Filmed "on the spur of the moment" in 1984 by Derek Jarman on his brand new hand held consumer personal movie camera, which had been given to him as a gift. In the excitement of "I just want to film something," Jarman visited one of his favorite London gay clubs, and filmed the entire thing in essentially one "stream of consciousness" take.
After Jarman's death in 1994, ten years after filming had been completed, the previously unseen (by the public) footage was in the possession of Jarman's good friend Ron Peck, for twenty years. It was Peck who made the decision to release the "found footage" film, essentially "as is," with little to no editing or other production being performed on what Jarman had filmed in 1984, thereby making Jarman and Peck uncredited producers (the first producer credit of Jarman's career), and Jarman uncredited camera operator, writer, and director. Also, it made thirty year old footage "new," thereby allowing thirty year old footage to be both "new" and "found footage," twenty years after the death of the writer, producer, director.
A year after Will You Dance with Me? was filmed, London's longest running gay leather bar The Backstreet opened up downstairs from Benjy's. Both clubs were filmed for a couple of episodes of the American sitcom Married with Children in the early 1990's. Benjy's eventually closed in the early 2000's and The Backstreet closed in 2022. As of 2023, the building is derelict and awaiting redevelopment.
