-rooted friendships.

Universal has set “Bros,” a romantic comedy starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, for release on August 12, 2022.
Universal is touting Eichner’s “Bros” as the first openly gay man to star and co-write his own major studio film. And “Bros” is certainly the rare major studio romantic comedy that will feature two gay leads as they each try to maybe, possibly, probably stumble towards love…that is, if they can find the time. They’re both very busy.
Nicholas Stoller is directing “Bros,” and Stoller also co-wrote the screenplay with Eichner. The film is described as a smart, swoony and heartfelt comedy about finding sex, love and romance amidst the madness.
“Bros” is produced by Judd Apatow, Stoller and Joshua Church, and Billy Eichner also serves as an executive producer on the film.

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to alter people’s holiday celebrations, many people are finding that watching holiday films is one tradition that can continue. While there has been no meaningful change in the percentage of speaking characters with disabilities in these top-grossing films in the past five years with just 2.3 percent of the 4,451 characters analyzed in the 100 top-grossing films of 2019 by the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism having a disability, several holiday films are bucking this trend. A chorus of Happy Birthday, please, for one Michael Theodore “Mickey” Mouse, who reaches the grand old age of 92 this month. As befits his advanced years, Mickey will likely be celebrating with a swig or two of Pepto Bismol and the Band of Brothers DVD boxset. Or, if he fancies, he could always fire up Disney + UK and catch some new episodes of The Mandalorian (starting Friday the 30th of October) The Simpsons, and Agents of Shield, all of which will be on the streaming service in November.
(Though now I think about it, Mickey Mouse lives in America, doesn’t he? So he’ll already have seen most of that. And Noelle, the new Anna Kendrick Christmas film that came out in the US last year. Some people have it all.)
Here’s what’s new on Disney Plus UK this November:
6 November
The Simpsons season 31
13 November
Marvel’s Agents of S.

A new month means a load of new original content coming to Disney Plus. As much as their rich vault of classic titles is a huge draw, the Mouse House has made the year-old streaming service nearly essential for consumers with their regular delivery of original movies and TV series dropping weekly. And in November, there’s much to get excited for, including multiple episodes of many new shows, as well as a few fresh films.
First of all, obviously the most notable title on this list is The Mandalorian, which airs new installments every Friday of November after kicking off its second season on October 30th. Fans of that galaxy far, far away will also not want to miss the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, which lands on Tuesday, November 17th, an unlikely mash-up sequel to both The Rise of Skywalker and 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special.

The pitch for Quibi is that you can “watch movie-quality shows designed for your phone.” The app allows users to switch seamlessly between the traditional landscape orientation and a mobile-friendly portrait view. This is revolutionary technology, but most of their available comedies and dramas could be mistaken for having been retrofitted for the gimmick. “Dummy” starring and executive produced by Anna Kendick stands out in this way. Instead of cropping the sides and re-centering the widescreen image like in other shows, director Tricia Brock and cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt properly push the medium forward.
SEEour take on the Best Short Form Comedy/Drama Series race.
The portrait version of “Dummy” compensates for its comparative skinniness with a taller image. The picture extends above and below what the horizontal version depicts (even rotated slightly above), allowing new space to convey information and also allowing more of the horizontal version to appear.

Artemis Fowl, Disney’s big budget fantasy movie based on a popular young adult series of books, is an unmitigated disaster. It’s also the lowest-rated film to premiere on Disney Plus.
Ahead of its official release on Friday, critics were able to screen it and let’s just say it’s earning its straight-to-video badge. The problem is though that unlike most movies which skip theaters, Artemis Fowl reportedly cost $125 million to make and had a prime summer release date. But Covid-19 nixed that plan.
Of the films that have premiered on the streaming platform, the critical rating based off of Rotten Tomatoes for Artemis Fowl is by far the lowest. The five movies to premiere before it were Lady and the Tramp, Noelle, Togo, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made and Stargirl. Togo and Timmy Failure received glowing reviews with 91% and 88%, respectively, and of the three remaining, only the...

As the streaming wars have been consumed this spring by the launches of HBO Max and Quibi — with Peacock still to come — another new entrant, Apple TV Plus, recently found reason to celebrate on the awards front.
The Daytime Emmy nominations were finally announced last month by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences after a monthlong delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and Apple TV Plus scored an impressive haul for a first-timer. Even though the service has been streaming for only six months, its four kids shows landed a total of 17 nods — placing it ahead of networks like HBO (with 14) in total daytime noms.
Stack that up against established streaming competitors, and Apple has quickly become a contender: Among other streamers in the kids categories, Netflix scored 29 noms from 17 shows, while Amazon picked up 20 noms across 10 shows.
Now comes the Primetime Emmy race, which is administered by NATAS’ L.

HBO has dominated the Emmy race for years. Now, sibling streamer HBO Max is looking to get into the game.
HBO Max launches on May 27 — just four days before the Television Academy’s May 31 cutoff for Emmy eligibility. But that’s still enough time for the streaming service to enter the awards race this year with two shows: Competition series “Legendary” and half-hour anthology series “Love Life.”
Variety has confirmed that those two shows will be the first to be submitted by HBO Max for Emmy consideration. The streamer plans to create an awards campaign for both.
“Love Life” will bring Anna Kendrick into the Emmy conversation, as the Oscar nominee stars in the anthology series’ first season, along with Zoë Chao, Peter Vack and Sasha Compère. The half-hour anthology “follows a different protagonist’s quest for love each season, with each half-hour episode telling the story of one of their relationships,...

“Late Night With Seth Meyers” writer Jenny Hagel has a few suggestions for Hallmark Channel.
In light of the network’s recent debacle regarding a set of commercials featuring lesbians kissing that were aired, pulled, and then re-aired, Hagel said on Tuesday night that she’s “glad to hear that Hallmark is back on board with having lesbians in commercials. But why stop there?”
Her big idea for Hallmark? Start making holiday movies with lesbian leads!

Here are some of her best pitches:
“The First Noelle” logline: Sarah has dated three women named Noelle, but sparks fly when she goes to a friend’s Christmas party and runs into the first Noelle.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” logline: Two lesbians are making Christmas dinner when they realize they’re out of quinoa.

What do you get when you toss together Christmas cheer, Christmas kitsch, a fish-out-of-the-North-Pole setup swiped from “Elf,” and a plot that turns on whether Kris Kringle’s daughter, played as a perky naïf by Anna Kendrick, has what it takes to step into her dad’s snow boots? You get a plastic icicle like “Noelle,”
Long ago, it was called straight-to-tape. Then it was called straight-to-vod, and now it’s straight to your monthly subscription service. But if the delivery system has changed, the content remains very much the same. When you see a movie like “Noelle,” what the experience comes down to is: It’s something you’re not watching in a theater because most of us wouldn’t watch it in a theater. It wouldn’t be worth the effort. Whatever your idea of a sentimental connect-the-dots Christmas comedy is, this is sub that. At home, however,...

Marc Lawrence’s holiday-themed Santa Claus-centric family comedy “Noelle” was originally conceived of as a theatrical release for Disney — when it was known as “Nicole” — before changing course and debuting on the Mouse House’s fledgling streaming platform. Presumably, the theatrical version of “Noelle” would have boasted better CGI, a beefier storyline, and at least a handful more laughs, because the version hitting Disney+ on its very first day in existence is not at all up to theatrical snuff. Fundamentally good-hearted and with a charming Anna Kendrick on board as the eponymous character, “Noelle” may have a sweet holiday movie buried somewhere in its DNA, but the final version meant to tout the depth of the studio’s library is certainly not it.
Whatever missteps may have gone into “Noelle” — and there are many — at least Lawrence made off with a solid cast: Kendrick as Santa’s cheery daughter Noelle,...

It seemed like any other movie premiere.
Journalists and photographers swarmed the red carpet as stars Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux smiled gamely for pictures and struck a pose, just as they would for any other Hollywood screening. Except there was one key difference. The film they were in New York City to promote last week, a live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp,” is helping to usher in a new frontier of moviemaking. Instead of bowing in theaters, it will debut on streaming platform Disney Plus.
“The pressure to perform and deliver a great movie was the same,” says producer Brigham Taylor. “We just set out to tell the best story we could. We’re just trying to connect with people, and ultimately Disney Plus could allow us to find a broader, bigger audience than we could even have found in a theater.”
