“Immense gratitude to everyone who is involved in this dynamic, vibrant inclusive festival, where everyone is not only welcomed, but embraced,” Roberts told the Rockie Awards gala. “Diversity is being on the team, inclusion is getting in the game. I’m so grateful to A&e to allow me to be in the game, with you,” Roberts, who went from star athlete to becoming a TV anchor, added about A&e, the sponsor of the gala award.

Dr. Death, move over; there's a new doctor aboard: Dr. Odyssey.
Dr. Odyssey, a new series just greenlit by ABC from prolific and talented producer Ryan Murphy, who has marked his return to 20th Television, under the Disney umbrella.
We don't know what exactly Dr. Odyssey is about, but we do know that Joshua Jackson is set to take on the lead role.
The Dawson's Creek star joins this assumed medical procedural as the title character, whose charming personality and wit help him get what he wants.
That's all we know of the character so far, as no additional details will be released, as is typical for a Ryan Murphy series.

How distraught is Annette, the severely troubled British mother of two played by Daisy Ridley in “Magpie?” She has gotten a short angular haircut, one that might, in another context, be the height of chic (very Isabella Rossellini). Except that the movie uses it as a symbolic expression of her trauma, like Mia Farrow’s iconic Vidal Sassoon cut in “Rosemary’s Baby.” Annette, who’s on some serious medication, looks at a mirror until it breaks. Does she have telekinetic powers? No, she broke it with her hand (which bleeds into the sink), but the force of her repressed rage is palpable. Ben (Shazad Latif), her British Indian husband, is a noted author, and every comment she makes about his work is a sly dig. She speaks in brief, clipped “civilized” phrases. At one point a bird crashes into the window of her home. The whole atmosphere of the film...

‘Mea Culpa’ Review: Tyler Perry’s 1980s-Style Erotic Thriller Serves Up Guilty Pleasures to His Fans
Within his deal at Netflix, Tyler Perry has found room to flex his narrative muscles, mixing his familiar brand of comedy and melodrama with other genres. “A Jazzman’s Blues” applied Perry’s usual formula to a 1930s period setting. Before that, his first film for the streamer, “A Fall from Grace,” found him trying his hand at a legal thriller. Now, with “Mea Culpa,” the prolific writer-director pushes that genre further, making a loopy 1980s-style erotic thriller with a distinctly Tyler Perry flair. The plot skews close to “Jagged Edge” with a lawyer falling for her client, a man accused of murdering his partner, while referencing another famous ’80s staple, “Fatal Attraction,” via a love nest accessed only by freight elevator.
The lawyer in this scenario is Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), and her possibly guilty client is artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), who’s accused of murdering his girlfriend.

Naked Attraction has surged to capture the top spot on Max streaming service’s “Most Popular” series list a week after its U.S. release.
That’s pretty impressive for a 7-year-old British reality show that was added to Max with zero fanfare on Sept. 20. Media coverage and online chatter surged following a Hollywood Reporter story over the weekend pointing out that the controversial series had been added to the service. Max’s Top 10 is based on the number of unique accounts viewing relatively recently added content (so legacy titles like The Sopranos are not included). The show’s official ratings from Nielsen won’t be available for weeks.
The dating series features singles who judge and eliminate nude prospective dates. The show features close-up, full-frontal nudity and plenty of graphic discussion, though no sex is shown.

Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav may well have had a big part in crafting the tentative agreement between striking writers and Hollywood studios over the weekend, but on the heels of that triumph, Wbd looks to be mired in a much different type of controversy.
The Hollywood Reporter is outlining that controversy, as Wbd is drawing criticism for the importation of a British reality dating series called “Naked Attraction” to its streamer Max. The show features full frontal nudity in each episode, and that has drawn the attention of conservative parents groups.

We are in a remarkable (and terrifying) era of unconventional dating shows that push the boundaries of what entertainment can be. From Love is Blind and FBoy Island to Milf Manor, the spins on reality dating are countless these days. However, the United Kingdom’s Naked Attraction cuts right down to the chase, introducing participants in full frontal nudity. Since 2016, it has been broadcast on Britain’s Channel 4, and now it has quietly made its way onto the streaming platform Max. The episodes available on Max remain uncensored, but now they include a warning at the start of each one: “The following series is intended exclusively for mature audiences. It features full frontal nudity, strong language, and explicit discussions about the human body. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.” In every episode, a “chooser” assesses and eliminates six prospective dates who stand on a stage, their fully exposed bodies gradually...

For the first time since beginning this editorial series, we’re discussing a documentary rather than a fiction film. That’s because Yellow Veil just released a supersized documentary about the history of the Erotic Thriller called We Kill For Love: The Lost World of the Erotic Thriller (2023).
Clocking in at 163 minutes, this is a thorough, occasionally indulgent documentary written and directed by Anthony Penta. The doc uses a framing device featuring an archivist character, played by Michael Reed, cataloguing countless VHS tapes and watching “Suspect Interviews” (aka talking head interviews) in his dimly lit office. These segments recur throughout We Kill For Love, and also feature voice-over narration from Penta that are partially purple prose, partially quotations from academic articles and books on the genre.
The vast majority of the documentary, however, is taken up by clips and talking head interviews. There’s a good variety of interviewees, including scholars such Linda Ruth Williams,...

Nina Ruscio remembers seeing the blockbuster psychosexual thriller “Fatal Attraction” when it was released in 1987 and the controversy that followed it, the “deep psychic weight” and “issues of misogyny and mental health” that surrounded the hit about marriage and infidelity that starred Michael Douglas, Glenn Close and Anne Archer. “It crossed a lot of the wires of psychic intensity at the time,” she recalls. So when the opportunity arose for Ruscio to serve as the production designer on the new eight-part “Fatal Attraction” reboot for Paramount+, she knew that if she signed on, there was some risk she’d find herself in the middle of a new firestorm. But she trusted her instincts in saying yes.

[This story contains spoilers to the first three episodes of Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction.]
Glenn Close has made her thoughts on Fatal Attraction known in the conversation around the legacy of the iconic 1987 film that co-starred herself and Michael Douglas.
Reading about Close’s character work, the original (and then retooled) ending to the erotic thriller and Close’s wishes that the Oscar-nominated film had explored more of Alex Forrest’s mental illness, instead of labeling her with extreme villainy, are all partly what inspired Alexandra Cunningham to agree to adapt the movie into the Fatal Attraction limited series that has now begun streaming on Paramount+.
“[Close has] always said that if anyone was going to do [a remake], that she hoped someone would dig deeper into Alex’s point of view and her motivations,” Cunningham told The Hollywood Reporter (in an interview that took place before the Writers Guild of America went on strike).

Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction series shows us the first embers of an illicit affair… but it also shows us the damage it can cause once it catches fire.
Sunday’s premiere opens with former lawyer Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson) sporting a scraggly beard and facing a parole board after spending 15 years in prison for second-degree murder. He shares his deep remorse for killing a woman named Alex Forrest: “I chose to lose control. I chose to take her life.” All he wants is to be able to reconnect with his family — and his daughter Ellen (Alyssa Jirrels) is in the room watching.

“Fatal Attraction” is a story about hubris. Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson), a high-powered LA County prosecutor, lives a life of means. He’s inherited the de facto family business, he has a loving wife and daughter, and he can escape precarious legal situations with a well-placed phone call or two. Then, a woman enters his life who he can’t ignore: Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan), a member of the Victim Services team who ends up in the same courthouse hallways Dan patrols on a daily basis.
You don’t need to have seen a single movie from the 1980s to know that “Fatal Attraction” is also the story of an affair, one that plays out roughly the way it does in the film on which the Paramount+ series is based. Innocent-enough interactions quickly add up to Dan and Alex in bed together. Dan tries to end things and pretend their romantic few days never happened.

Fatal Attraction was a huge box office hit back in 1987, but it didn’t age all that well, with Glenn Close’s spurned mistress turning into a crazed horror movie villain intent on hacking her former lover to bits. Paramount+’s new series adaptation — debuting this Sunday; I’ve seen the first four episodes — aims to right that wrong by reexamining the central affair through modern eyes and showing us there’s more to the story. It’s an intriguing idea, but unfortunately, the misguided revamp only manages to lose what made this story exciting in the first place. The...

Joshua Jackson has come a long way since The Mighty Ducks and Dawson’s Creek. The former Pacey now finds himself in a predicament as he has a torrid affair as Dan Gallagher with Lizzy Caplan’s Alex Forrest in the new Paramount Plus adaptation of Fatal Attraction. Entertainment Weekly got to sit down with Jackson as he talked about how the show differs from the movie and how they had discussed the nature of Dan and Alex’s tryst and why he isn’t just the victim in this interpretation.
Jackson tells Entertainment Weekly, “My only nervousness about it was that everybody has an opinion about what Fatal Attraction is.” Jackson explains how the showrunner, Alexandra Cunningham sold him on the show, “I liked her desire to tell a story that uses the benefit of TV and the amount of time that you have to really get into the characters,...

Lizzy Caplan (“Castle Rock”) is starring as female lead Alex Forrest in the upcoming Paramount+ reboot series, with Joshua Jackson (“Dr. Death”) playing Dan Gallagher.
Watch the official teaser trailer for the “Fatal Attraction” series below.
“In the film, Alex is the villain of the story, and Dan is the hero and there is no gray area,” Caplan told Entertainment Weekly in a recent preview piece. “Now, audiences have changed so much, we are no longer primed to believe in this villainous woman story. She’s clearly mentally ill and that’s not something that is really touched upon at all in the movie.”

Actor Michael Douglas added to his cinematic legacy by starring in the 1992 mega-hit Basic Instinct. But Douglas didn’t do the role simply because he enjoyed the script.
Rather, he felt Basic Instinct was the ideal film to do at a time when he felt people were becoming too conservative.
Michael Douglas’ interest in gender wars once played a part in his film roles Michael Douglas | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
The role Douglas played in Basic Instinct was somewhat familiar territory for the actor. Douglas saw himself starring in films where women took control and power away from men in various ways. Apart from Basic Instinct, he’d also done Fatal Attraction and Disclosure, which sometimes put Douglas at the mercy of his female co-stars.
This wasn’t entirely coincidental on Douglas’ part. In a 1994 interview with The Morning Call, Douglas was intrigued by the shifting gender roles in real-life and the film industry.

Paramount+ has given a formal series order to Fatal Attraction, with Lizzy Caplan set as the female lead, Alex, in the reimagining of the classic 1980s psychosexual thriller film in which Alex was played by Glenn Close.
Written by Alexandra Cunningham (Dirty John) from a story she co-wrote with Kevin J. Hynes, the series explores the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women, personality disorders and coercive control.
Caplan plays Alex, who becomes obsessed with her lover after a brief affair. The male lead role of the lover, Dan, played by Michael Douglas in the movie, is currently being cast.

This is an interesting question since it’s not too far off the mark these days to wonder how a Fatal Attraction reboot might actually look. One can definitely assume that discussion about mental health would be a big part of the movie, and it does feel accurate to say that Dan would either be looked at as the scum of the earth for cheating or that he’d be made to grovel even more and possibly still lose everything. It might even be that the movie might see a race swap, but then again we’ve seen a lot of movies that

With over 250 screen adaptations featuring Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the most famous characters to have graced a screen. But few of those adaptations have come from non-English speaking countries.

Film posters are often the first piece of movie iconography to draw us into a new world. They are symbols of a new adventure, a promise to eager film fans that something exciting is coming. Whether they are blu-tacked to bedroom walls or plastered hundreds of feet high in Leicester Square, these images have the power to enthral and entice.
The very best of these posters become emblems, the film that exist to promote emboldened by their imagery. Whether you love the minimalist symbolism of Saul Bass, or the warm, detailed glow of Drew Struzan, or more recently the master of negative space Olly Moss, these posters are works of art in their own right, the artists who create them legends in their own lifetimes.

Obsession is the marrow of erotic thrillers, from the sublime (“Fatal Attraction”) to the ridiculous (“Obsessed”), the hey-not-so-bad (“Sleeping with the Enemy”) to the very-bad-indeed (“The Boy Next Door”), to the auteur-crafted (Tyler Perry’s “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”) to the Netflix-knockoff (“Fatal Affair”). This sub-genre is so abundant that in “Fatale,” its latest victim (an appropriately jittery Michael Ealy) once played the unhinged baddie in another film about physical intimacy gone very much awry (“The Perfect Guy”).
That said, despite the ample availability of films that are built on the concept of “guilty pleasures” and delight in unspooling wacky-crazy, sex-mad, unhinged freakfests, the telling of their stories can contain all the freshness of data entry. While cinemas worldwide have spent the better part of this year shuttered or operating at limited capacity, few film industries have felt the pain quite like Russia’s, which generates roughly 80% of its revenues from theatrical receipts, according to Evgenia Markova, head of the Russian film promotion body Roskino.
But while local profits have plummeted, Russian producers continue to find growing interest from foreign buyers, with Markova pointing to strong sales at Mipcom and at the Key Buyers Event, a virtual showcase for domestic productions that took place this summer.
“The Russian industry has learned to adapt to all the new circumstances,” she says. “It became more flexible, and more responsive to the needs of the global market.” A number of high-profile Russian projects will be introduced to foreign buyers during AFM, beginning with “Major Grom and the Plague Doctor,” a big-screen adaptation of the hit comic-book franchise from Bubble Comics.
