Ashley 'Ash' J. Williams: Wow. Last time I was here with a girl, I was hopin' to get laid. Didn't quite work out that way. I cut my hand off with a chainsaw, though. It was a fun weekend.

"I hope they don't die." "They're okay. They have pepper spray."
The eighth episode in this sadly short lived series packs a pretty hard punch, as it gets right down to business. Ash and company arrive at the isolated cabin (and work shed) where the whole sordid affair began many years ago. Ash had tried to go it alone, not wanting to get anybody else killed, but Amanda tracks him down. He ventures out to the work shed, to prepare, while she remains inside.
It's all about the thick and heavy atmosphere in 'Ashes to Ashes'. You really feel a sense of dread as the final showdown of this first season is almost underway. This episode has some great splatter and effects gags, but the "fun factor" is downplayed for some dead-serious moments. That's not to say that there is no humour: Pablo and Kelly encounter a trio of hikers in the woods. (Naturally, the audience is likely hoping that these incidental characters move on, knowing that would be the wise thing for them to do.) There are also surprises in store for the characters and the viewers alike, but they won't be spoiled here.
The scenario allows for some real poignancy, and ends on a cliffhanger. Both Bruce Campbell and Jill Marie Jones are wonderful, but Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo are seen only briefly. Lucy Lawless (a.k.a. Ruby Knowby) doesn't turn up at all.
The way that 'Ashes to Ashes' ends will have one eager to move on to the next episode.
Eight out of 10.
