To make the plot more relatable to Chilean culture, understand that willingness to live together and explain an already close relationship between the four senior ladies, producer and adaptor Luz Croxatto turned the protagonists into three cousins and the mother of one of them - who in turn became the aunt of the other two, who lived in different regions of Chile. Their new backstory allowed the series to integrate stories of the women growing together and even flashbacks of them as teenagers.
To better align the story with the original Miami setting, the series is set at the seaside resort of Viña del Mar, 70 miles west of the capital Santiago. The city is known for its casino and racetrack, which allowed to incorporate the gambling storylines.
In the original series, Dorothy's mother Sophia Petrillo has a humbler background as an Italian immigrant in New York who married a Polish American . While in this adaptation her counterpart is also blunt, direct and brazen in her remarks as the result of a stroke, she comes from a family of better economic means.
In this version of the series Chichi is a close friend of the mayor of the city of Viña del Mar, who at the time of filming was Virginia Reginatto. Mayor Reginatto does a cameo in the pilot episode.
