What’s cheering about this lot, apart from the fact that as comedies, they should all technically cheer us up, is how different they are. The BBC first announced it was making six-part comedy thriller Black Ops back in June 2021 – and boy is it worth the wait.
Created by Famalam’s BAFTA-winning duo of Gbemisola Ikumelo and Akemnji Ndifornyen, it follows two inexperienced Community Support Officers – Ikumelo plays Dom alongside The Wheel of Time’s Hammed Animashaun as Kay – who get recruited into a perilous undercover Met Police operation infiltrating a London drug gang.
There are so many elements that combine to make Black Ops a joyous must-watch:
1. You’ll Instantly Love The Characters
The sibling-like partnership between Dom and Kay makes us feel immediately at ease in their world. So when the enigmatic Di Clinton Blair covertly approaches them to join his “off the books” undercover operation in episode one, we’re invested in their story from the off.
Dom is smart, quick-thinking but also ultimately immature and quite spoiled – she lives at home...

42 has made a big name hire. Former Netflix and Tiger Aspect Productions exec Ben Cavey is joining as Head of Comedy and Entertainment.
Cavey will be based in the UK- and U.S.-based firm’s LA office, growing its expanding group of managers and producers on the West Coast.
He’ll focus on expanding 42’s push into comedy and entertainment, producing projects and managing talent in scripted and unscripted TV and film. Cavey will also develop projects under 42’s three-way production venture with management and production company 3 Arts Entertainment and Lionsgate Television, which includes a first-look deal with Lionsgate Television for the U.S. market.
Last year, we revealed Lionsgate had taken a stake in 42 in a deal, in the process forming the three-way Jv also including Lionsgate subsidiary 3 Arts.
Cavey has just finished executive producing a special and season four of Jack Whitehall comedy Bad Education for the BBC.

Netflix’s new comedy series “Murderville” has an inherently funny premise – the show stars Will Arnett as a detective, and in each episode a different special guest star plays his new partner. Except while Arnett and his co-stars have the outline of a script, the guest star walks onto set with no script, and has to improvise their way through the investigation until, at the end of the episode, they have to determine who they think committed that episode’s murder.
But how, exactly, does this work? Is it all really improvised? How long does each episode take to shoot? All good questions with fascinating answers, it turns out.
TheWrap recently spoke with “Murderville” showrunner Krister Johnson about the series, and he answered all of our burning questions.

Every episode of “Murderville” is essentially like a murder mystery dinner party, except there’s only one person actually playing. Based on the BBC3 series “Murder in Successville,” the new Netflix comedy throws celebrity guests headlong into solving cases alongside loose cannon detective Terry Seattle, played by Will Arnett. Everyone besides the new “trainee” — including Haneefah Wood as Terry’s boss slash ex-wife and Lilan Bowden as the precinct’s forensics expert — is following a punny script that gently prods them toward the real identity of the murderer. With only 30 minutes to get through all the clues, three different suspects, and at least one undercover mission, “Murderville” doesn’t exactly try too hard to stump its guests, let alone its audience. Every suspect is extremely happy to chat about how much they hated the victim while surrounded by clues so obviously damning they might as well have glowing arrows pointing at them.

Globalisation isn’t just about lax child labour laws lowering the price of t-shirts; it also has its downsides. Global markets have a tendency to replace local idiosyncrasy with the accessibly bland. Should, for instance, the makers of Sweden’s chocolate Plopp Bar ever branch out into English-speaking territories, they’d be forced to rename their product to something much less funny, and we’d all be the worse off for it.
Murderville, a US series based on BBC Three’s Murder in Successville, is worse off for just that reason. In the transatlantic translation of the semi-improvised detective comedy, a niche element has been dropped, and with it, much of the original’s charm. Here’s the premise: every episode, a celebrity guest is thrown amongst a regular cast of comedy actors to solve a murder alongside the lead detective. There’s a part-script for everybody but the celebrity,...

February is the shortest month of the year but that doesn’t mean it has to be any less filled with enticing film and TV options than any other month. That’s certainly true of this February, which begins and ends with a pair of ripped-from-the-headlines miniseries, beginning with the inside story of an infamous sex tape and ending with a boardroom drama from the ride share world.

Netflix has released the first trailer for “Murderville,” the new crime comedy series starring Will Arnett.
The series is adapted from the BAFTA award-winning BBC3 series “Murder in Successville,” which was created by Andy Brereton and Avril Spary. Arnett stars as Terry Seattle, a senior homicide detective who is paired with a different celebrity guest star to solve a murder case in every episode. The show’s twist is that the guest stars aren’t given a script, forcing them to improvise their way through the case and ultimately guess who the killer is at the end of the episode.
The trailer shows Arnett’s Seattle interacting with his guest stars, coaching them along as new developments in the absurd cases reveal themselves.
“You’re supposed to gasp,” Seattle deadpans to guest star Kumail Nanjiani after an officer declares there’s been a murder. “Weird gasp,” he mutters when Nanjiani follows his instructions.

2020 in British TV comedy brought us Maisie Williams as a kickass survivalist in a pickle, and a new parenting comedy from the hugely talented Simon Blackwell and Chris Addison starring Martin Freeman.

Here’s the skinny on all those new shows and more. Here’s what arrived in 2019, and here are the new British TV dramas that arrived in 2020.

If you thought you were safe in the hands of Superman, Thor or even James Bond – think again. The latest and bravest superhero arrives in the (very) unlikely form of Logan, an MI6 agent who specialises in comical endeavours and collateral damage in the new ITV2 series Action Team… Played by the Very funny Tom Davis (Plebs, The Keith Lemon Show, Murder in Successville), Logan leads a top-secret team of special agents working for the British government – charged with saving the world in this spoof spy action-thriller series, Action Team. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you won’t believe what you’ve seen.
Think The Bourne Identity meets The Naked Gun.

Is there life left in the action comedy spoof? Matt sees how ITV2's Action Team, starting tonight, measures up...
For almost as long as action heroes have donned vests and duffed up scheming evil doers, there have been comedians sending them up for it. From The Naked Gun to Hot Fuzz, action films have served as the inspiration behind some of the cinemas funniest comedies.

There’s something inherently ridiculous about action films. Elevating masculinity and chaotic violence to obscene levels all while keeping a straight face is silly. How many times have we seen a hyper-muscled, wise-cracking tough nut, covered in grease and without a shirt, grappling with any man who gets in his way? Take the third Rambo film, a movie full of ultra-violence courtesy of the outrageous arsenal of its lone wolf protagonist, and one that demands to be made fun of.

The trio are launching a brand-new production company called Shiny Button, which will develop and produce original content across both television and feature films.
Brereton, De frond and Davis told Screen that one of the projects they are developing is a film incarnation of Murder In Succesville.

Prevenge is the brilliant and off-the-wall writing and directing debut feature by Alice Lowe (Sightseers). She wrote, starred in, and directed it whilst 7-8 months pregnant with her first child, who also appears in the film. Alice was one of the Bifa nominees for ‘best debut director’.
Known for her work as a UK television comedy actress, Alice Lowe made her move into film with her screenwriting debut Sightseers, directed by Ben Wheatley, in which she also starred as the hapless Tina. After premiering at Cannes, Sightseers went on to receive several accolades, Empire’s Best British Film, as well as acting and screenplay awards for Alice.
Official synopsis:
A pitch black, wryly British comedy, Prevenge follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree that’s as funny as it is vicious. It’s her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth’s actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father.

Murder in Successville is coming back for a second series.
Tom Davis will return as the imposing Di Sleet in new episodes of the bonkers but brilliant comedy.
The series casts celebrities - including, in the first series, Dermot O'Leary, Deborah Meaden and Made in Chelsea's Jamie Laing - as detectives.
The hapless celebs must team with the unhinged Sleet to solve a killing in 'glitzy' Successville, with surreal results.
"I'm over the moon to be heading back to Successville and I would like to thank the BBC for embracing the madness of the show," Davis said. "We have loads more mad places to go and I can't wait to see who we are taking there."
BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh added: "BBC Three will always be home to the best British creative ideas and talent, and Murder in Successville is no exception.
