If the latest rumors about Mads Mikkelsen’s future casting decisions have you reaching for an alcoholic beverage, his upcoming Another Round may be more to your taste. Quite literally: Mikkelsen here plays a high school teacher who tests a theory with three colleagues that their life will improve if they main a constant blood alcohol level. Delightful chaos, at least a few bad decisions, and a nasty hangover are inevitable as these friends attempt to escape from their midlife crises by raising spirits.
The latest from Thomas Vinterberg—whose recent work has endearingly ricocheted between lush period romances (Far From the Madding Crowd) and submarine dramas (The Command)—seems to have far more on its mind than simply offering an opportunity to watch Mikkelsen dance while sloshed based on today’s new trailer.

While the Cannes Film Festival won’t be happening as planned this year, the French movie celebration earlier this week did reveal the official selection of titles that would’ve led the event this year. Among them is the latest film from Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, known in the English language as “Another Round.” Starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, and Magnus Millang, the comedy is co-written by Vinterberg and “A Hijacking” writer/director Tobias Lindholm. Watch the first trailer below.
The film centers on four close friends, all of whom are high school teachers, who decide to test the idea that their lives would be improved by constantly maintaining a level of low-grade drunkenness. Based on the first trailer, it appears the experiment spirals out of control as the gang pushes one another to further and further extremes.
“Another Round” is Vinterberg’s first film since 2018’s submarine disaster movie “The Command.

Stage and screen acting legend Max Von Sydow, who starred in The Seventh Seal and appeared in The Exorcist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Flash Gordon, and Game of Thrones, died on March 8 at the age of 90, according to Variety.
“It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max von Sydow,” his wife, the producer Catherine Brelet, said in a statement.
Von Sydow made his Hollywood debut as Jesus in the 1965 Biblical epic The Greatest Story Ever Told. This gave him the authority to observe “if Jesus were alive today and saw what they are saying in his name, he would never stop throwing up” in Woody Allen’s 1986 film Hannah and Her Sisters. Von Sydow had the power to compel Satan as Father Merrin in William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic The Exorcist and Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), directed by John Boorman.

Max von Sydow, the tall, tragic-faced Swedish actor whose name was virtually synonymous with the films of Ingmar Bergman, has died. He was 90.
Variety has confirmed that the actor died on Sunday.
Von Sydow, who became Bergman’s symbol for the modern man in such films as “The Passion of Anna” and “Shame” after making his Bergman debut as the errant knight in “The Seventh Seal,” also had an unusually prolific career in Hollywood and international films.
He made his American debut in the role of Jesus Christ in George Stevens’ turgid 1965 epic “The Greatest Story Ever Told” and went on to make strong impressions with audiences in “The Exorcist,” Woody Allen’s “Hannah and Her Sisters,” David Lynch’s “Dune,” “Three Days of the Condor,” “Hawaii,” “Conan the Barbarian” and “Awakenings.”

As the weekend hits, it’s time to bring back the review round-up in order to cover a few more titles arriving in theaters. Today, we’ll be briefly discussing two particular genre efforts, each of them quite different from the other. The movies in question are the true life drama The Command (formerly known as Kursk on the festival circuit) as well as the anthology horror tale Nightmare Cinema. Both of these flicks offers up something different and may or may not be worth your time. That question is something I’ll attempt to answer right now, so let us dive in! The Command It’s impossible not to currently think about HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl while watching The Command. A high profile Russian tragedy that could have, if not been prevented, then reduced with less bureaucracy and corruption? Yeah, there are parallels. However, while the cable prestige program has drawn raves,...

In the summer of 2000, the Russian submarine named Kursk took on a naval exercise in the Barents Sea, the first of its kind since the fall of the Soviet Union a decade earlier. The Command (released under the title Kursk elsewhere), written by Robert Rodat and directed by Thomas Vinterberg, tells of the sub’s crew, the crew’s families and the government that failed them. Without fully spoiling this real-life event, things do not go well from those onboard the vessel.

Post-ussr Russia is floundering, wages are shrinking, and the military is energized only by principle. Speeches about duty and sacrifice underline what’s about to happen. As superficial and silly as it may seem, the title of a film can really help or hurt the project’s financial prospects. A great title can be memorable and instantly recognizable, leading to increased buzz and, hopefully, ticket sales. A terrible title can be confusing and off-putting, failing to sell audiences and attract eyeballs. For Saban Films, the title “Kursk” apparently falls in the latter category. So now, as the film, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, arrives in theaters, the distributor decided it’s best to call the film “The Command.” Yeah, not great, either.

Take a look at new images of French actress Léa Seydoux, co-star of the 'submarine disaster' feature "Kursk", in the December 2018 issue of "Marie Claire" (France) magazine, wearing Louis Vuitton, photographed by Nick Hudson:
"I've always felt that Americans are very in the moment," said the French actress.
"There's not so much melancholia and mystery as there is in France. Everything must be understood. Everything must be analyzed.
"It's a misogynistic world. It's because of what we ask of actresses. We ask them to be sensitive, fragile, desirable. And men? We ask them to be strong and virile.
"I like a man who can respect a woman. When he's real attentive, I think that is very manly. To respect a woman is divine..."

Luc Besson’s Europacorp produced the film, which is based on the tragic true story of a series of explosions that sunk the Russian Kursk nuclear submarine to the bottom of the Barents Sea in August 2000. Many crewmembers died instantly, but a small crew managed to seal themselves in a safe rear compartment. With the clock ticking down, other nations offered their assistance, but ...

Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp has appointed Régis Marillas to the position of interim deputy CEO. Marillas was previously the company’s chief COO.
In his new role, Marillas will assist Besson, the chief executive chairman, until the appointment of a new management team as part of the financially struggling banner’s current restructuring. Marillas joined EuropaCorp in 2005 and was appointed financial director in 2012.
Marc Shmuger, the former Universal Pictures chairman who was the L.A.-based CEO of EuropaCorp until the end of 2017, has not yet been permanently replaced. Besson immediately stepped in as interim CEO, and no appointments have been made since then. Besson is currently under investigation in France on an allegation of rape by actress Sand Van Roy.

For many of us of an impressionable age and frame of mind in the year 2000, the Kursk submarine disaster occupies a uniquely chilling part of the imagination. Even far removed and only getting updates via news reports, the real-time experience of the excruciating 7-day delay between the explosions that sent the Russian nuclear submarine to the bottom of the Barents Sea and the rescue mission divers finally opening its hatch, caught international attention in the same way imperiled space missions used to, or, a decade later, a Chilean mine collapse would.
This is both a blessing and a burden for Thomas Vinterberg’s expensive, glossy recreation of the disaster and its immediate aftermath, “Kursk.” On the one hand, it’s a story everyone knows, and on the other hand, it’s a story everyone knows. How to make it feel new and exciting while being respectful of the real lives...

Skateboarding on the cinematic spectrum of punk to mainstream, Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg no longer wears ripped jeans. Once the co-conspirator behind the Dogme 95 manifesto with Lars Von Trier — a raw, minimalist, limitations-driven punk-cinema movement ala the early White Stripes rules of only 2 instruments to find pureness —Vinterberg put away his Diy, impish, abrasive tendencies long ago in favor of something more refined. He’s continued with resonant art films (the magnificent “The Hunt”), but has evolved and matured too, taking on more mainstream work like 2015’s romantic drama “Far From The Madding Crowd.

"Captain! We heard something happen to the Kursk?" An international trailer has debuted for a submarine thriller titled Kursk, telling the tragic true story of a Russian submarine stuck at the bottom of the ocean. The ship is deemed unsinkable but explosions on a test run leave it rendered useless, and instead of rescuing the remaining crew, the Russians left it there and wouldn't do anything. Supposedly for political reasons, which is hopefully what this film gets into along with everything else. This harrowing English-language take on the Kursk story features Matthias Schoenaerts, with Léa Seydoux, Colin Firth, Max von Sydow, August Diehl, Steven Waddington, and Matthias Schweighöfer. The film is going to have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend, hence the new trailer out now, even though there's no Us release yet. This looks damn good, and unfortunately very sad, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

The Kursk submarine disaster is a prime example of government-sanctioned inefficiency and indecency. On August 12th, 2000, during a Russian naval exercise, a practice torpedo exploded aboard a nuclear-powered submersible, sending it careening toward the bottom of the Barents Sea. After the sub crashed, a second, larger explosion killed most of the men on board and sent the few survivors (23 in total) to one of the still-intact, though waterlogged and oxygen deficient, rear compartments. There they waited for a rescue that would, tragically, never come due to antiquated technology and the unyielding arrogance of Russian leaders.

“The Old Man and the Gun,” starring Robert Redford and helmed by David Lowery, and “Life Itself,” from “This is Us” creator Dan Fogelman will have their European premieres at the Zurich Film Festival.
“The Old Man and the Gun” could be Redford’s acting swansong. “Rumored to be Robert Redford’s final performance, this quiet spin on a mythological American type — a man who robs banks armed only with his charm — feels like a great way to go,” Variety said in its Telluride review. “Life Itself” sees Fogelman direct from his own script. The rom-com stars Annette Bening, Oscar Isaac, and Olivia Wilde.

Mary Poppins (1964) was nominated for 13 Oscars winning 5. Will Mary Poppins Returns (2018) also win Oscar hearts?
Since scores are often one of the very last components to fall into place in post-production, determining which scores might stand out at year's end is like throwing darts blindfolded. Each year some composers are replaced between our first round of predictions and the time their films arrive. Plus some 2018 movies haven't even hired a composer yet. Presumably they're waiting for Alexandre Desplat's schedule to open up. Only half joking! The perpetually in demand French composer and double Oscar winner generally scores anywhere from 5 to 10 (gulp) movies a year and he only has three films currently scheduled for release in 2018. Other Oscar favorites who have suspiciously empty schedules this year include Hans Zimmer and Thomas Newman.
