The carpeting in the hotel elevator and halls is patterned after the famous orange carpet design seen in the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's "The Shining".
According to Damon Lindelof, Kevin is suffering from the prophet's dilemma, which is (mentioned in "Guest" in season one). Lindelof defines the dilemma as such: "In a post-Departure world, if you have a weird dream, you wake up wondering, "Is God talking to me?"
The quote on Kevin's closet doors comes from Greek philosopher Epictetus's teachings. Epictetus was a philosopher who believed in divine intervention as well as the human capacity to take control of certain situations.
