Bill Maher is taking on people who plan to still wear masks and socially distance in California after June 15.
The host of HBO’s Real Time, who was forced to cancel a couple of shows after testing positive for Covid last month, said, “California, we’re back baby, June 15, maybe we can stop this silly distancing and masking bullshit. Tuesday, California lifts its restrictions. A lot of people out here and a lot of people everywhere, I don’t understand these people, they say they’re going to continue to wear masks even after [the government] sounds the all clear.”
“It’s like having sex with a condom and then saying I think I’ll just leave it on for the rest of the night. Look, you’re never going to have 100% Covid-free atmosphere, viruses always stay. I can’t guarantee everything, we just have to live again,” he added.

Neil deGrasse Tyson apologized this morning following a tweet Sunday deemed
“insensitive” about the weekend mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton that sparked a fierce reaction on social media, but not everyone is accepting his apology.
“My intent was to offer objectively true information that might help shape conversations and reactions to preventable ways we die,” Tyson wrote in his apology Monday morning on Facebook.
“Where I miscalculated was that I genuinely believed the Tweet would be helpful to anyone trying to save lives in America. What I learned from the range of reactions is that for many people, some information — my Tweet in particular — can be true but unhelpful, especially at a time when many people are either still in shock, or trying to heal — or both.”
Tyson continued: “So if you are one of those people, I apologize for not knowing in advance what effect my Tweet could have on you.

Neil deGrasse Tyson has issued an apology on Facebook after coming under fire for a controversial reaction to the recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. The scientist and television personality originally posted the following comment on Twitter: “In the past 48 hours, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings. On average, across any 48 hours, we also lose 500 to medical errors, 300 to the flu, 250 to suicide, 200 to car accidents, 40 to homicide via handgun. Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data.”
Tyson’s response sparked backlash as many social media users felt his comment diminished the tragedies of the two mass shootings. The August 3 shooting took place at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, and left 20 dead and more than two dozen people wounded. A second shooting occurred August 4 in Dayton, Ohio, killing nine people and leaving 26 others injured.

Neil deGrasse Tyson will stay as director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium after the organization’s investigation into two womens’ sexual misconduct claims ended.
Tyson “remains an employee and director of the Hayden Planetarium,” said a statement from the American Museum of Natural History. The planetarium is part of the American Museum of Natural History.
The apparent exoneration of Tyson follows other misconduct accusations against the famous astrophysicist/TV personality last November. Those complaints prompted Fox, Nat Geo and the series producers to launch a probe.
While it was ongoing, Fox and Nat Geo put on hold the Season 2 premiere of science docuseries Cosmos, originally slated for March 3, 2019. Meanwhile, Nat Geo pulled its Tyson-hosted StarTalk off the air after the new allegations surfaced.

Over the 11-season run of “Life Below Zero,” the NatGeo series has won a trio of Emmys. If, in addition to Cinematography and Picture Editing, there was a category for “pulling a snowmobile from a freezing lake in the immediate aftermath of a dangerous windstorm,” the show might be up for a few more.
The new short form series “Life Behind Life Below Zero” (itself competing for an Emmy this year) charts the behind-the-scenes efforts it takes to document life in extreme freezing conditions. It illustrates how phrases like “we had to abandon our camp” and inescapable facts like an already untenable temperature dropping another 40 degrees are part of the realities of this show’s production.
This episode features interview snippets with the show’s crew, from those running cameras to the series’ Safety Manager. For a show ostensibly set in a place where extreme conditions are the norm, it...

National Geographic Global Networks President Courteney Monroe opened the brand’s block of time at TCA addressing what she said was the question she gets asked most often these days.
No, it’s not if/when the remaining episodes of Neil deGrasse Tyson-hosted StarTalk will see the light of day and if Tyson-hosted Cosmos’s March 3 launch had been aborted.
The question she gets asked most often, she said, is what the upcoming Disney transaction will mean for NatGeo.

To celebrate the upcoming change of parent companies, she had reprinted for TV critics at TCA a 1963 National Geographic magazine feature on Walt Disney.

Extra host A.J. Calloway, who was accused of sexual assault in June by writer Sil Lai Abrams, is facing more allegations. Two women, who wish to remain anonymous, have told The Daily Beast that they were assaulted by Calloway — one of whom reported her claim to the police on Dec. 24. Abrams told The Daily Beast that she has spoken to nine other alleged victims who have shared similar stories of alleged sexual misconduct by the TV personality.
There are no current plans for Calloway to be investigated by Warner Bros., whose Telepictures division produces entertainment newsmagazine Extra.

National Geographic Channel has pulled Neil deGrasse Tyson‘s chat show StarTalk off its schedule while Fox Networks Group conducts a sexual misconduct investigation into the host/astrophysicist, our sister site Variety reports.
Last November, Tyson’s former assistant, Ashley Watson, claimed that she was forced to quit her job over Tyson’s inappropriate sexual advances. Additionally, Bucknell professor Dr. Katelyn N. Allers accused Tyson of groping her at an after-party for the American Astronomical Society in 2009. Tyson responded to each claim, plus an earlier rape accusation made by fellow former graduate student Tchiya Amet, in a lengthy Facebook post.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s show “StarTalk” hasn’t aired a new episode since November of last year. That hiatus might continue for the foreseeable future as the host continues to be under investigation for allegations made against him in late November, originally published on Patheos.
The post detailed misconduct claims from two different women. One claimed Tyson groped her while taking a photograph, while a former assistant claimed that Tyson made inappropriate advances towards her.
When the latest allegations surfaced, Tyson responded to the accusations in a Facebook post, concluding with “Accusations can damage a reputation and a marriage. Sometimes irreversibly. I see myself as a loving husband and as a public servant – a scientist and educator who serves at the will of the public. I am grateful for the support I’ve received from those who continue to respect and value me and my work.” Tyson also said that...

National Geographic Channel has pulled its long-running Neil deGrasse Tyson chat show “StarTalk” off the air, at least for now, following allegations of sexual misconduct against the famed astrophysicist. “StarTalk” will remain on hiatus as a Fox Networks Group investigation into the multiple claims continues.

National Geographic Channel has season premiere dates for a pair of its returning series. The 11th season of docuseries Life Below Zero bows September 25, and Season 4 of interview show StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson — which includes an interview with the late Anthony Bourdain — launches November 12.
The logline for the coming 12-episode run of Life Below Zero, which will include its 100 episode: Our daring and creative crew work tirelessly behind the scenes to capture the lifestyles our tough Alaskans live, putting themselves through the most daunting and challenging situations. They’ve shot the series in temperatures as low as minus 40 F, and often carry backpacks of batteries that weigh more than 100 pounds. The crew masterminded a technique, powered by solar energy, that withstood the harsh climate to record a 17-day long time lapse. In the winter months they may see a few hours of twilight — no full sun — each day.

Sorry Twitter, add famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to the list of users who doesn’t understand the move from 140 to 280 characters.
“I don’t want 280 characters,” Tyson said. “It’s an excuse to not be succinct. If you cant do it in 140 characters then write a book. Choose another medium.”
Tyson has 10.1 million followers on the social media platform, so his opinion ought to carry some weight. Tyson said he uses Twitter as a means to share what’s on his mind — sometimes humorous, sometimes ponderous but usually insightful.
But he’s not under the illusion that the rise of these platforms has helped educate the public. Rather, he notes, “the fact that I have 12 different platforms to communicate also means that so does everybody else who is either scientifically illiterate or doesn’t have your best interests in mind.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s loquacious personality is enough to bring people to National Geographic for “StarTalk,” but guests like filmmaker Kevin Smith is what keeps viewers coming back. Airing Sunday nights at 11/10c p.m., this week’s episode of Tyson’s weekly talk show will feature a riveting conversation with the “Clerks” director about the science of superheroes, the ongoing appreciation of comic books, and this generation’s obsession with events like Comic-Con.
Smith is a notorious superhero fan, and in the exclusive clip for this Sunday’s episode, Smith reveals what his number one superpower would be. While his answer isn’t what anyone would expect, it’s definitely on brand for “StarTalk,” as Tyson uses it to dive into the complex thought of our favorite superhero villains, such as Lex Luthor.

Mike Posner may not be the first person you'd expect to have a podcast. After all, he had a hit song in 2009 -- the earworm known as "Cooler Than Me" -- and made an impressive comeback in 2016 after a few years away from the spotlight, namely with his banger, "I Took a Pill in Ibiza."
But if you know Posner, the opportunity for introspection isn't strange at all. In fact, his new podcast, What Does This All Mean?, is a natural extension for the inquisitive Duke University grad. The new series explores what it means to be human, with a recent episode diving deep into his life-changing, chance meeting with Kanye West that ultimately led to a lesson in how to turn failure into success. Posner knows what it's like to reach the heights of fame and also how to find himself again, which makes the difficult journeys he's taking us on with his 10-episode podcast all the more...

It’s been a long-debated topic: Could Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack have fit on the door and survived at the end of James Cameron’s “Titanic?” “StarTalk” host and Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, however, is less concerned with whether he could’ve survived and more about why he didn’t even try. “Whether or not he could’ve been successful, I would’ve tried more than once. No!” deGrasse Tyson told HuffPost. “The survival instinct is way stronger than that in everybody,...

“For so many people, learning is a chore, but laughing is not. If we can combine learning with laughing, you can teach anybody, anything,” says famed American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who does exactly that as host of the National Geographic talk show StarTalk, which returns on Sunday, Oct. 1 with a new season of facts, laughs and plenty of A-list guests.
While the show regularly features scientific commentary and cosmic queries, it’s all delivered with a comedic punch. And in today’s polarizing political climate, Tyson says “it’s a comedian’s obligation to challenge social, cultural and political norms.” If they are not, then no one is being challenged to think, he adds.
So it makes sense then that so many funny people, including Ben Stiller, Jay Leno, Larry Wilmore and Whoopi Goldberg, have stopped by the show. “When a comedian is on the show as a guest, I don't seek...

You wouldn’t think that National Geographic talk show “StarTalk,” hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, would have anything in common with its Emmy rival for Outstanding Informational Series or Special, 90-year-old James Lipton’s “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” which Bravo airs to a global audience of 94 million in 125 countries. “StarTalk” started as a Syrius podcast — NatGeo cherrypicks 20 episodes for the TV show — and is up for its third Emmy, while “Studio,” with 20 nominations and one win in 2013, is the sixth most-nominated show ever.
Both men wrangle celebrities, who submit to being interviewed on camera at length, and then edit the hell out of what they get. Lipton and Tyson use this celebrity wattage to lure viewers into watching subjects near to their hearts: the art of acting and the power of science, respectively.

Sweet Christmas, everyone – this year’s Awesome Con was busy as all get-out and chock-full of cool things to see and do, and con season is rushing by so fast that I’m just now getting to my recap! (We can also blame the con crud for this, alas. It’s been following me around for a solid month.) As always, there were way more activities than one mere mortal could get to. And on top of that, this was the first year where I really saw multiple events surrounding the con that were either not directly affiliated with the con but inspired by it, or connected to it but not part of the main con experience.
So let’s start there. First off, I was part of a pre-con round-table interview Awesome Con set up with the inestimable Stan Lee. Stan answered many great questions. He talked about what...
