- What starts out as a harmless online prank takes a dark turn for 17-year-old Avery Lindstrom (Anne Winters) when her best friends, Mandy Kim (Lauren Gaw) and Kaley Mack (Annalisa Cochrane), who create a fake profile for an international dating website and begin to communicate with a lonely, socially inept computer programmer named John Bennett (Travis Hammer).
Kaley callously refers John as a "total loser" before engaging in a relationship with him, eventually leading John to send her money so she could fly to the US to visit. When Avery confronts Kaley about taking the joke too far, she tries to justify her actions by saying that any man who would go to a mail order bride website was just looking for a sex slave and claimed that she was pranking John to teach him a lesson. Kaley and the girls then go to the airport to watch John's heartbroken reaction to his "girlfriend" not showing up, while forcing Mandy to tape the event after Avery had already stormed out in disgust.
Having lived a life of isolation and bullying, John becomes consumed by his desire for revenge after learning he was catfished by the girls. Doing some digging online, John finds that the photo of his nonexistent "girlfriend" was actually that of a deceased Filipina model, then uncovers the identities of the three girls who played him like a fool on their blog with their cruel prank. While both Avery and Mandy feel bad for what they did to him and show some remorse, Kaley doesn't, being the "mean girl" of their school.
John decides to get back at the girls by hiring a good-looking guy about their age name Nick (Randy Blekitas). Nick is a male prostitute, and John tells him he is playing a trick on his niece, and wants him to get the three girls to fall for him and then stand them up. John finds their hangout, the Skatelab skate park, and sends Nick there to flirt with them. The plan works well, as both Kaley and Mandy express interest and give him their phone numbers.
Nick tells the girls he had just moved from Pittsburgh, and they invite him to a party that Avery is throwing. Though he fails to show, Nick then sends a text message inviting Kaley and Mandy to Skatelab (which was actually sent by John), and when they arrive, it seems as though no one is there. John kidnaps Mandy outside the hangout first, which Kaley initially thinks is a practical joke being pulled by Mandy or Avery. Kaley returns to the party and plays a practical joke on Avery's crush Trevor, pouring water on the crotch of his pants, then posts a video of the prank on their blog. At this point, Avery who has had enough of Kaley and after a brief argument ends their friendship. During this time, John who has taken Mandy to a secluded building, interrogates her and she tells him that Kaley was the one that came up with the prank that they pulled on him. Hearing this, John decides to go after Kaley next.
Upon returning home, Kaley turns on the TV, but John uses his computer hacking skills to scare her by turning off the security system and the lights in Kaley's home. Having succeeded in panicking her, he then enters the house and kidnaps Kaley at gunpoint, taking her to the warehouse where he is holding Mandy hostage. After they reunite Mandy blames Kaley for their current predicament, leaving both of them scared and silent.
The next day, Avery is being interviewed by a police detective, as the parents of Kaley and Mandy are looking for their daughters. Avery tells the agent about Nick, and the cops mark him as a suspect. Nick speaks to the cop, and straightens everything out by telling her about John and how he was unaware about what he was doing as he believed it was just a harmless prank.
Later that day, Avery is also kidnapped by John, and having now captured all three girls, he talks to them about what they had done to him. Avery remaining calm tries to calm John down, telling him that they believed it was just a harmless prank. However, John states that they don't understand pain but they will soon enough.
John decides to take the three girls and sell them to a man he found online. The man over the phone says that he will sell the girls for human trafficking. However, John gets scammed by the man, who threatens him at gunpoint to give him the other two girls. But a truck drives up, and startled by this the man and his companion drive off with Kaley.
At the same time, John takes Mandy and Avery back to the warehouse, Avery deduces that the men were sex traffickers. Avery comes up with a plan and slashes John with a piece of glass and tries to escape, but is unsuccessful. Upon returning home to tend to his injuries, John's hooker neighbor offers to find him someone else to sell the girls to, and the pair return to the warehouse. However, instead of aiding John in his trafficking attempt, the neighbor shoots him in the arm, allowing Mandy and Avery to escape. John then retaliates by shooting his neighbor in the chest and tries to find and recapture the girls, but is unable to due to his injuries, while the girls hide in the warehouse, armed with the neighbor's gun and a cell phone.
They manage to call the police and manage to escape outside, where they meet a cop who managed to find their location. At almost the same time, a defeated John commits suicide in despair before he can be arrested. Avery is shown in the hospital, being questioned by the female cop who had been looking for her and her two friends. Before she can be questioned further, Avery's mom arrives and they hug relieved to see each other.
In the final scenes, Avery's voice-over explains that it has been 7 months since the whole ordeal. Despite the efforts of the police and Kaley's mother, Kaley was never found and is still missing to this day. Avery is shown emptying Kaley's locker which was turned into a memorial for her by the other students. Avery narrates how John had been in so much pain that he took things to the extreme, but in doing so he had made a name for himself, suddenly everybody knew who he was. Avery also mentions how the police had covered up the true details of how they met John, most likely to protect them. As Avery leaves school, she mentions how being mean to someone can have such dire consequences. Just because you can be mean to someone, doesn't mean you should be. Take Kaley for example: if she had not did what she did, she would still be here.
