Inter Yapim is in post-production on brutal revenge saga “Sayara,” directed by Turkish horror genre specialist Can Evrenol, whose film “Baskin” premiered in TIFF’s Midnight Madness section.
The Istanbul-based company has dropped a teaser for “Sayara,” which is being packaged as both a four-episode miniseries and a dark 90-minute horror thriller. Variety has been given an exclusive first look above.
“Sayara” is the moniker of the title character described in promotional materials as a “brooding femme fatale from Turkmenistan.” Sayara works as a cleaning lady in one of Istanbul’s gyms. The revenge plot kicks in when her older sister, Yonca, is raped and killed by Barış – the spoiled owner of the gym, with whom Yonca has an illicit affair – and his three friends. Barış’ father is a member of Parliament who pulls strings, so her death is ruled a suicide in court. But Sayara’s father is Shamil Hskaov,...

Can Evrenol broke into the horror scene with his Turkish nightmare Baskin, a festival smash hit that called back to 80s classics like Hellraiser.
He has since directed Housewife and Girl With No Mouth, and next up is the brutal revenge flick, Sayara, which is currently in post-production.
Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive first images from Sayara, which is described as a brutal anti-revenge film with a brutal anti-hero.
“Sayara is the name of the most unsuspected femme fatale from Turkmenistan. When her sister is murdered by a bunch of rich kids with political connections, Sayara goes on a head-bashing, eye-gouging, bone-smashing rampage of revenge, with some sambo and jiujitsu action!”
Duygu Kocabiyik stars as Sayara with Turkish heartthrob Emre Kizilirmak in a role that will truly shock his fans.
Writer-director Can Evrenol tell is the film is “a toxic psycho-sexual drama [that] slowly becomes a violent martial arts revenge flick.

Indiecan Entertainment has unveiled an official US trailer for an indie post-apocalyptic adventure film titled Girl With No Mouth, following a group of children who suffer from deformities due to a toxic explosion. The film is made by Turkish filmmaker Can Evrenol, who broke out in the genre world with his horror film Baskin from TIFF a few years ago. This is a clever concept as well - enhancing a post-apocalyptic survival story with these kids and their missing parts. Girl With No Mouth stars Denizhan Akbaba, Elif Sevinç, Özgür Civelek, Kaan Alpdayi, Sermet Yesil, and Mehmet Yilmaz Ak. I'm curious to see where it all leads and what it's trying to say. Perhaps just that they are safer with everyone's strengths working together. Here's the official trailer (+ posters) for Can Evrenol's Girl With No Mouth, direct from YouTube: In Girl With No Mouth, a group of children who...

Ariana Grande is not allowing this allegedly "Dangerous Woman" to star in her and Justin Bieber's "Stuck With U" music video. Between Don't F**k With Cats and Tiger King, cats are having a major true-crime docuseries moment on Netflix. The latter features the so-called "Mother Teresa of cats" herself, Carole Baskin, who runs the animal sanctuary Big Cat Rescue. It follows her long-time nemesis Joe Exotic (Joseph Maldonado-Passage), a zookeeping personality who was arrested in 2018 for plotting Baskin's murder. So what happened to Baskin after Maldonado-Passage's plans came crashing down? Very much alive, she continues what she's been doing since 1992 - running Big Cat Rescue and saving wild cats.
Who Is Carole Baskin?
According to the Big Cat Rescue website, Baskin is the founder and CEO of the Tampa animal sanctuary, switching from big-cat owner to conservationist in her early career. In its younger days, Baskin's sanctuary was full of breeding and tourism. In 1997, she stopped breeding altogether. She rebranded Big Cat Rescue in 2003 and asked that owners who left...

Selena Gomez performed at the 2019 American Music Awards with her first new songs in years, which are generally considered to be about the end of her relationship with Justin Bieber. The performance might have casual viewers wondering when and why they broke up in the first place. Although neither of them ever spoke about it in detail, we've got a pretty good idea of what led to their final split.
The couple had a long and messy history together, with a constant on-and-off relationship dating back to the beginning of the decade. After a lot of back and forth and dating other people, they did reconcile one more time in late 2017, but as always, drama was never far away. By sometime in the Spring of 2018, E! reported that their "break is becoming a full-blown breakup," and Bieber was quickly spotted with other women, including model Baskin Champion and, eventually, his...

Living in Chicago, I spend much of my year being jealous of all the people I see online going to the various genre film festivals held around the parts of the country that aren’t here… until now.
For the first time ever, Chicago is getting its very own full-blown genre festival with Cinepocalypse, a week-long event running November 2nd–9th at the Music Box Theatre, the best place to see a movie in the entire city. Formerly the Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival (which I have attended since it began and always completely loved), Cinepocalypse now has a new venue, a larger and more ambitious slate of programming, and dozens of special guests. It’s going to be bigger and better than any festival of its kind the city has ever seen, and I can’t wait to be there as much as possible to see as many cool movies as possible.

Let no one say that young Turkish director Can Evrenol doesn't have an eye for film. Throughout his sophomore feature, the English-language horror film Housewife, Evrenol presents the viewer with enticing visuals, almost enough of them to distract from what is otherwise a fairly disappointing follow-up to his 2015 debut, Baskin. Housewife finds the titular woman, an emotionally scarred and frail beauty named Holly, as she and her infinitely supportive husband navigate some pretty weird goings-on. The film opens on a flashback to what appears to be the murder of her older sister by their mother going through her umpteenth mental breakdown, and this image haunts Holly's dreams to the present day. When she is reintroduced to an old friend who has become involved in...

Recent years have seen a return to giallo, mainly in independent and foreign horror cinema. The genre doesn’t always hold up because it is inherently weird and often nonsensical. For diehard admirers of Fulci and Bava, however, Turkish director Can Evrenol has become an excitingly bizarre voice in cinema. His feature debut, Baskin, blew many a mind two years ago with its hedonistic madness. Evernol returns this year with Housewife, and while it may not reach the levels of incoherent thrills that his first feature achieved, it’s an involving vision of sensory insanity.
As the title suggests, the film centers on the wife of a true crime author, tormented by a traumatic incident in her past. When a long-lost friend convinces her to attend a cult gathering, the group’s charismatic leader—a man who claims to walk through dreams—initiates her into a bizarre mental maze that may undo her.

Not even a year has passed since The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival emerged as a must-attend genre festival, but year two is already looking to cement such talk. We Got This Covered reported from the trenches last October, where I served as one of the festival’s inaugural judges. Something we couldn’t be happier for.

Be sure to peruse Wave 1’s sacrificial offerings, but that’s old news – are you ready for Round 2? I know,...

Horror movies don’t need to be expensive to get audiences screaming. Some of the genre’s key titles have used budgetary limitations to their advantage, creating creeping dread from the isolation of single locations or the simplicity of a killer hiding right behind the door in your own home. IndieWire has selected 11 scary films now streaming on Netflix that prove horror doesn’t need big stars or flashy SFX teams to create a big onscreen impact.

As it unfurled past midnight, I realized that I was in way over my head with the evil on display in Can Evrenol's Baskin. That screening at Fantastic Fest in 2015 left me feeling quite unnerved, beyond what the very positive advance word had teased. Now the first trailer for his followup, Housewife, has arrived -- via Bloody Disgusting -- and it's clear that, though the settings have changed, the terror is just as gruesome and potentially disturbing as ever. Our own Andrew Mack watched selected footage from the film at Frontières@Fantasia 2017 in July, so allow me to quote from his report: "Holly, a woman who suffered a horrible trauma at an early age at the hands of her mother lives with her husband...

We now have the world exclusive trailer premiere for this must-see sexy and mortifying mix […]...

There is an especially fun weekend of horror cinema coming to Brooklyn this October. After a fantastic debut year last year the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival is back with a first wave of already stellar titles. The festival has also expanded this year to four days and will extend their reach to more cinemas around the Brooklyn, New York area, including one of the newest Alamo Drafthouses in the country. First wave titles include the anticipated Housewife from Turkish director Can Evrenol (Baskin), the horror-comedy Tragedy Girls, Mexican horror anthology Mexico Barbaro II and a little Protuguese slasher flick that I liked The Forest of Lost Souls. The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival returns to New York City October 12th till the 15th, bringing...

This year we got to see footage from Can Evrenol's (Baskin) Housewife, Michael Peterson's Knuckleball, Brian O'Malley's (Let Us Prey) The Lodgers, Leo Shcerman's Trench 11 and Bob Barrett's television series Untold Horror. Now, we the press are not allowed to go into any great detail about what we watched today so in that regard you may be disappointed. However, you will get my impressions from the footage we saw and some suggestions about what to look for when these films make their way around the festival circuit and into distribution in whatever territories they are sold...

Just weeks after launching its equity crowdfunding campaign, the folklore-tinged horror anthology feature “The Field Guide to Evil” has been officially given the green light. Producers Christos V. Konstantakopoulos (“Before Midnight,” “The Lobster”), Keith and Jess Calder (“Anomalisa,” “Blair Witch,” “You’re Next”) and Legion M, billed as the first ever fan-owned media company, have all invested and come onboard as Executive Producers for the film.
The anthology is “a global exploration into dark folklore, and will feature eight terrifying tales from the world’s most exciting new voices in international filmmaking.” The film is currently engaged in its first-of-its-kind equity crowd-funding campaign on First Democracy Vc, a funding portal brought through a partnership between Indiegogo and MicroVentures. Between talking about freak Winter weather in our respective countries (Apparantly four straight days of snow in Istanbul is not a thing. It is especially inconvenient when it begins on the same day you begin filming your new film and you have not planned for snow.) Evrenol delivered this first official still from the production taken by Ece Celebioglu. He says that the tagline for the pic is, "There's Only You and Your Dreams". The temptation from an production design point of view is to say that Evrenol's gone Gothic with...

This has easily been the hardest time I’ve ever had whittling down my favorite genre offerings for the year. I was fortunate to watch so many great movies throughout the course of the last 12 months (over 150—new and old!), and considering the quality of projects from both the studio and independent sides of the business was exceedingly high, I probably could have featured 20 films on this list, and still would have at least a dozen more I could recommend to fellow fans. 2016 was definitely one of the best recent years in horror and that’s pretty rad.
Beyond the realm of movies, horror also had a strong showing on TV, as it seems almost every single network these days has something of interest if you’re looking to immerse yourself in horror on the small screen. I was also fortunate enough to attend several amazing genre events in 2016, making...

Turkish director Can Evrenol is adept at atmospherics, but his script gets lost in the dark
This Turkish horror movie about a group of policemen who stumble upon a satanic mass, complete with a gimp orgy and a demon butcher, has all kinds of grisly fun with production design and hallucinatory shifts in reality. However, the screenplay is such a muddle that the audience is left groping through curtains of entrails and flayed skin trying to figure out what in the world – or perhaps the underworld – is going on. The film, which owes a debt to Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, is based on an acclaimed short film by director Can Evrenol; he’s clearly a film-maker with a flair for creating a macabre and unsettling atmosphere. However, for all the mortified, mottled flesh and salacious shots of butcher’s equipment, Baskin is just not very frightening.
