Futurama is one of the best animated series of all time.
And you know what?
No matter how terrible this season or future seasons may be, nothing changes that.
(Hulu Trailer/Screenshot)
When the show debuted in 1999, its lobster claw was on the pulse of wisecracking liberal escapism. The natural evolution of The Simpsons, Futurama represented the best of Gen X and millennial humor.
It surpassed The Simpsons in many ways because it could delve deeper into surrealism and even apocalyptic (but funny) scenarios. There was no “net” of a nuclear family to fall back on.
This was the world, the unbridled imagination of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, and the possibilities were endless.

The last time Trekkies saw Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) in live-action was via a video call to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) in 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis." In animation, however, we've been spoiled with the volume of Janeway in recent years. In "Star Trek: Prodigy," a holographic version of Janeway, also played by Mulgrew, served as an ersatz mother figure for the show's teenage protagonists. The real-world Janeway also eventually became involved in the action, and she too was impressed with Dal (Brett Grey), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and the rest of the Protostar teens, to the point where she helps them apply to Starfleet Academy. In the show's second and final season, Janeway even lead a quest to rescue her old first officer, Captain Chakotay (Robert Beltran), and brought the "Prodigy" kids along.
While there are currently no plans to bring Janeway back to "Star Trek" after the end of "Prodigy,...

Slipknot’s Sid Wilson is recovering at home after being hospitalized for “serious” burns sustained during a bonfire accident.
In a series of Instagram Live videos posted to his social media account yesterday, the DJ and keyboard musician assured fans he was going to be “all right” as he updated viewers on his journey.
“I had an explosion in my face,” he said in the first five-minute clip. “I’m Ok, I’m gonna be Ok, but I did have some serious burns to my face and my arms.” In the self-facing video, he shows close-up shots of his “singed” eyebrows, “blistered” mouth and arms, which he said received the brunt of the flames. “Ouch,” he captioned the video simply.
In a statement posted to the heavy metal band’s page, Slipknot wrote, “Our brother Sid Wilson was in an accident today and sustained burns across his body. He’s...

“’Fargo’ is quite different than any show I’ve ever worked on,” admits music supervisor Maggie Phillips. In our recent webchat she continues, “The music of the show, the soundtrack and the songs, get to be a character of its own. On some shows, I wouldn’t want to be bold and call attention to the songs. In ‘Fargo’ you want people to notice and be thought provoking.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Each season takes a darkly comedic look at new characters dealing with life and crime in the Midwest. The series’ fifth instalment tells the story of Dot, played by Juno Temple, whose normal life is disrupted when her abusive ex-husband, Sheriff Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm), discovers her whereabouts. “Star Trek: Prodigy” dropped its second season on Netflix on July 1, and series star Kate Mulgrew is holding out hope the animated series will be renewed for Season 3.
Fresh off her appearance at the “Prodigy” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Mulgrew said the energy in the panel’s ballroom was “electric.”
“I had a full auditorium on Sunday morning for the panel,” she said. “They were thrilled. They were delighted! They’re desperate for this kind of television. I don’t think there’s anything quite like it on television now, because it’s teaching ‘Star Trek’ to a new generation to young children in an entirely novel way.”

The trailer for season five of Star Trek: Lower Decks goes hard into celebrating the series’ final episodes. It even recreates a trailer for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the last adventure of The Original Series crew.
But even as it acknowledges that studio Paramount has chosen to cancel the show after season five, the trailer also insists that the USS Cerritos will continue to boldly go where more respected Starfleet vessels went first. As Mariner says in the trailer, “We haven’t even cracked our second quadrant!”
More than just a standard knowing joke, Mariner’s observation reveals the actual hopes of Lower Decks creator Mike McMahan. In fact, McMahan said as much during the Lower Decks panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
According to SFX Magazine, McMahan told attendees that the fifth season wouldn’t offer closure for Mariner, Boimler, and the other members of the Cerritos crew.

A new series in development is going where no Star Trek show has gone before – into live-action comedy. The project for Paramount+ was announced during the Star Trek Universe panel at Comic-Con by moderator Justin Simien and Tawny Newsome, voice actor from Star Trek: Lower Decks.
The two are co-writing the half-hour comedy with the steward of the Star Trek franchise, Alex Kurtzman, who will be making his half-hour writing debut.
No title or format (single-camera of multi-camera) have been revealed for the comedy, in which Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
Additional clues provided by Simien and Newsome include that the comedy will feature some 25th century shenanigans, odd couple pairings, and…vibes?
Kurtzman, Simien and Newsome executive produce alongside Aaron Baiers, Kyle Laursen, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth. The project comes from the studio behind the Star Trek universe,...

This post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy.
With the exception of Miles O’Brien, Wesley Crusher may have suffered more than any other Star Trek character. Not so much on screen, though few of us would be able to recover from a sharp “Shut up” from Captain Picard. Rather, Crusher has suffered off-screen, at the hands of viewers who hated having a precocious kid on the Enterprise during The Next Generation era and started groups devoted to imagining the character’s death.
Although Wesley has cameoed in the years after he left Tng with the Traveler, including in Picard and Lower Decks, it was still something of a surprise when Wesley returned in the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy in a more involved role. It was an even bigger surprise that fans welcomed him back with such elation, something that came as a real joy to Wesley performer, Wil Wheaton.

When it was announced in 2019 that Nickelodeon would be getting its own animated “Star Trek” series, I must admit I was skeptical.
After all, “Star Trek: Discovery” was already airing its second season (which clearly set up the phenomenal spinoff “Strange New Worlds), and “Picard” had already been announced, as had the adult animated series “Lower Decks.” How could a show clearly intended for kids measure up against all of that?
Fast forward to the debut of “Star Trek: Prodigy” in October 2021 — and I have never been so happy to be so wrong.
This show, about a group of young misfits who stumble across a Starfleet ship and use it to escape their captivity on a desolate prison colony, embodied absolutely everything that I love about “Star Trek.”
From the outset, it shared messages about teamwork, not judging others by their appearances, the longing for a home, and, of course,...

This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers.
Even though it got seven full seasons, Star Trek: Voyager still has a reputation as lesser Trek. However, in the decades since Captain Janeway brought her crew back home from the Delta Quadrant in 2001, Voyager has become a fan-favorite. So beloved is Voyager that Trekkies have thrilled to see the return of some of the cast, including Seven of Nine and Tuvok on Picard.
More than Picard or Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy has functioned as a Voyager sequel series. The story begins with a bunch of kids in the Delta Quadrant finding a ship once captained by Chakotay; Janeway (as both an Admiral and a hologram) plays a major role in the series; and the Doctor joined the main crew in the latest season.
Yet, despite all of these connections, Prodigy creators Kevin and Dan Hageman don’t want to limit themselves to just Voyager.

“So, you have questions about time travel?” asks Starfleet science officer Dr. Erin MacDonald in the fourth episode of Star Trek: Prodigy‘s second season. “You’ve come to the right place.”
Without question, time travel has long been a major part of the Star Trek. franchise. Kirk, Picard, and everyone else have bounced back and forward in time, whether to save the whales, hang out with Sarah Silverman, escape an evil AI, or save a young Khan.
But while these stories generally turn out to be a lot of fun, they’re not always clear. Like most big science fiction franchise, Trek often fudges the specifics of its time travel adventures, putting cool story ahead of scientific precision.
Fortunately, when Prodigy used real-life astrophysicist and aerospace engineer Erin Macdonald in an instructional video, it laid down Trek‘s time travel rules in detail, for the first time.

"Star Trek: Prodigy" was initially billed as a Trek series for younger audiences. It was released not by Paramount, but by Nickelodeon, and the main characters were all teenagers, learning about the existence of Starfleet for the first time. A hologram of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) was there to usher the teens toward a life of decency and heroism, and also to assure Trekkies that this show did connect to extant Trek lore at large.
That said, the plot of the show's first season was somewhat complicated, and made use of unusual time travel conceits that a younger audience might have trouble wrapping their heads around.
The plot centered on the mystery of a lost and abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. The ship was found by Dal R'El (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), and a few other teens who were escaping slavery. They fled in the Protostar,...

This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers.
For decades, Chakotay represented one of Star Trek‘s greatest failures. Chakotay was introduced in Star Trek: Voyager as the franchise’s first Native lead character, a course correction from Trek‘s embarrassing depictions of Native culture in the past (see “The Paradise Syndrome” from The Original Series and “Journey’s End” from The Next Generation).
Whatever producers’ intentions, Chakotay made matters worse. Not only did they fail to cast a Native actor in the part (Robert Beltran is Mexican American) but they hired a scam artist who called himself Jamake Highwater as consultant on the character, despite the fact that he had already been exposed as a Jewish man who pretended to be Native.
Making matters worse, producers lost interest in Chakotay after the third season of Voyager, giving him less to do, much to Beltran’s frustration. Hoping to get released from the show,...

The second and final season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" was released on Netflix on July 1, 2024, to almost no fanfare (as is the wont of Netflix). All 20 episodes of the season are now available, and Trekkies will be happy to know that the series connects to extant "Star Trek" lore in new and exciting ways.
For one, the series begins on board the U.S.S. Voyager-a, the improved, larger version of the central ship in "Star Trek: Voyager." Admiral Janeway is also still in command, serving on a ship populated mostly by students and cadets, all using the craft as a scientific research vessel. The idea of a high-powered school in space is an intriguing concept and could serve as the premise for a "Star Trek" spinoff in an of itself.
Also on board the Voyager-a is the Doctor (Robert Picardo), the emergency medical hologram initially activated in the first episode of "Voyager.

The first season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" was tantalizing for fans of "Star Trek: Voyager." The central cast of teen characters -- led by the plucky and overconfident Dal R'El (Brett Gray) -- discovered a lost and abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar, a ship that was equipped with a holographic version of the Voyager's Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew). It would be up to Janeway and the teens to return the Protostar to Federation space.
"Prodigy" marked Mulgrew's first return to canonical "Star Trek" in 19 years, her last appearance being a cameo in 2002's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Later in "Prodigy," Mulgrew would also appear as the real-life Admiral Janeway, letting the actress pull double duty.
Hologram Janeway was quite a bit different from the flesh-and-blood version, however. The artificial Janeway was a gentle, teacher-like figure who came to embrace the younger characters in a near-matronly way. Admiral Janeway was bitter and curmudgeonly,...

In a surprising turn of events for Star Trek fans, the animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy” has found a new home on Netflix following its cancellation by Paramount+. This move marks a significant shift in the streaming landscape for the beloved sci-fi franchise.
The global streaming giant Netflix has acquired the rights to “Star Trek: Prodigy” for the United States and most international territories, as part of a deal with CBS Studios. This acquisition comes after Paramount+’s decision in June to remove several original series, including “Prodigy,” from its platform as part of a cost-cutting measure.
“Star Trek: Prodigy” follows a group of young aliens who must learn to work together while navigating the galaxy in a commandeered starship. The series, which targets a younger audience, represents a departure from the typical Star Trek demographic and was initially developed for Nickelodeon before moving to Paramount+.

Star Trek is an ever-growing franchise, with 11 television series, plus two series of shorts and two separate film series. But despite all these spinoffs and spinoffs of spinoffs, only a couple of branches of the franchise have been given sequels. The Original Series has The Animated Series as a continuation, then its run of six sequel movies, plus a prequel series (Strange New Worlds); and The Next Generation has four films and a sequel series (Picard), plus a spiritual sequel in Lower Decks. But Deep Space Nine has had to make do with a single episode of Lower Decks and Enterprise gets nothing but the occasional mention as easter eggs.
Voyager, however, has been more fortunate. The inclusion of Seven of Nine as a main character in Picard has already given at least one Voyager character the full sequel treatment, but some fans might not realize that there is another...

After almost getting canceled and being saved by the audience’s efforts, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is finally going to see the light of the day. The animated series, which premiered in 2021 on Paramount+, has found a new home for its second season.
Star Trek: Prodigy, which marks the tenth series in the Star Trek Universe, follows a group of ragtag aliens who find an abandoned Starfleet ship and take control of it. In Season 2, the members of the team head out into space to look for the ship’s original owners.

The highly anticipated second season of “Star Trek: Prodigy” is poised to make a splash on Netflix, with all 20 episodes set to premiere on Monday, July 1st. This release marks a new chapter for the animated series, which found a new home on Netflix after being canceled by Paramount+ last year.
Kate Mulgrew, who voices Admiral Kathryn Janeway and Hologram Janeway, has taken to social media to rally fan support. In an Instagram post, Mulgrew urged viewers to “watch, stream, and post on social media” about the show, emphasizing that fan engagement could lead to additional seasons. “With your continued support, it is my hope that we will have more seasons to tell these stories,” Mulgrew stated.
The upcoming season promises significant developments for Admiral Janeway’s character. A central plotline involves her mission to rescue Captain Chakotay, voiced by Robert Beltran, from a dark alternate timeline 52 years in the future.

Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, has manifested itself into one of the biggest and most successful franchises in Hollywood. After multiple decades, we have numerous comics, movies, and TV shows that fans gush over regularly. While the initial movies and TV shows have a much more hardcore fanbase, recent projects have also managed to hold their own.

Updated, 1:30 Pm: CBS Studios has released the official trailer and key art for the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy. In the trailer we see the returns of Vau N’Akat villain Asencia (Jameela Jamil) and Starfleet Officer Commander Tysess (Daveed Diggs) to the cast. Season 2 also involves a classified mission and a whole lot of time-paradox weirdness: “This is one heck of a ride!”
You can watch the trailer above and see details of the series and key art below.
Previous, June 17: Netflix has set July 1 for the release of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2, per the streamer’s app.
Netflix picked up the series last October after Paramount+ decided in June to remove a number of originals, including Star Trek: Prodigy, from the platform in a cost-cutting content write-down and not to proceed with the previously commissioned 20-episode season of the animated show which was already in the works.

Demon Slayer season 4 has offered a lot of chances to witness growth in the series. This growth can be seen through characters who play roles both major and minor. The focus on Tanjiro’s character isn’t the only place where fans get to witness the depth in which many whose names also became forgettable after a point.

While it is not to say that the character in itself was forgettable, the fact that their role was too small to acknowledge. However, the series, especially Ufotable, has taken it upon themselves to take these minute panels and turn them into so much more. After Tengen Uzui, the latest example of this is through Muichiro Tokito’s character.

Star Trek: Discovery just ended after five seasons on the air. The Paramount+ spinoff series concluded the story seeing the Discovery captain, Michael Burham (Sonequa Martin-Green), trying to find the Progenitors’ technology, which was used to create humanoid life. Meanwhile, her crew set out to find and rescue her.
Here is how Star Trek: Discovery ended and what is next for the franchise.
How Did Star Trek: Discovery End?
Star Trek: Discovery’s series finale started where the penultimate episode ended. Captain Michael Burham disappeared through a portal and woke up somewhere with infinite gateways that led to exotic worlds. While there, she saw Moll (Eve Harlow). The two fought and then decided to work together.

I love Star Trek. It’s one of the most unique fandoms since it features multiple different properties in the same universe. Don’t get me wrong, I love Star Wars, but something about Star Trek that raises it to another level. There are so many shows that are unique in their own way. You have Star Trek T.O.S, Star Trek The Animated Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Picard.
The point is that there is something for everyone. Fans are a little bit less toxic than other fandoms. My theory is that because there are so many shows there is at least one show that everyone can agree is good. So if someone were to, let’s say, hate Prodigy,...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Although Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is focused on a season-long quest for ancient secrets from before the dawn of history, there have also been a few episodes that have been almost standalone in structure. From the time loop in “Face the Strange” to the return of the Iss Enterprise in “Mirrors,” Discovery’s final seasons has episodic stories, woven into the bigger arc. And, out of all of season 5, episode 6, “Whistlespeak,” is probably the most standalone of the bunch.
In order to retrieve the latest clue to the Progenitor tech, the USS Discovery jumps to the planet Halem’no, a pre-warp planet. Here, Burnham and Tilly have to go undercover to not only find the clue, but also, repair some concealed technology. Along the way, Discovery pays homage to The Original Series, the prequel series Enterprise, and beyond. Here are the biggest Star Trek...

Way back in 2002, the excitement for Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones diminished somewhat. Late Night with Conan O’Brien sent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to mock the fans lined up for the premiere, resulting in a segment in which comedian/puppeteer Robert Smigel launched nerd jokes at the assembly.
Most of the jokes were pretty obvious, including the last bit, in which a man cosplaying as Mr. Spock gained the knack for cursing and walked up and down the line with his middle finger extended. But while the perceived Star Wars vs. Star Trek rivalry has become an old toxic cliché at this point, the fact is that the two franchises don’t actually overlap very much in terms of their core missions. Trek favors optimistic philosophical inquiry and Wars emphasizes fantasy and adventure.

The second season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" is still awaiting a release date in North America, although French readers should be able to view it right now on the region-specific France.TV. The story of the cancelation of "Prodigy" is sad for Trekkies, as the kid-centric animated series, created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, was just growing into its own and emerging as a proper "Star Trek" series.
The premise was fun: in an unknown and distant part of the galaxy, a group of teenage aliens -- fleeing slavery in a mine -- discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. On board, they meet a holographic version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who assumes the teens are Starfleet cadets and require tutelage. The teens are hotheaded, feisty, and brooding in the way that teens tend to be, but Janeway teaches them to operate as a crew and mature as individuals.

As much as we love them, the Star Trek movies have their share of mistakes. God stealing a starship, John Harrison revealing himself as Khan, McCoy shaving off his beard in The Motion Picture. But it looks like the movie franchise is about to outdo them all.
Paramount has officially added the next Star Trek movie to its 2025 release schedule. According to TrekCore, the project currently called Untitled Star Trek Origin Story will begin production this year, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing and Toby Haynes directing. The film will take place decades before the 2009 Star Trek reboot from J.J. Abrams.
And it’s a terrible idea.
First of all, there’s the question of the timeline logistics of the film. Although one would assume that the film will occur in the Kelvin Timeline, the alternate universe in which Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond take place, the...

Since its debut 1966, Star Trek has been about boldly going forward. And no Star Trek series has gone further forward than Discovery. After a rocky first few seasons set about a decade before The Original Series, Discovery found its place by jumping to the 32nd century, farther into the future than any other entry in the franchise.
As Discovery prepares to end its mission with its fifth and final season, fans might be wondering what’s next for the 32nd century and the TV franchise as a whole. With Strange New Worlds staying in Disco’s original pre-tos era and Lower Decks and Prodigy exploring the period after the Next Generation movie Nemesis, Disco’s exit seems to leave the 32nd century unexplored.
But not so fast, says Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “I think you can expect more of [Discovery’s] 32nd century,” Kurtzman teases in an exclusive interview for...

Since 2017, "Star Trek" has gone through some dramatic ups and downs. The launch of "Star Trek: Discovery" that year was a clarion call for the franchise, announcing that "Star Trek" was back on TV after a 13-year hiatus. "Discovery," however, was notoriously expensive and not widely beloved. It was soon joined on CBS All Access/Paramount+ by an overwhelming glut of "Star Trek" shows, each one set at a different period in Trek history. There was a brief moment when six Trek shows were running simultaneously.
The streaming model, however, proved to be unprofitable, and Paramount has been slowly extracting all its eggs from the Trek basket in recent years. "Discovery" is about to debut its fifth and final season, "Prodigy" will likewise end after its next year, "Short Treks" is seemingly no more, and "Picard" recently drew to a close. A planned spinoff of "Discovery," called "Section 31" mutated from...

“I can’t believe I get to play the captain of the Enterprise.”
Anson Mount is sitting across from me on one of the Toronto soundstages for the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which is set in the years when his character, Capt. We’re speaking on the sleek Enterprise bridge, and Mount is recounting the out-of-body experience he had the first time he sat in the iconic captain’s chair. “I had this immediate flashback to playing ‘Star Trek’ as a kid,” he says. “I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t at some point stop and think to myself, ‘I’m on fucking “Star Trek.”’”

Three of the 12 "Star Trek" shows to date begin with the same familiar narration, which was originally spoken by Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in 1966:
"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise, its five-year mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."
For "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987) and "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" (2022), "no man" was changed to "no one." "Next Generation" was also a "continuing mission" and not a "five-year mission." That narration has come to represent the ethos of the entire "Star Trek" franchise, highlighting that the various shows and movies are about exploration, new life, and going boldly. Unlike the title crawl of "Star Wars," there is no talk of conflict, conquering enemies, or asserting dominance. In the original series, the narration played over a gentle...

Alex Kurtzman looks exactly how you’d expect someone to look at the end of a five-year-mission for Starfleet: relaxed, confident, and ready to bring the ship home. At least, that’s the impression he gives when he, showrunner Michelle Paradise, and stars Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala talk with Den of Geek about the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery during SXSW 2024. You almost can’t tell this show has faced many trials and tribulations across its seven years on the air.
“It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman declares during our chat, but quickly adds, “It was an incredibly bumpy first year.” Only a calm man can use words like “incredibly bumpy” to describe Discovery‘s inaugural season in 2017, the first new Star Trek television series since Enterprise went off the air in 2005. Femi used his incredible blend of explosiveness and strength to keep King off-balance for nearly the whole match, but it was King’s past that came back to haunt him. Mr. Stone walked down the ramp and yelled at King, causing the challenger to leave the ring and shove him, but that left him wide open for more clubbing blows and ultimately a pop-up powerbomb.

At the very end of the first season of "Star Trek: Picard," after the story had concluded and everyone was headed back home, the violent bounty hunter Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) and Admiral Picard's close friend Raffi (Michelle Hurd) sat idly conversing. They reached out and began romantically holding hands, implying that the characters were initiating a romance. Previously throughout "Star Trek," both Seven and Raffi had only been seen having romances with men, so their respective bisexuality came as a pleasant surprise.
Sadly, at the start of the second season of "Picard," enough time had passed that Seven and Raffi had already dated for a while ... and had broken up. There was now a great deal of romantic resentment between them, and they had to struggle to fulfill their mission in the 21st century (the second season featured a time travel plot). Jack, with his father (Patrick Stewart) and mother (Gates McFadden), took a good long gander at his new assignment, the Titan-a, newly rechristened the Enterprise-g. This new ship was to be captained by Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), formerly the first officer on board the Titan-a, and the vessel was poised to go on its first deep-space mission with its new name.
Also on board were Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Seven's ex-girlfriend and also her first officer, as well as former Titan crewmembers Lieutenant Matthew Arliss Mura (Joseph Lee), Ensign Kova Rin Esmar (Jin Maley), and presumably Dr. Ohk (Tiffany Shepis). In a post-credits stinger after the final "Picard" episode,...

Chicago – One of the sauciest new jobs that has arisen from the digital era is that of “Influencer.” Gathering followers, showing off new products and using your personality is the job description in this age of clicks. Writer/director Alex Haughey explores this phenomenon in his new film “Under the Influencer,” which is currently available for download and streaming.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Tori (Taylor Scorse) has been an influencer since shyly going online at age 15 to teach an eyeliner technique. Eventually her personality reaches a large audience, and she officially makes a living as an influencer. Ten years later, she’s still at it, but losing touch with the target audience. Her team gets more desperate, and her personal life starts to infiltrate the online persona, blurring lines in her life. What happens when someone is 25 years old and knows nothing about who she is?
The film is brilliantly balanced between the...

As seen in the photo above, filming has begun on "Star Trek: Section 31," a TV movie starring Michelle Yeoh as Empress Philippa Georgiou, the "evil" counterpart to the deceased Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh's character appeared in multiple episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery," and exited the series when she was recruited into Section 31, the "Star Trek" equivalent of the CIA. Section 31, outfitted with badass black badges, engaged in shady dealings on Starfleet's behalf, subverting the organization's ideals when violence was needed.
A "Section 31" TV series was rumored to be in production as early as 2017 when Trekkies noticed that the call numbers of the U.S.S. Discovery were Ncc-1031. An official Yeoh-starring series was announced in 2018 and several episodes were written. Eventually, though, the series was developed into a single televised movie event.

As Star Trek fans, we may quibble about certain aspects of the franchise. We all have our opinions about the best captain or the general ethos of the show. But we can all agree on one thing: Star Trek is about boldly going where no one has gone before. It’s right there at the start of the show!
And yet, for whatever reason, Trek producers seem obsessed with going backwards, excavating the years before the adventures of Kirk and Spock on The Original Series. First we got Star Trek: Enterprise in 2001, then the J.J. Abrams reboot in 2009, then Discovery in 2017, and again with the spin-off Strange New Worlds. In fact, until Discovery jumped ahead 900 years at the end of the second season, the franchise had not moved the timeline past 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.
Unfortunately, it seems like Paramount is ready to look to the past once again. The...

For a year in the the 2010s, filmmaker Alex Haughey worked for a social media influencer — a job he quickly tried to put behind him.
“It was not a good job, but it was an interesting character study of this life outside of reality,” says Haughey, who went on to direct the low-budget supernatural thriller Prodigy, which was released in 2018 and eventually made a bit of a splash when it later streamed on Netflix.
Haughey was looking for his next project after Prodigy, and found it with Under the Influencer. “If you saw Prodigy, you wouldn’t pick this out as my next project,” he notes with a laugh.
Inspiration struck when Haughey happened to watch the 1962 French feature Cleo from 5 to 7, which centers on a singer who, while she lived decades before social media, still reminded him of the influencer he once worked for.
“Everyone handles her and pampers her.

After being lost for so long, Star Trek: Prodigy has finally made it home, and it’s bringing along an old friend. After Prodigy‘s well-regarded first season, Paramount+, the streaming service that touted itself “the home of Star Trek,” removed the shelved the completed second season before it had a chance to air.
Fortunately, Prodigy will return on Netflix on Dec. 25, starting with all of season one, with season two slated to release in 2024. Even better, Robert Picardo has confirmed via Twitter that he will appear in the second season as the Emergency Medical Hologram, better known as the Doctor.
“Now that our strike has ended, I am pleased to confirm that I will be on season 2 of #StarTrekProdigy,” wrote Picardo.
