- Uhtred wins the protection of Alfred, but this newfound allegiance might also cost him his relationship with Brida. Meanwhile, Brida harbors a secret of her own.
- After his information has allowed the Saxons to defeat the Vikings in battle Uhtred wins the admiration of Alfred, who becomes king after the death of his brother Aethelred . Uhtred continues to gain Saxon respect as he agrees to train Alfred's warriors and to eventually assist in negotiating a peace treaty with the Danes. Not everybody is impressed by him however. Warrior Leofric is clearly resentful of his new found status whilst Brida sees him as collaborating with the enemy and points out that he could be facing Ragnar's son in battle.—don @ minifie-1
- Seeking to regain his Saxon inheritance as alderman of Bebbanburg, Uhtred offers his allegiance and military expertise in Danish warfare to Wessex, where king Aethelred dies and seeks to prevent his unworthy son Aethelwold to succeed to England's peril, so sickly genius brother Alfred is maneuvered into place, while the turncoat must wait in a dungeon. Uhtred's spy services allow Alfred's troops to crush Danish earl Guthrum's first incursion.
