- Bucket's detective skills are questioned when another body is discovered and another Inspector arrives. Hawdon puts in for a promotion but discovers something about Frances which leaves Honoria shocked.
- Amelia pays Arthur his share of the brewery but he is ungracious, coming close to exposing Compeyson - whom Jaggers wants to investigate. Hawdon visits Honoria in secret - before accusing Frances of sabotaging his promotion chances. After he has gone Honoria finds out another of Frances's deceptions, inducing early labour. On discovery of another corpse Inspector Bucket is relieved of the Marley case by overweight, overbearing Inspector Thompson, whose findings release Fagin as he arrests a man Bucket believes to be innocent, spurring him on to doing some private sleuthing.—don @ minifie-1
- Captain James sneaks in to be with Honoria while Frances is out, later confronts Frances about interfering with his possible promotion and asks Honoria to leave with him; Frances claims she protecting her sister, who begs James' patience. Amelia buys Arthur's shares for £10,000, twice the value. Jaggers tells his clerk to investigate Compeyson. Arthur threatens to tell Amelia of Compeyson's wife, but he retorts that he would tell her of Arthur's secret to be gay. Blunt inspector Thompson steps in to take smart, fair Bucket off the case and has a man beaten into falsely confessing to Marley's murder; Bucket releases smug Fagin. Amelia, aghast, espies Compeyson kissing a woman (his wife) on the cheek. Mrs Bumble flirtatiously convinces Gradgrind to overlook her husband's stumbling interview. Sikes completes his purchase of Nancy with the money he stole from Fagin and takes her away. Bucket tells Venus that he will continue his investigation on the sly. Honoria is appalled to find Frances's letter to Sir Leicester written in her name and packs to leave, but suddenly feels what may be labor pains.—KGF Vissers
