When “The X-Files” premiered on Sept. 10, 1993 on Fox, viewers had no idea how incredibly bizarre the cases tackled by FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) would be.
Anything that was deemed paranormal, supernatural or unexplainable was called an “X-File” — the cases that no one else in the agency wanted to touch.
In the show’s 11 seasons, they dealt with more than just aliens and shadowy government conspiracies. Their cases involved demons, ghosts, serial killers, sea monsters and even vampires. Here are the episodes with the scariest villains and killer creatures.

While many retrospective looks at cinematic years past find plenty dividing the current state of movies from all that came before, 2004, in many ways, still feels representative of our idea of the modern film industry. Superheroes, sequels, and superhero sequels dominated the box office, while the award shows favored an...

If, by chance, you’ve never heard of Australian genre director Sean Byrne, you need to remedy that fact right away. While far from a household name, Byrne directed two of the best horror movies of the last twenty years – The Loved Ones in 2009 and The Devil’s Candy in 2015. The Loved Ones, in particular, is a gem, with star Robin McLeavy’s performance as high school stalker Lola, being one of the most memorable horror baddies in recent memory.
And now, it looks like Byrne is finally directing another film, with Variety revealing that he’s set to direct the horror flick Dangerous Animals, which stars Hassie Harrison (the Yellowstone girl who caused a major bunkhouse feud a few seasons back), Jai Courtney, and Josh Heuston.
Here’s what Variety has to say about the project:

There’s a lot to miss about the ’90s. Video stores. Arcades. Music Television. On and on. One of the many things I miss is the slew of original thrillers that used to grace the big screen. Each one with varying amounts of horror, cheesiness, and sex. Richard Gere and Michael Douglas were involved in more sex and danger in the ’90s than Maureen Prescott’s ghost. But today isn’t about watching the guy from Falling Down rip his expensive and pleated slacks off in a fever of passion. Rock ‘n’ roll and horror: a match made in hell! From electrifying riffs to spine-chilling screams, these heavy metal mashups create a headbanging, heart-pounding experience that resonates with rebels and thrill-seekers alike. Whether you’re a fan of rebellious music or cinema of the fringe, nearly everyone can agree they go together like peanut butter and jelly.
What makes them such perfect partners? Perhaps it’s their shared love for the dark, the dangerous, and the fantastical. Rock ‘n’ roll has always been the music of outcasts, and horror dares to delve into our deepest fears. Together, they create a symphony of shock that thrills and chills.
From demonic deals to killer concerts, rock ‘n’ roll horror movies explore the intersection of music and mayhem. They’re films that rock, scare, and leave us begging for an encore.
So grab your leather jacket, tune your air guitar, and turn up the volume.

With so many streaming services to choose from, it can often be difficult to find the right one to spend your hard-earned dough on. That being said, Hulu has remained among the most exciting and content-heavy platforms alongside Netflix, really cementing itself as one of the most appealing options out there in recent years thanks to its collection of original content and very, very deep library of licensed films.
Like every other streaming service, they bring us new titles every month and July is looking to be quite a good one. Especially if you’re a horror fan. Admittedly, Hulu has always been pretty reliable when it comes to this particular genre, and that’s a reputation they seem intent to keep, as next month will bring us the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Freddy vs. Jason, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, House of 1000 Corpses, The Ninth Gate, The House That Jack Built...

2017 was a horrific year, but it was also a great year for horror cinema. 2016 gave us some instant classics, but I would argue that this year’s offerings were more diverse, fascinating, and forward-thinking. There were mainstream films—It, Annabelle: Creation, and Happy Death Day, to name a few—that I didn’t personally love, but their success has paved the way for more genre cinema overall. We’re finally seeing stories that reflect our times. I had the honor of witnessing this upsurge of conversation and success at Sitges’ 50th anniversary event, which was my cinematic and personal highlight of the year.
In terms of television, Twin Peaks: The Return has to go down in history as one of broadcasted horror’s best moments. Lynch dialed up the intensity and the surrealism in his new installment, and the result was stunning—not only spiritually terrifying, but beautiful and moving as well.

Out today on Blu-ray and DVD from Scream Factory, The Devil's Candy, is Sean Byrne's hard-rocking horror flick. You may have seen that we've given a lot of support to this film, and that's simply because it's awesome. You can read Todd's review here and my own interview with Byrne here, among our other coverage. Because of these previous articles, there's not a whole lot more to be said on the film, I'll mention the basics: Ethan Embry (Cheap Thrills, Fashionista) stars as Jesse, a struggling painter and heavy metal-loving dad who's trying to support his family. He gets an opportunity to do just that, but at what cost? As it turns out, the stakes are high, there's a Faustian deal in the mix, and then there's a...

Out in limited theaters and on VOD this Friday from IFC Midnight is The Devil’s Candy, which was written and directed by Sean Byrne (the creative force behind the equally fantastic thriller The Loved Ones). The film stars Ethan Embry as an embattled father who will stop at nothing to keep his family—and particularly his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco)—safe from devilish forces in the form of a possessed man named Ray (portrayed by the always engaging Pruitt Taylor Vince).
Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Byrne about how his latest film became a way to explore his own fears and insecurities—both personally and professionally—and how he enjoys trying to subvert horror fans' expectations whenever he takes the directorial reins. Byrne also discussed his thoughts on celebrating heavy metal culture for The Devil’s Candy, collaborating with his cast, and more.

This Friday, IFC Midnight will unleash the heavy metal horror of Sean Byrne's The Devil's Candy in select theaters and on VOD, and to celebrate, Mondo and Death Waltz will release Michael Yezerski's intense score digitally, followed by a vinyl release this May.

I’ve enjoyed Ethan Embry’s on-screen work for a long time now, and it’s been great to see him keeping busy these days—from his work on Grace and Frankie, to his appearance on the season 6 premiere of The Walking Dead, to his fantastic performances in genre fare like Cheap Thrills, Late Phases, The Guest, and his recent role in Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy, which arrives in select theaters and on VOD on Friday, March 17th from IFC Midnight.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak in depth with Embry about his work on the film, and he discussed the appeal of playing a conflicted father who will stop at nothing to keep his family safe. Embry also chatted about working with Byrne and how he hopes fans appreciate the way the filmmaker’s vision for The Devil’s Candy represents all the metal aficionados out there.

If you missed it on the festival circuit, Sean Byrne's The Devil's Candy, starring Ethan Embry (Cheap Thrills, Fashionista, Can't Hardly Wait), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Heavy, Monster), Kiara Glasco (Maps To The Stars, Bitten) and Shiri Appleby (Unreal, Roswell) is coming to a theater or TV near you this Friday. You can see the film in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms on March 17th from IFC Midnight. Byrne, who previously directed the fan favorite cult horror film The Loved Ones, is back with another fantastic piece of filmmaking. News of a new Terrence Malick movie should always be received with cautious optimism, as the media-shy filmmaker has made a habit throughout his career of protracted post-production schedules and delayed release dates. Lauded indie filmmaker Jeff Nichols finally entered bonafide awards bonanza territory this year with the release of his historical drama “Loving,” which garnered star Ruth Negga her first Oscar nomination, in addition to Golden Globe nods for both the Irish actress and her co-star Joel Edgerton.

Edgerton, it seems, is becoming something of a Nichols regular — and just ask Michael Shannon, Nichols is very good to his regulars — having starred in both of Nichols’ 2016 releases, including both “Loving” and “Midnight Special.” In fact, it was Edgerton’s work on the sci-fi drama that convinced Nichols he was the right actor to portray the gruff protagonist of his feature, Richard Loving. It’s a role short on lines (Richard wasn’t much of a talker), but long on emotional resonance.

It is a rarity to see a truly unsettling trailer, come along. The first official trailer for Sean Byrne's (The Loved Ones) The Devil's Candy, has been released. To show at AMC Theatres, in the United States, IFC Films will handle this title's distribution. The story of The Devil's Candy involves: a haunted house in small town Texas, heavy metal and a struggling artist. All of these elements come together to do the Satan's bidding. Fans of true horror can take a look at the film's first trailer here. The trailer shows Jesse (Ethan Embry) and a strange art piece. He is unsure of his creative inspiration; but, viewers will know. The film clip also shows a mysterious kidnapper (Ray Smilie), in a red track suit. He shambles about from scene to scene. Both characters meet at a strange, cursed home. The Devil's Candy is slated for a Us run.

"It's like it flowed through me. I don't remember painting this." IFC Midnight has unveiled the trailer for a horror film titled The Devil's Candy, a creepy satanic possession tale about a struggling painter who moves into a home in Texas. Ethan Embry stars as the father of a young family who is possessed by satanic forces, creating some freaky artwork. The cast includes Shiri Appleby, Kiara Glasco and Pruitt Taylor Vince. This is from the same filmmaker who made the cult horror hit The Loved Ones, and the film first premiered at festivals a few years ago. It's always a little disconcerting when a movie kicks around the block for a few years before it finally sees the light of day. Should there be a 'ground zero' of knowledge for movie criticism? And what makes a critic effective at their job?
When I sat down to watch It Follows for the first time at the start of last year, I had no idea what I was getting. I'm increasingly an avoider of trailers, and try as much as possible to see films cold. It doesn't always work, but in the case of It Follows, it very much did.
As I’ve written before, the film had a very primal effect on me, in that it had me backing further and further into my seat, genuinely unnerved and more than a little scared by what was happening on screen.
I hadn't felt like that watching a film for a long time, and my eventual write-up reflected that. Aside from the subtexts of the movie, which I, in truth, only came to later,...

Demonic activity, skinheads, and psychopaths: these are the words one might use to describe the upcoming genre films of 2016. From a possessed painter, to a devilish leg wound, to full-on war waged within the confines of a futuristic apartment complex, blood flies and fingers point in what looks to be one of the most intense, purposely-paced and experimental years for independent films to date.
Traces of David Cronenberg's Videodrome and Scanners, Stuart Rosenberg's The Amityville Horror, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and Nicholas Hytner's The Crucible can be found within these electrifying new entries from promising, emerging artists, proving that pulling from the past can wind up making a project feel fresh and new.
Although many of the films carry similar traits and themes like directorial debuts, single set locations, cult activity, and the ever-present presence of the devil's unholy spirit, each of these features is unique in its own persona.

Looking for good books about the movies to read? We've got a bumper selection of recommendations right here...
A confession. I actually started writing this article in 2013, and the reason you've only reading it now is that I've made sure I've read every book on this list, save for one or two where I've marked otherwise. As such, what you're getting is a very personal list of recommendations. Each of these books has at least something to it that I think is of interest to someone wanting to learn more about film - or just enjoy stories of movie making.
I've tended to avoid picture books, with one exception, as these ones I've chosen are all intended to be chock-full of words, to relax with at the end of a long day. Which is what I did. There are one or two notable omissions, as I'm still...

In his long-awaited follow-up to the brutal 2009 prom night from hell feature film The Loved Ones, writer/director Sean Byrne is back with an even more outrageous spin on a group of innocents pulled into a deadly situation. It's quite a drastic location change to switch from filming in the island country of New Zealand to flying around the world to capture the dusty city of Austin, Texas, but Byrne photographs the land like he's lived there all his life.
As the satanic story unfolds of this small southern family caught within the encroaching fire that burned the previous residents long before they moved in, they find that even the smallest cinder left behind still manages to catch their perfect lives aflame, and engulf them whole. The evil presence still trapped in this house on this hot desert soil is still very much present and hungry for the sweet taste of blood.
