The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Bill Hader returns for one final season of Barry and the popular sketch comedy A Black Lady Sketch Show kicks off its fourth season on HBO Max in April 2023. Additional highlights of the streaming service’s April lineup include the debut of Love & Death, a limited series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Patrick Fugit; season two of Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett; and the return of 100 Foot Wave for a second season.
In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. HBO Max offers this description of the fourth and final season’s remaining episodes: “The Titans – with the exception of Gar – are returned to the Temple of Trigon and rush to find Sebastian and Mother Mayhem before Sebastian summons Trigon. Along the way, they come across a prophecy that may require Kory to make a huge sacrifice to save the world.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.
Watch the “Barry” season 4 trailer:
Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. Candy picks up an ax, whacks her rival over 40 times, and then claims self-defense. The new...

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Abbi Jacobson (Broad City) co-created the show and will star as catcher Carson Shaw.
Other Prime Video Originals of note this month include season 2 of British comedy The Outlaws on and the Ron Howard-directed Thirteen Lives,...

Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

Pantaleon’s animated film Un Rescate De Huevitos (An Egg Rescue) is a rarity in the specialty box office as a Spanish language animated film. And its opening weekend success will certainly come as no surprise in Mexico where the franchise is its highest-grossing film series to date.
The Spanish-language animation performed tremendously at its 320 locations, averaging over $1,300 per screen—a solid achievement for an animated kids flick. With Sunday’s numbers in, the Alatriste brothers-directed film will have grossed $430K in its opening weekend. Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and Austin areas were Rescate’s best markets.
Un Rescate De Huevitos is a sequel to 2015’s Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos (A Rooster With Many Eggs) and the fourth film in the Huevos franchise overall. The latest tale follows a rooster named Toto (Bruno Bichir) who goes on a rescue mission to free his egg children Max and Uly...

Top bass at Mexican film institute Imcine and the Canadian Media Producers Association remain upbeat about Us ties in light of threats by Donald Trump to tear up Nafta.
Despite the Us president-elect’s campaign tirades against Nafta (The North American Free Trade Agreement) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership – he has not elaborated on these remarks since he won the election on November 8 – entertainment business and political leaders from the powerful neighbours either side of the Us remain upbeat.
Imcine director general Jorge Sánchez (pictured) said even if Trump were to abandon or modify the trilateral Nafta in a material way, it would not have a substantial impact on cross-border productions and collaborations between singatories Mexico, Canada and the Us.
Sánchez’s comments came as Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto on Saturday defended Nafta – which Trump called “the worst trade deal in history” when he was on the hustings – and told the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Lima...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

It's a well-known fact that Iberoamerican cinema, which includes Latin American, Spanish, and Portuguese productions, has had a prominent presence at the most important international film festivals for several years now and several films have been recognized at some of the most important film awards around the world. Colombia's "Embrace of the Serpent" earning the country's first-ever Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category and Argentina's "Wild Tales" taking home the 2016 BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in English Language are juts two examples of recent victories.
Acknowledging the need for a unified industry in the region and a platform for the Iberoamerican industry to honor and support its own productions, the Premios Platino of Iberoamerican Cinema were born three years ago. Each year the organizing committee selects a diverse group of nominees and invites members of the industry across the American continent and the Iberian peninsula to vote in order to select the winners. The ceremony takes place in a different country every year as a way to include all of the varied industries in the process and execution of the event.
This morning, after considering more than 150 films from a pool of over 800 theatrically releases productions, the final nominees were announced by a group of talented actors, including legendary Mexican-American thespian Edward James Olmos, and filmmakers led by CNN en Español's journalist Juan Carlos Arciniegas. Guatemala's Berlin-winning gem "Ixcanul" received 8 nominations, just as Colombia's Oscar-nominated "Embrace of the Serpent" did. These two gorgeously executed works center on indigenous stories and highlight the rich cultural heritage of Latin America. It's a pleasant surprise to see these two fantastic films get the most love.
Chile's "The Club" and Argentina's "The Clan," films by the two most prolific Pablos working in South America, Pablo Larrain and Pablo Trapero, received 6 nominations each. Larrain's dark tale about Catholic priests with questionable pasts was also nominated this year for a Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Perhaps one of the most surprising, yet well-deserved nominations, was the inclusion of Alonso Ruizpalacios among the Best Director nominees for his brilliant debut "Güeros."
Two films distributed by Pantelion received nomations: "600 Miles" and "Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos." Oscilloscope earned 10 mentions with properties "Ma Ma" and "Embrace of the Serpent." Kino Lorber's "Ixcanul, ""Güeros," and "The Pearl Button" also earned the art house distributor 10 nominations.
Regarding the quality of the films being produced in Iberoamerica Egeda's Elvi Cano said, “This has been an exceptional year for Iberoamerican Cinema, with 826 qualifying releases. Iberoamerican Cinema is alive, growing and stronger then ever.” Renowned journalist and host Juan Carlos Arciniegas added," These awards are starting a revolution and it's my dream, as an ambassador for Premios Platino, that these magnificent films that got nominated today to be seen by all our Iberoamerican audiences. I can't be more proud of what our filmmakers are doing today and if the public don't get to enjoy them, we won't be doing our job"
The 3rd Annual Premios Platino of Iberoamerican Cinema will take place on July 24th in Punta del Este, Uruguay

Pantelion, the leading distributor of Latino-oriented theatrical releases stateside, is ready to score another box-office success during this year's Labor Day weekend, which has proven to be a particularly profitable date for them. Following last year's animated hit "Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos," a new Spanish-language comedy titled "No Manches Friday," starring Omar Chaparro ("Compadres") and Martha Higareda ("Street Kings"), is set to captivate audiences both in Mexico and the U.S. Directed by Spanish helmer Nacho G. Velilla, "No Manches Frida" is a remake of the highly successful German film "F... You Goethe."

The film opens nationwide on September 2nd, 2016.
The official synopsis reads as follows:
"No Manches Frida" is the story of Zequi (Omar Chaparro), a recently released bank robber who goes to recover stolen money buried by his ditzy accomplice before going to jail. They return to the site only to find that Frida Kahlo High has built a gymnasium over the loot. To get the money, he poses as a substitute teacher for a school that can’t seem to keep any teachers around. He meets the sweet and earnest Lucy (Martha Higareda), as well as an unruly classroom. Lucy and her fellow teachers (Fernanda Castillo and Adal Ramones) have no control over the students, and Zequi comes in ready to lay down the law- but he quickly finds out that life on the inside may havebeen easier to deal with than a school full of wild and rebellious teenagers.

The name of the lovestruck female love interest for the male protagonist is almost never uttered. His name is mentioned constantly, natch. What a metaphor!

Note: This is not a “review” of Huevos: Little Rooster’s Egg-Cellent Adventure (Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos)! It is simply an examination of how well or how poorly it represents women. (A movie that represents women well can still be a terrible film; a movie that represents women poorly can still be a great film.) Bad chicken-and-egg puns and indoctrination into animal cruelty as just good fun for everyone involved (including the animals). You know, for kids. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos translates into English as A Rooster with Many Eggs. Which doesn’t make any sense: roosters don’t have eggs or lay eggs; hens do that. But of course in Spanish, huevos is slang for “balls”… that is, testicles. So a fair transliteration of the title of this flick is A Rooster with Lots of Balls, or maybe just A Rooster with Balls. Which means that this CGI cartoon — in which the word huevos gets uttered a lot, and which features anthropomorphized eggs with arms and legs and faces and names — was intended to be one long dick joke. You know, for kids.

The animated comedy Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos ("The Ballsy Chicken") from Mexican filmmakers and brothers, Gabriel & Rodolfo Riva Palacio Alatrist, marks their third film in a trilogy based on their Huevos Cartoons. However, their two other animated projects were too racy for American audiences, according to their star Omar Chaparro who voices a duck in Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos. This film marks the first time one of their films has been distributed in the United States, and they are talking to CineMovie about the hardships of animating a 3D film in Mexico and keeping the humor more PG this time around.

Let me tell you about my personal history with M. Night Shyamalan. When I was 10 years old, I watched his third film Signs for the first time, and it changed my life. Signs was the first film to make me love films, to want to spend my life doing something with films. It was the first film that I watched and immediately understood and grasped onto the subtext and themes of the film, and the fact that a film could do that blew my tiny mind.
Before then, I had always loved film, but I had always watched them only taking in what was explicitly on screen. M. Night Shyamalan then became the first director I got into, as I went back and watched...

Shyamalan's last film was the 2013 sci-fi adventure After Earth, featuring father and son duo Will and Jaden Smith.
Last weekend's number one movie War Room slipped to third place with $7.4m, but it was Straight Outta Compton that had a huge drop at the box office.

Summer is officially over and although most of the end-of-summer crap has been dumped over the last few weekends the box office continues showing the usual slow down as the doldrums between summer and the Thanksgiving roll through. Number one went to lazy thriller The Perfect Guy which banked a surprisingly high $26 million. That was just enough to edge out M. Night Shyalaman's latest offering, The Visit, which took a close second with $25 million. The Visit marks his second lowest opening ever and something of a surprise that audiences are still willing to give him another chance after a depressingly long chain of disappointments. Writer/director Michael Polish's newest movie 90 Minutes in Heaven bowed in at ninth place with a miniscule $2.1 million. That was enough to edge out Spanish language animated flick Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos which expanded to over 600 screens to bank $1.9 million and a tenth place expansion.

Updated: Predictions at the bottom of this post have been updated as final theater counts have arrived. The text of today's forecast article has not been edited and the early predictions are listed at the bottom of this article for comparison. It has been slow-going at the box office as of late. This past four-day, Labor Day weekend haul came in at just $85.7 million for the top twelve, the worst Labor Day weekend result since 2004 where films such as Paparazzi, Wicker Park, Vanity Fair and The Cookout all cracked the top ten. Remember them? Things actually got worse the following weekend back in 2004, and it looks as if this year won't be any different, despite the efforts of new releases such as M. Night Shyamalan's micro-budget horror The Visit and Screen Gems' The Perfect Guy, led by Michael Ealy, Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut and "True Blood" star Rutina Wesley.

Los Angeles (AP) - Mass audience blockbusters gave way to the small and highly targeted over a sleepy Labor Day weekend at the box office.
Sony's faith-based "War Room" fought its way to first place in its second weekend in release, earning an estimated $12.6 million across the four-day holiday weekend. The micro-budget family drama has earned $27.9 million to date according to the studio.
New release "A Walk in the Woods," debuted in third place, behind "Straight Outta Compton," with $10.5 million from 1,960 screens, while the action pic "The Transporter Refueled" took fifth with a lackluster $9 million from over 3,400 screens.
But, it was Pantelion's Spanish-language animated film "Un Gallo con Muchos Huevos," that truly stood out among the pack, taking in $4.4 million from just 395 locations.

Always the worst performing holiday for moviegoing, this Labor Day weekend marks the end of an overall strong summer. But it's one of the lowest since 2004 (longer if you don't adjust for inflation). The three-day total of $60 million is down a fourth from the $80 million for 2014's holiday (actually about a week earlier then). It is only 20% better than the exact date in 2014, the traditional post-holiday worst-grossing weekend of the year. The dearth of top studio product beyond "Straight Outta Compton" (Universal) and "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" (Paramount) allowed a handful of lower-budget, targeted audience films to do stand out more. "War Room," Sony's surprising #1 faith-based success, Broad Green's first wide release "A Walk in the Woods" hit with older audiences and the Mexican animated film "Un Gallo con muchos huevos" placed both higher in position and better than expected. EuroCorp's actioner "Transporter...

The computer-animated Mexican movie “Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos” — in English, The Rooster With Many Eggs — translated very well at the box office this weekend for Lionsgate’s Pantelion Films. In just 395 theaters, “Un Gallo Con Muchos Huevos” will take in an estimated $4.2 million over the four-day Labor Day holiday, good enough to crack the top 10 in seventh place. Despite screening in Spanish with subtitles and without a significant English-language ad campaign, the film posted the best per-screen average of any movie in release at $11,140 . It also received an “A+” CinemaScore and is the second-best opening ever...

It's pretty rare for a movie to rise from second place to first at the box office in its second week of release. It's pretty rare for such a movie to defeat a summer smash that's topped the chart for three weeks running. And it's pretty rare for a low-budget, Christian-themed movie with a star-free cast to become the top-grossing film in North America.
And yet, "War Room" did all three of those things this week. After last weekend's impressive $11.4 million debut in the No. 2 slot, the film rose to the top spot this weekend with an estimated $9.4 million from Friday to Sunday (and a projected $12.3 million over the four-day holiday weekend). It dethroned previous three-time champ "Straight Outta Compton" (No. 2, with an estimated $8.9 million from Friday to Sunday and $11.2 million over the Labor Day holiday). Sony is reporting that War Room, their faith-based film from Affirm Films, dropped a slight 18% in its second week, taking in $9.3M for the three-day domestic box office and the #1 spot on the charts.
