- Amrajeet Kapoor lives joyfully at the age of 90 his wish is to get a family photograph and mentioning Kapoor and Sons and frame it in the hall of his house. He suddenly suffer an heart attack and is rushed to hospital by his son Harsh and his wife Sunita his grandsons Rahul whose writer in London and Arjun who works in New Jersey soon rush home.The Kapoor's aren't happy with each other as they seem to be and have a estranged relationship and frequent arguments in between this Rahul and Arjun meet Tia on separate occasions and develop a friendship. While Sr Kapoor is in hospital the family plan his birthday party which is on his day of discharge where at the party Rahul and Arjun meet Tia where Rahul clears the air that they don't have any relationship apart from business. But soon party goes hey wire when Anu arrives whom Sunita believes Harsh is having an affair while Amarjeet as an argument with his Sr friends during a bridge game. Amarjeet is waiting for his younger son to return to complete the family pic but but is worried seeing his family's estranged relationship.—alex.mjacko@gmail.com
- Estranged brothers Rahul (Fawad Afzal Khan) and Arjun Kapoor (Sidharth Malhotra) are compelled to return to their childhood home in Coonoor when their 90-year-old grandfather Amarjeet (Rishi Kapoor) suffers a heart attack. Their parents, Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and Sunita Kapoor (Ratna Pathak) also reside here. Rahul is a published writer and lives in London, who personifies the image of successful young man who appears to be the most mature person in the family. Rahul's manager (Elena Fernandes) in London wants him to complete his next book as the deadline to the publishers is in 3 weeks. On the other hand, Arjun lives in New Jersey struggles to find a job he can stick with and resorts to running a website and works part-time as a bartender to make ends meet and writes in the meantime.
Rahul is loved more by his parents for being successful. This doesn't go well with Arjun. Arjun notices that while his room has been changed into a storage, but Rahul's room has been preserved just like the way he left it. Harsh is angry with Arjun when he informs them that he has given up with websites business and is now concentrating on his writing. Arjun asks Harsh not to meddle in his professional life as he knows nothing about it. While the brothers struggle to get along, the parents, Harsh and Sunita Kapoor too are troubled with their own marriage. Harsh is discouraging of Sunita's wish to open a catering business and Sunita brings up Harsh's old affair which proves to be an existing problem in their relationship. Sunita argues that her own sister Timmy (Rupa Kamath) runs a catering business and earns much more than Harsh.
The brothers visit their Amarjeet, who is now placed in an ICU. To receive treatment, Amarjeet needs to be sent to Bangalore. When the issue of money arises (since the Stent from the current treatment cost Rs 7 Lakhs), Harsh suggests borrowing money from his brother Shashi (Vikram Kapadia), which irks Sunita. Sunita is against borrowing money from Shashi and suggests breaking her FD instead. Sunita finds out that Harsh has broken her fixed deposit already to pay some bank loans, and feels cheated, as she had been saving the money to start her catering business. Sunita alleges that Harsh used the money to buy gifts for Anu. They get into an argument, which soon involves both Arjun and Rahul. When Arjun intervenes, Rahul belittles his presence, and they fight. Sunita takes Arjun out when he indicates that Rahul is a thief and that everything was not a coincidence. Sunita asks Arjun to keep quiet.
Amarjeet however does not want to go to Bangalore and has just two wishes. His first wish to be buried in an army burial with his old friends. His second wish is to take a family photo titled "Kapoor & Sons, since 1921" on his 90th birthday, which is coming in a week's time. Amarjeet shares with Rahul that he loves Mandakini from her waterfall scene in the movie "Ram Teri Ganga Maili". But it is Arjun who works on the idea with Wasim and makes a life-sized cutout of Mandakini from that scene.
Arjun is reunited with his old friend Wasim (Sukant Goel), who invites him to a party and there he meets Tia Malik (Alia Bhatt). At first sight, Arjun and Tia hit it off and party together. Harsh wants Rahul to make a property investment in Coonoor. He visits a few properties with a broker Mr Makhija (Chandrajit Ranavde). Rahul visits an old property which he wants to purchase to use as an art studio. The property happens to belong to Tia, inherited from her late parents. Tia finds Rahul attractive, and they later go out for dinner at a shady restaurant, where they have a good time and get drunk. Rahul drops Tia home and comes inside as the fuse of her home is malfunctioning. As Rahul fixes the fuse, he appears to be shocked as Tia spontaneously kisses him. Meanwhile, Rahul's manager keeps calling him for the completed novel.
Tia continues to spend time with Arjun. Tia reveals to Arjun that she lost her parents at the age of thirteen and lives alone. Arjun too reveals that Rahul's bestseller novel's idea was similar to his, but he never confronted his brother so as to not break the family apart. Later Tia confesses to liking Arjun but regrets involving herself with Rahul unnecessarily. Arjun's suitcase was lost by the airline and is delivered home when Arjun is away with Tia. Rahul opens up the suitcase and finds Arjun's almost completed novel draft in it.
Amarjeet is discharged and the Kapoor family throws a party to celebrate his birthday. Arjun invites Tia and discovers that she and Rahul already knew each other. Arjun fears that Rahul and Tia have something between them, but Rahul later clarifies that he is not interested in her as he is already in a committed relationship in London. As the brothers' bond, Rahul offers help to give feedback on Arjun's novel, but he says that he is not carrying his draft. As Arjun spends time with Tia, Rahul reads Arjun's draft in his absence.
The party goes on well, but problems arise when the family find out that Harsh has invited Anu (Anuradha Chandan), whom he had an affair with. Sunita acts out and a fight ensues between her and Harsh causing the party to end. Amarjeet brings the family together and takes a family photo of the four of them, temporarily uniting them. After the Kapoors have an extended family gathering, Harsh and Sunita reminisce on old times and how happy they were. Harsh gives his support to Sunita to start her business and apologizes for losing all their money.
The Kapoor family fulfill Amarjeet's wish to take a joint family photo, however secrets are revealed, and confrontations take place. Rahul finds his father's car outside Anu's house and realizes he is lying and has been seeing her for a year. Till now Rahul had always defended Harsh in front of Sunita, but now his confidence is broken. Sunita discovers photos on Rahul's computer revealing that he is a sexual deviant and the relationship in London is actually with another man. Tia tells Arjun what happened between her and Rahul, calling it a mistake. Arjun finds out Rahul has been reading his script, enraged he beats up Rahul and confronts him of stealing his first story. A shaken and upset Sunita then reveals to Arjun that she gave Rahul his story thinking Arjun had no interest in following up (Arjun left college in 6 months, then tried adventure sports, photography and even abandoned his novel). Harsh, who had left home in the heat of the moment, dies in a car accident. Rahul comes out of the closet with Arjun and both of them leave for London and New Jersey respectively.
After four months, the duo receives a video message from their Amarjeet, in which he requests them to come back as he is feeling alone. Sunita comes to terms with Rahul's homosexuality. The misunderstanding between Arjun and Tia is cleared up and they kiss. Amarjeet again wishes to take a family photo where they place a cutout of Harsh in his memory. They click their photo and Amarjeet's wish of a family picture is completed with the title, "Kapoor & Sons, since 1921".
