During a competitive period when well-reviewed wide releases like “Dunkirk” and “Baby Driver” are luring adult audiences away from new smart-house fare, Weinstein stormed back at the specialty box office with Taylor Sheridan’s Wyoming western “Wind River,” which boasted one of the best limited openings of the year. A strong debut will help it stand out in the weeks ahead as the flow of new films declines.
Fox Searchlight welcomed a decent initial response for its heart-tugging inner-city dance documentary “Step” in seven cities. Also impressive is the two-theater launch for “Columbus,” starring Jon Cho as a Korean translator spending time in middle America due to a family emergency.

Sony's The Dark Tower topped the softest weekend at the domestic box office since early April, opening with less than $20 million. Among other new releases, Aviron's Kidnap had a modest showing, squeaking above $10 million, while Annapurna's Detroit was unable to take off in its nationwide expansion. Overall, with the top twelve films grossing $111.5 million makes this the lowest grossing weekend of the summer season and sixth lowest of the year as the 2017 summer movie season is currently down ~10% compared to 2016. At #1, Sony's release of The Dark Tower, a long-awaited adaptation of the Stephen King sci-fi/fantasy series, delivered an estimated $19.5 million from 3,451 locations. It's a disappointing debut for the $60 million production, which is expected to kick-off a multi-platform franchise with co-financier Mrc currently developing a television series. That being said, this is the second largest opening weekend ever for a King adaptation, behind the $20.6 million debut for 2007's 1408, which went...

[Warning: The following contains spoilers for Brave New Jersey.]
In 1938 when Orson Welles presented a radio broadcast of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds, a number of people who heard the tale believed the alien invasion at the center of the story was actually happening.
The new indie comedy Brave New Jersey centers on a small town whose residents were fooled by the broadcast and respond to the fear of imminent danger by reevaluating their life choices.

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Adaptation (Spike Jonze)
It’s almost depressing to rewatch Adaptation in 2016, because it’s a reminder of how strong an actor Nicolas Cage is when he actually invests himself in good projects. It was soon after this that his career went off the rails, but he’s remarkably impressive here, playing the dual roles of Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, Donald. As much a mind-fuck as any other Kaufman screenplay,...

The widespread panic that reportedly ensued in response to Orson Welles’ Oct. 30, 1938, Mercury Theater radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds would seem to be promising material for a screen comedy. Unfortunately, director/co-screenwriter Jody Lambert’s Brave New Jersey squanders its inspiration. Depicting the reactions of a group of small-town residents for whom the event becomes a life-altering experience, the film wastes several talented performers with its low-key, rambling humor and one-dimensional characters.

Making the headlines in 1938
What would you do if you thought aliens were landing near your home, your neighbours shared your concerns and you had no convenient means of summoning outside help? On the 30th of October, 1938, that's exactly what some Americans went through due to confusion over Orson Welles' radio adaptation of Hg Wells' science fiction classic War Of The Worlds. Brave New Jersey is a new film from director Jody Lambert which explores the reactions of people in a small town on that strangest of nights.
Although it's played as a comedy, Brave New Jersey never mocks its characters or treats them as stupid. I congratulated Jody on the dignity he managed to give them.
Small town blues

Long before Tom Cruise fended off extraterrestrial tripod fighting machines in 2005's War of the Worlds, there was Orson Welles' original radio drama, which was broadcast in 1938 and caused the world to falsely believe there was an impending alien invasion.
Brave New Jersey is about that very night in the small town of Lullaby, and, in this exclusive clip, Pitch Perfect 3 star Anna Camp plays Peg Prickett, a schoolteacher who is ready to stay and fight during an attack from Mars, which does not go over well with her tough-talking fiancé.

The comedy is being billed as "the original Fake News story" about an alien invasion where the aliens never show up. It comes from director Jody Lambert (Chris Pine's People Like Us) and co-stars Veep's Tony Hale and Parenthood's Sam Jaeger.

Tony Hale tries to maintain control over a chaotic town meeting after hearing the "news" of a local alien attack in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive clip of Brave New Jersey.
Directed by Jody Lambert from a script co-written with Michael Dowling, the comedy — also starring Anna Camp, Sam Jaeger and Heather Burns — is an adaptation of Orson Welles’ legendary 1938 War of the Worlds radio broadcast and the consequential panic that ensued across America when millions believed aliens were invading Earth. The first trailer has landed for Brave New Jersey, the cheekily-titled comedy that finds Arrested Development and Veep star Tony Hale as Clark Hill, one of many who experienced the now-legendary day where Orson Welles’ broadcast War of the Worlds over radio waves in 1938 and started a hysteria of massive proportions. Helmed by first time director Jody Lambert (who penned People Like Us), Brave New Jersey seems to be about the lies we believe, and the fun you might end up having along the way.
We said in our review, “Part of the pleasure is the film’s superb production design by Chloe Arbiture and art direction by Jonathan Bell, who have crafted an authentic and clean pre-World War II look that is a simple yet gorgeous. It was the original Fake News story.
In a small New Jersey town on the night of Orson Welles’s legendary 1938 “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast, the hoax that terrified millions into believing Martians were invading America, citizens face what they think is their last night on Earth.
Here’s a look at the upcoming film Brave New Jersey where the aliens never show up.
The over-worked town’s mayor Clark (Tony Hale, “Veep”) will take a chance on love. The neglected housewife, Lorraine (Heather Burns, “Manchester By The Sea”) will break free from her big-cheese husband (Sam Jaeger, “Parenthood”). The demure schoolteacher Peg (Anna Camp, “Pitch Perfect”) will become a warrior. The aimless reverend (Dan Bakkedahl, “Life in Pieces”) will rediscover his faith. The scared Sheriff (Mel Rodriguez, “The Last Man on Earth”) will find his courage. And the reclusive war veteran (Raymond J. Barry, “Training Day”) will...

"So, what are we supposed to do now?" Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie comedy titled Brave New Jersey, from filmmaker Jody Lambert. The film tells the true story of a small town in New Jersey that freaked out during Orson Welles' legendary 1938 "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast, believing it was real. They decided to make this a comedy, which may work better in the end since playing this serious would be a whole other thing. Brave New Jersey features an ensemble cast including Tony Hale, Heather Burns, Anna Camp, Sam Jaeger, Raymond J. Barry, Dan Bakkedahl, Mel Rodriguez, Grace Kaufman, Matt Oberg, and Erika Alexander. This looks totally goofy but still heartfelt and fun. Enjoy. Welcome to Lullaby, NJ, population 506, the fictional town at the center of Jody Lambert’s delightful comedy Brave New Jersey “where strangers are friends and no one is a stranger.” Home of the Rotolactor, a robotic milking machine, the central New Jersey town is only a few hours from Grover’s Mills, the “epicenter” of the great October 1938 martian invasion chronicled in Orson Welles’ legendary War of the Worlds broadcast. Depicting this evening of misconstrued alien invasion, Lambert’s comedy is far more modest affair than the Tom Cruise film as Lullaby comes together for the biggest night in its history.
Reluctantly led by mayor Clark Hill (a restrained Tony Hale) who cautions against panic, he’s overruled by old Captain Collins (Raymond J. Barry), who is quick to formulate a plan based on his time in War War I. The do-or-die night also gives characters a chance at reflecting on their own lives,...

Tony Hale is best known for playing Gary Walsh, Selina Meyer's inoffensive, bag-handling yes-man on HBO's Veep – but in real life, the comic actor isn't afraid to speak up about what grinds his gears. Rolling Stone asked Hale to vent about three things that piss him off in the latest installment of our ongoing video series.
First up on his list is "mean people," and the explanation is simple: "That sounds kind of contradictory, like I'm not liking mean people. But I don't understand mean people. Just be nice!" Hale...

Coming off the barnstorming success of Pitch Perfect 2 – $287.5 million worldwide after enjoying the highest-grossing opening for any musical comedy in history – all signs pointed to Universal reuniting the Barden Bellas for a third movie without so much as a hitch. Alas, that proved to be wishful thinking.
Soon after the studio issued the go-ahead on Pitch Perfect 3 and the pieces started to fall into place, it was revealed that Elizabeth Banks planned to vacate the director’s chair due to family matters and other commitments, while still remaining on board as Gail, one part of the irreverent commentating team opposite John Michael Higgins. As time wore on, Universal finally zeroed in on Banks’ replacement: Trish Sie, the filmmaker who has a decorated history in the music industry, most recently shooting the music video for Ok Go’s “Upside Down & Inside Out” in zero gravity.

On October 30, 1938 a radio drama show called The Mercury Theatre on the Air put on a very special Halloween episode. Directed and narrated by Orson Welles, it was a radio play retelling of The War of the Worlds, H.G. Wells' iconic sci-fi novel about Martians in great big spaceships invading Earth. The world was a far less interconnected place back then and, understandably, some listeners around America freaked out, sincerely believing that the broadcast was depicting real events and aliens had indeed come to our galactic shores. That broadcast has taken on an almost urban legend status over the decades, and the new movie Brave New Jersey, starring Anna Camp, Tony Hale, Sam Jaegar, Mel Rodriguez and a whole lot more, takes a fictional look at a night that was...
