Paraguay's first caper movie. Hopefully not last.

Warning: Spoilers
There's many comparisons to be made with 7 Cajas (2012), from the same directing/producing team. Let's skip them, although I just want to personally add that this movie is better looking and a little more twee-free.

It's also very nice to see that Schémbori and Maneglia understood what made 7 Cajas stand above other attempts at mainstream cinema in Paraguay: the acting. Paraguayan media has a terrible problem of relying on theater actors. The overacting needed on the stage bothers at the big screen. So to break free this time they cast a troupe of new, fresh actors, with varied results.

But OK, let's stick to the current film. Set in one of the poorest Asuncion's neighborhoods, which tends to suffer river floods every year, there lives our main hero with his family of mother, baby brother and grandparents. The abuelo (played superbly by Jesús Pérez) used to be a treasure hunter until he fell to a stroke just before finding the big one. From the clues left by him a plot worthy of Disney's National Treasure begins-- of course with the same humor and quirks a Paraguayan story would display: crime, deceit, connivance and LOTS of Guarani language.

The movie falls short from epic like its predecessor by keeping it tight-framed into few locations, showing that the most interesting of Asuncion is the people living in there. Photography deserves a great deal of praise, making great use of both natural and setup lighting. The acting... well, it's still a little affected, only fresher. Special mention goes to Leticia Panambi Sosa, doing a great work at being just close to over-the-top villainess without crossing over into ham. Other members of the cast are kinda rough-over- the-edges but still funny when needed to be.

To escape financial hardship a group of very Paraguayan characters has to find a 147 years lost cache of gold. Will you -the viewer- find gold in this movie? I did.

Strong 7: Well crafted crime/thriller/adventure

Warning: Spoilers
Recommended. Well crafted treasure hunt thriller which builds momentum well, with some moments really standing out near the beginning (cinematographically speaking). If you are looking for good entertainment or want a movie you can watch with your family this is probably it (there is some grit and very little gore) - not suitable for the very youngest (there is two murder, not very graphical).

The casting is excellent and the realism is quite good. There is also the classical leads in the story, some drive the story and all are wuite well woven in. Cinematographically speaking this is classical work with nothing really standing out other than some moments which are really well crafted. The thrill momentum is also more pushed by the motives presented by the persons who drive the plot (yes, this is a character driven plotline, where there really in only one real break in character rationality throughout).

There is an undertone which is refelcted by water, the river which is rising, the breaks in the pipes near the treasures and the religious festival.

Treasure hunt in Paraguay.
deloudelouvain8 October 2020
I started watching this movie without expecting too much of it, cinema from Paraguay I can't say I'm familiar with it. I watched it more in the hope to perfect my Spanish but since they translated Los Buscadores in The Gold Seekers I wasn't expecting to learn a lot either. But it was a pleasant surprise, it's a good entertaining movie, a little treasure hunt in Paraguay. There's some mystery and suspense that keeps your attention. The cast was also good, all unknown actors to me, but certainly not bad. Los Buscadores is an easy movie to watch, easy popcorn entertainment.

Fun and Chaotic
Minnesota_Reid17 April 2018
This is an excellent caper movie by the director of the superb '7 Boxes' from a few years ago. Initially, I thought this might be a 'Young Indiana Jones' (or should I say 'Young Paraguay Jones'?) as our young hero looks for a treasure map. Instead, the movie soon smoothly transitions into an excellent caper movie. Plans are made and go awry. Other groups try to horn into the action, and a lot of fun chaos ensues.

The movie gradually introduces quite a few characters, but they are well-drawn and well acted, so it is never difficult to tell them apart. The Asuncion setting is also interesting, with the river rising to threaten whole neighborhoods. The motif of rising water is cleverly echoed in throughout the movie.

The title in English, The Gold Seekers, is not really accurate. It isn't gold that they are after. But I suppose using the title 'The Searchers' would evoke John Wayne in a confusing way.
