Different Versions of Franco's Virgin
The Three Faces of Christina (2013)
**** (out of 4)
This documentary talks about the various versions out there of Jess Franco's Christina, PRINCESS OF EROTICISM, which is better known to most people as A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD. Historians Alain Petit, Daniel Lesoeur and Lucas Balbo discuss the original cut of Franco's film and how it didn't go over well in France, which led the studio to hired another director to film new erotic scenes. The man who directed those scenes, Jean-Pierre Bouyxou is also interviewed here and talks about what he did. The historians then talk about how bad of a cut this version is and then we get to the "zombie" version, which had new scenes added by Jean Rollin. Once again the historians talk about why this version was made and finally the only version that director Franco sees as him. If you're familiar with Franco and this film then you know that there's even more versions out there than what's discussed here but the documentary does a fantastic job at letting newbies to the subject know the differences and to understand which one they should be watching. Clips from all three versions are shown and it's a great way to understand the crazy world of Franco and all the alternate versions.
