This watchable American animation draws on Japanese anime, but it’s best to ignore the muddled plot and let the striking imagery wash over you
This animated feature is written and directed by Philip Gelatt, who previously made live-action horror pics They Remain and The Bleeding House, and Morgan Galen King; it is an American-made production but one indebted to the style and scope of classic Japanese anime, what with its fusion of 18-certificate worthy violence, steampunk fantasy elements and new age spiritualism. That all makes for a heady, fizzy mix that’s very watchable, probably even more so for viewers open to the use of chemical assistance. Still, there are passages where the narrative throughline gets rather muddled and you can only wonder where those characters with mechanical wings and plague doctor masks suddenly came from (or did you just fall asleep for a minute and imagine them?) Grab your tissues—Adele's latest music is going to bring the tears. In a clip from the songstress' upcoming CBS special, One Night with Adele, the 33-year-old singer talks about the "brutally honest" track "Hold On," from her album 30. Oprah suggests that the singer had to be in the "dark dark dark hours," when making the track and the lyrics couldn't reflect it more. Oprah reads the lyric out loud: "I'm such a mess. The harder that I try I regress. I am my own worst enemy. Right now, I truly hate being me. Every day feels like the road that I'm on might open up and swallow me whole. How do I feel so mighty small when I'm struggling to feel at...

The Fighting Irish football faithful will have to pay up to watch Notre Dame’s home opener against Toledo next month. NBC, which has broadcast every Notre Dame home football game since 1991, will sit out the Sept. 11 matchup in favor of NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock.
The game will be available on Peacock’s premium tier, though NBC is going to give out a small discount ahead of time. This will be the only Notre Dame game that Peacock will have exclusively; the rest of the Fighting Irish’s home schedule, including the annual matchup against USC, will be available on both Peacock and NBC.
Former NFL quarterback Drew Brees will make his debut in the broadcast booth alongside Mike Tirico.

In the first trailer for “Cinderella,” the latest retelling of the classic fairytale, Camila Cabello’s princess isn’t searching for Prince Charming. No, the young woman, who glamorized the glass slipper, dreams of building her own fashion empire.
The upcoming movie, which debuts on Amazon Prime Video in September, gives a modern spin on the familiar story about an orphan forced to live with her evil stepmother and wicked stepsisters. In this version, the ambitious protagonist, who goes by Ella, is no damsel in distress. She desires to be a seamstress and one day launch her own dress line — naysayers be damned.
“Here’s a laugh, this girl fancies herself a businessman,” one particularly rude townsperson says to raucous laugher, even though Cinderella can clearly hear him.
When her cruel stepmom (Idina Menzel) bans her from going to the ball, thus ruining her chances of showing off her custom gowns,...

Forget Jay Gatsby, Forrest Gump, and Fievel Mouskewitz, no fictional character so thoroughly embodies the American dream as Jenna Maroney. Conceived on a toilet, born on a kerb, and raised in a swamp, Maroney flew to fame and fortune on a rocket built from desperation and a pathological need for attention (why should babies get all the fuss? They’re not the only ones who can fit both feet in their mouths).
Born Ystrepa Grokovitz to parents Verner and Werner, and brought up in Toilet Cove Swamp, Jenna was a natural performer from a young age, gracing many a Florida child pageant stage and at Christmas, regaling mall staff with carols to distract from her mother’s shoplifting. She boasts a seventh grade education and a diploma from the Royal Tampa Academy of Dramatic Tricks, at which she majored in game show pointing and theatre superstitions. It all changed for...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” won two awards to top all programs in the third annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, the Critics Choice Association and the nonfiction producers organization Npact announced on Monday.
For the third consecutive year, “RuPaul” was named the year’s best competition series, although for the first time it shared the prize with another series, “The Great British Baking Show.” The Critics Choice Association, which is made up of television, radio and internet critics and journalists, is known for a surprisingly large number of ties in its awards shows, and its 2021 winners included deadlocks in three key categories: “RuPaul” and “Gbbs” in Best Competition Series, “The Masked Singer” and “The Voice” in Best Competition Series: Talent/Variety and “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and “The Oprah Conversation” in Best Structured Series.
“RuPaul’s” second award, for Best Ensemble Cast in an Unscripted Series, made it the only program with more than one win.

Holy gore hell. It's only March, and we already have at least two incredibly unique, extremely strange mind-fuck animated films that are definitely not for kids. Dash Shaw's Cryptozoo premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival in January, and The Spine of Night just premiered at the SXSW Film Festival this month. (And let's not forget about that wacky puppet horror Frank & Zed from the Nightstream Film Festival last year.) These films are yet another reminder that animation is a medium, not just a genre, and can be used to tell any kind of story - including extremely violent, gory, not-for-kids stories that could only be realized with animation. Fresh from SXSW, The Spine of Night is an instant cult classic, find-it-on-vhs-anywhere-you-can-at-whichever-video-store-stocks-it, extra gnarly, mind-melting sensation. Just don't watch this sober. Co-written & co-directed by Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King, The Spine of Night is an epic fantasy film ...

One of Family Guy's most beloved characters will have a new voice.
Mike Henry, who has played the role of Cleveland Brown, is exiting the series after two decades.
“It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years,” Henry tweeted on Friday.
“I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color. Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role.”
Henry, who is not Black, has voiced Cleveland on Family Guy since 1999, when the series debuted.
He went on to star as the titular character on spinoff series The Cleveland show for four seasons between 2009-13.
After the show was canceled, he returned to Family Guy in a full-time capacity.
It's unclear whether Henry could be kept on the series in a whole new role, but we're sure an announcement will come down the line.

The Office creator Greg Daniels has cut a blackface scene from a 2012 episode, calling the racist trope “unacceptable” even when used as satire.
In a statement today, Daniels said, “The Office is about a group of people trying to work together with mutual respect despite the inappropriate actions of their boss and assistant manager. The show employed satire to expose unacceptable behavior and deliver a message of inclusion. Today we cut a shot of an actor wearing blackface that was used to criticize a specific racist European practice. Blackface is unacceptable and making the point so graphically is hurtful and wrong. I am sorry for the pain that caused.”
The deleted 2012 Christmas episode scene involves Rainn Wilson’s Dwight dressing up for a holiday party as Belsnickel, a Pennsylvania Dutch folkloric St. Nicolas-like character. The office mates protest when they learn that Belsnickel is typically accompanied by a blackface sidekick named Zwarte Piet,...

Bacon will develop and produce non-scripted shows for the World of Dance and The Wall studio. He is already in development with a couple of projects with the company.
This comes after he created The Hustler, a mystery-based gameshow that was handed a series order by ABC last year. The show, which is hosted by Craig Ferguson, is produced by All3Media’s Studio Lambert, the company behind Undercover Boss and The Circle.
Bacon is a well-known figure in the UK, where he used to host BBC kids’ series Blue Peter as well as The Big Breakfast and presented on BBC radio.
In the States, he previously hosted Nat Geo’s Explorer series, where he hiked with President Barack Obama through Yosemite National Park, and Fox syndicated talkshow Top 30,...

My senior quote was, "I want to go to there," a seemingly insignificant and ambiguous line from none other than 30 Rock's main character Liz Lemon, played by writer, actor, and playwright Tina Fey. At first, it may seem like I did not care about my senior quote and that I was making a joke out of it. That's only partially true. I did care about my senior quote, and because of that, I decided to make a joke out of it, just like Liz Lemon would.
30 Rock is a full-fledged comedy series loosely based off of Tina Fey's life as a sketch comedy writer for Saturday Night Live. The lead, Liz Lemon, is a 42-year-old head writer for a show called Tgs With Tracy Morgan and because of this, she endures bouts of sexism, workplace stress, and life crises . . . every day.

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this weekly column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Fleming: I’m trying to recall a time while I have covered Hollywood where anything caused the level of disruption we are witnessing in this Covid-19 pandemic. In my experience, the tragedy of 9/11 came closest, followed by the L.A. riots, the strike of 2007, the global economic collapse of 2008, and the Sony hack. On all of those, you knew the business would mostly rebound, but the pandemic has shut every aspect of these industries. We don’t really know anything, in terms of when things might come back. And we can’t even say when will come that pivotal cultural moment we’ll point to years from now that let some of the air out of a taut balloon filled with anxiety,...

NBC News anchor Lester Holt, like anyone who works in television news right now, has a backup plan.
"I have a camera and a setup in my condo if it comes to that," he said. "If I can't work in [30 Rock], I'll be broadcasting from my living room. We do what we have to do."
As the novel coronavirus spreads around the United States, journalists are confronting significant logistical — and medical — challenges in fulfilling their daily mission of telling viewers what's going on.

Now that NBC's The Good Place has officially ended, we're going to miss seeing William Jackson Harper as the adorably nerdy (and terribly indecisive) ethics and moral philosophy professor Chidi Anagonye. But that doesn't mean we'll stop fawning over the decisively sexy actor. In addition to the hilarious NBC series, William has appeared in 2018's They Remain and last year's Midsommar, Lost Holiday, and Dark Waters. Soon, we'll also see him star in Barry Jenkins's upcoming Amazon series The Underground Railroad. No doubt his success is due to his crazy talent, but we can't help but think that his crazy hotness has something to do with it, too. Just look at what happens when Chidi takes off those glasses.

Review by Peter BelsitoThis film develops its story and characters in a leisurely manner. Meaning that the story meanders as an ominous tension develops in an interesting way. This dramatic pressure thus convincingly descends upon the endangered weakling characters and slowly an overbearing mood of dread takes over as the film moves toward its grim conclusion.
It’s about people going into the woods and possibly going insane, and it feels like it may have been made by people who went into the woods and possibly went insane.
They Remain looks gorgeous enough to sustain, but it slips through your fingers every time you try to get a hold of it.
Based on Laird Barron’s short story -30-, They Remain is primarily featuring a pair of scientists on the edge of a mysterious woods in which something horrible happened. A cult took up residence in these woods not long ago,...

It's a difficult task to review a film where it's best to go in as blind as possible. They Remain's plot and characters are best kept as neatly under wraps as possible as the most enjoyable viewing experience is trying to piece it all together yourself. That being said, They Remain is an enjoyable albeit a bit flawed psychological thriller.
The barebones premise of The Remain is that two scientists are tasked with surveying an area of land of some importance. They are under the employ of a shadowy corporation that sadly never becomes more involved or integral to the plot.
The story starts out very strong and drops you right into the middle of what's going on without any handholding. In fact, I wish more films were brave enough to treat their audience like They Remain does. But sadly the plot and characters get somewhat boring to watch as...

Two researchers, alone in a barren wilderness, gather clues about a mysterious, invisible threat. As they advance toward answers, the threat advances toward them, and the march toward a murky showdown swells with dread. The premise could describe any number of sci-fi scenarios through the ages. “They Remain,” the new thriller from director Philip Gelatt (“The Bleeding House”) hews closely to some predictable beats, but it’s an engrossing exercise in boiling familiar ingredients down to pure, unbridled creepiness.
Based on the short story by Laird Barron, the movie unfolds in and around a pair of geodesic domes in the middle of nowhere, with a cast almost exclusively comprised of two people. Keith (William Jackson Harper) and Jessica (Rebecca Henderson) are a pair of scientists assigned to investigate the woods where a mysterious cult engaged in horrifying antics ages ago; in its wake, the pair have been tasked with studying...

"When I'm into something, I can't let it go." Paladin has debuted the trailer for a slow burn psychological thriller titled They Remain, from writer/director Philip Gelatt. This first premiered at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival last fall, but hasn't played at many other festivals. Adapted from one of Laird Barron's short stories, the film is about two scientists, who share a romantic history, that are tasked with investigating unnatural animal behavior on the site of a Manson Family-style cult's compound. Actor William Jackson Harper (seen in Paterson, and on "The Good Place") stars along with Rebecca Henderson. This is one of those psychological films that slowly breaks down into the question of "what is real and what is imagined." It also seems like a good companion to Alex Garland's Annihilation, strangely enough. Worth a quick look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Philip Gelatt's They Remain,...

It can be difficult to process the enormous tragedy of real-life horror. Sometimes, small relief can be gained from losing oneself in the fictional variety. This is how I felt while watching the trailer for They Remain, a film that will make its world premiere at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland on Saturday, October 7, ahead of a theatrical release. The trailer is strange and mysterious, featuring a disturbing sound mix, which adds up to an intriguing mixture. Quoting portions from the official synopsis: "Based on the 2010 short story, -30- by award-winning author Laird Barron, They Remain explores the evolving relationship between Keith and Jessica, two scientists who are employed by a vast, impersonal corporation to investigate an unspeakable horror that took...
