Not Bad. Painful To listen to At times
jxfa20 August 2017
Movie was decent. Above average for a found footage. The Black guy and his stereotypical loud voice nearly caused me to give this movie a 1 star as he was SO annoying. And I mean SO annoying I had to cover my ears sometimes when he went on his rants. Don't know why they still think that that's needed.

If i hear "oh haaale naw" again...
andrewmcl83-170-76441611 December 2019
This movie coulda been good but the lead actors are brutal.... if you can stand 10 minutes of the black guy's voice I give you credit. He's got one of those awful high pitch voice where he over acts trying to put on a blackcent SO BAD every time he speaks. If he would have just used his real voice it may have been more bearable. Btw he says "oh haaaaaale no!" about once a minute....

Almost good!
briz_boy_1022 August 2017
I first saw this film advertised on the IMDb homepage so decided to check it out after finding the trailer really interesting. Ever since the Blair Witch Project the hand held 'real life' camera method has always given the film an air of mystery as we don't always tend to see what the character sees. However, I can assure you this film is different and doesn't just build up anti-climatic suspense.

The film contains a group of adults wanting to make a documentary about different kinds of monsters to bump up views for their YouTube page when they're contacted by volunteers to give interviews, whilst the crew initially brush the claims off as ridiculousness, they soon start to change their beliefs.

The premise is interesting and the film starts that way too even if it is a little slow to get into. A film like this shouldn't really go over the 80 minute mark but what you gonna do?

There are a few jump scares and once the 'chaos' kicks in it does get really intense. The first 2/3 of the film are the most suspenseful and intriguing parts but come the final third act, we are left with that unfulfilling feeling of emptiness and predictability that these camcorder films tend to conjure up.

Overall, its a fun little film to watch with your friends on a weekend night for a few scares, but it's not a film that will leave a trace in your memory. 5/10

The Monster Project: Potential turned generic
Platypuschow23 August 2017
I had just high hopes for The Monster Project, I watched the trailer and sat in awe thinking of the potential the movie had and was overjoyed when I found myself with the opportunity to finally watch it.

The concept is fantastic, a documentary film crew going to a "Haunted location" to interview three volunteers who claim to be monsters. We have a supposed vampire, demonically possessed girl and skinwalker and as you can imagine it all goes wrong when they turn out to be real.

The movie starts off okay, introducing the characters and introducing our "Monsters" but as soon as anything actually happens it spirals out of control fast.

What I mean by that is it goes from a great idea to yet another found footage mess. Lots of screaming, lots of shaky cam, lots of predictable jump scares, lots of running away and the obligatory nightvision.

The concept goes out the window and the generic clichéd mess appears and that just broke my heart. What should have been a great film turned into one of the hundred found footage films you can find on Netflix alone.

Go in with low expectations and you might find something, I went in with them high and was sorely disappointed.

The Good:

Great ideas

The Bad:

Generic night vision boredom

Awful protagonist

Solid Found Footage Film, With Several Problematic Issues
neener370717 January 2018
While the idea for the film is a good premise with loads of potential, the film becomes another one of the many average found footage films. The plot is simple enough, a documentary group sets out to make a film about monsters while they know they don't exist. When they finally get 3 supposed monsters to be in the documentary, they set up an interview at a creepy old house, but when they finish the interviews, the supposed monsters show their true form. The story unfortunately is just that, a good idea but they fail flesh out this story and it ends up being too thin. They try to add other story elements but they go by so quick and don't effect the rest of the film.

First of all, the acting is very hit and miss, some of the actors do a serviceable job in their roles, but a couple of the actors are so ridiculous and over-done that it made wish they would just stop talking. The visuals also are hit and miss, while the make-up for the skinwalker is very cool, the special effects in other areas are very low quality, something you would see in a bargain bin at Walmart. The film also fails to set a tone like many other found footage films like Blair Witch Project, it just goes from scene to scene with no consistence, though the lighting is moody and effective at moments. The film also tries to be existential and though provoking regarding the ideas of good and evil, but the are cliched and has all been done before.

So in short, the film is hit and miss, some very strong scenes and film elements, but unfortunately some very unflattering acting and special effects.

Great potential, but fails to deliver
eebarber23 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The trailer for this movie held a lot of promise. But there were three major issues. First there were unnecessary side plots such as Bryan's drug use and the quasi-love triangle between Bryan, Murielle and Devon. Second, Jamal's character was badly written, unfortunately stereotyped (and at times painfully annoying). Finally, the biggest issue was the convoluted ending involving Devon's betrayal and his coming as the Anti-Christ. Sometimes, simpler is just better. Here's how it would have been instantly better: completely dispense with the subplots and the plot twist at the end. Keep it simple, tight and straightforward. And tone down Jamal's character.

If the filmmakers just stuck to the basic premise of a team web filmmakers seeking greater fame and fortune but instead getting more than they bargained for, that'd been fine. The effects were fine and the found footage angle still works. But unfortunately this was another example where the trailer was better than the actual movie.

Stereotype Much
lfattina23 April 2018
Okay so I'm only 20 minutes into it and about to shut it off mainly because the black guy is so OVER THE TOP at being a black guy stereotype it's almost unwatchable. You know that stereotype where the black person in the theater yells at the screen. This is like that. He has a comment for everything and it's just ridiculously annoying. I seriously hope he dies later because if he survives, i'm coming back and giving this a 2.

A well made film with some effective SFX. Shame about some of the actors, though.
manuelasaez18 August 2017
I saw the trailer for this film, and I thought the premise was unique, interesting and could potentially yield an entertaining and thoughtfully made film, and I was almost completely right in my assessment. From the onset, the film makes no qualms about what it is trying to achieve. A group of people set out to prove that monsters are real by interviewing 3 people who claim to be real life monsters. It is a premise that writes itself. The acting is competent, and most of the actors are quite talented. The standout of this film, by far, are the special effects. The Skinwalker and the vampire were really well done, and the action scenes were filmed with a competence usually exerted by bigger budget films. It seems like whoever budgeted this movie made it a point to not skimp out on the SFX, and this elevated the film to a much higher standard. I was constantly impressed by some of the make-up and transformations. If more independent movies allocated their funds to SFX, they would produce much more entertaining films. Overall, it is a decent film that does some incredibly clever things that have not been attempted before. If nothing else, people should watch this film just to see an original and unique production. It is a rarity in this age of sequels.

I will end my review with this; The character who played "Jamal" was horrible, offensive, needlessly loud, and entirely stereotypical. Whoever wrote his character should be ashamed of themselves for perpetuating such limited and thoughtless characteristics on any character. Never mind that he was the absolute worst of the entire cast, every time he spoke, it was like nails on a chalkboard. 2 points were removed from my score simply because I hated the character so much. He nearly ruined what was a very decent and entertaining film.

Wasted Opportunity...
royeighmey12 October 2021
Jamal Quezaire I believe is the African American actor in this film. Irritating as hell!! The character they had him portraying was like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard!! Besides that, the premise wasn't terrible but the execution is lame. Acting was amateurish at best. The only redeeming quality, sort of, are the special effects. Low budget movies can be good, but not this one.

good movie despite a LOT
amymay-6991624 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First, let's address the WORST part of the movie. The plot holes? They existed, but no. The shaky cam footage? Nah. The annoying black guy? BINGO!! For a low budget, the acting was really decent, bryan being my fave character but JAMAL?!?!??! That dude was the literal trashiest, most horrid part of this movie. Sterotypical "hip" black dude, scared of his own shadow, spouting lame one liners, overly loud, whiny and terrified constantly,as well as being an unprepared cameraperson and awful friend. I HATED his very voice and wished he would stay true to the sterotype he was acting like and would die first, just to save us the torture of his mouth and let us enjoy the rest of the movie. Martha's makeup was bad,as were the vampire's contacts and the whole skinwalker cop first impression (disguised voice, wearing a body cam off dutt, the whole skinwalker backstory, but being offended by skinwalker backstory...). That being said, the SFX were AMAZING! The skinwalker was truly freaky, the demon was horrifying, and the vamp was spooky!!! GREAT work! The end shocked me,because it was not your typical "found footage" ending. I actually hesitate to deem it FF,as all the action didn't 100% come from the hand/head held cameras. But yeah, not a bad film! Hey,jamal (because lazily, many characters were named after the actors, and jamal is jamal's real name) you SUCKED,and YOU brought this movie down. Many in the comments have stated it. You were the WORST.

Good visuals but a poor story
jhitman-826-87769418 August 2017
This is going to be a brief review for a average movie.

Plott not interesting enough to glue me to my chair but I've seen worse.

Visualfx and especial effects are good has well the audio, the ambiance was OK too.

Acting was not that good but the effort was there to make the viewer at least curious to see what this will unfold in the end.

A cliché ending in my opinion.

The trailer spoils a lot of the movie and to many predictable jump scares,i give it a 6 for the visuals and audio.

Could be so, so, so, so, so, so...... much better.
notom-2301218 August 2017
This could have been a great - no... brilliant movie.

The actors were - in most cases - pure stereotypes - and in a couple of cases, abusively so (The 'witless', 'scared' - 'Black'/'African-American'/'Colored'/'person of "African descent" '/ or whatever PC euphemism is now prevalent - cameraman as the main example)

The screenplay is diabolically bad - but the idea... the idea has(d) potential.

My advice - submit the premise to a studio that can turn it into a watchable movie instead of pure faeces.

Droll and boring
bullywag18 August 2017
Meh, just glad I did not pay to see this. Felt like it was made by kids in high school. 95 min of my life wasted. Story was dull, acting was dull and the use of night vision got real boring real fast. Oh yeah, jump scares are so 80s. The story was very convoluted and the 'twist' at the end was mild to say the least.

I have a crucifix from the Friendly Baptist Church!
nogodnomasters20 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Devon (Justin Bruening) and Jamal (Jamal Quezaire) are amateur "monster" film makers who post their hoaxes on U-tube. Devon gets the idea to film "real" monsters by placing an ad in an LA newspaper. His circle includes ex-junkie Bryan, who is a quiet religious person and later we get a deeper story. There is also Murielle (Murielle Zuker) Devon's ex-girlfriend, a girl Bryan (Toby Hemingway) thinks he has a shot at until Devon asks Murielle to direct his film.

The ad has turned up three people, a vampire (Yvonne Zima) a demon possessed girl (Shiori Ideta) and a Navajo skin-walker (Steven Flores). They are to be interviewed at an old out of the way home during a lunar eclipse. Once the characters are well established the film picks up with a smartly written interview of the vampire who was well portrayed in spite of the contacts. Likewise the other interviews were fairly decent and then they killed the film when they killed the lights. At this point everything went to green first person head cam which was shaky and poorly shot. Sometimes there was a floor cam and other times we had a monster point of view, even though they weren't wearing a cam.

As the film slid downhill, they decided to get cute and end it with a twist, one that was poorly conceive and executed.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Nothing to see here
Leofwine_draca6 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Another day, another found footage indie horror flick consisting of three stories explored by a documentary film crew. Their remit is to meet and interview three real-life monsters, who take the form of a demon, a vampire, and a skinwalker. What this all boils down to is the usual shaky-camera material and a mix of slow and boring interview snippets with some night camera incidents borrowed from the likes of BLAIR WITCH and REC (or QUARANTINE). It's all very low rent, predictable, and not at all scary.

Better than I had supposed.
kryptonarie2 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Monster Project was much better than what I had supposed: the acting was good by some, and not as good by some others, but all in all, a pretty entertaining monster movie was pulled off. The monsters where a great surprise A+++, they were done exceptionally well, and they appeared to be done with little to no CGI? The things that kept me from rating this movie better were: 1st, the footage filmed inside the house and after the interviews, the cinematography was disproportionately too dark, which made many scenes difficult to follow. Secondly, I agree with another reviewer who said, they could've done without the last ten minutes of this film. The story didn't need the cult and for sure it didn't need the evoking and promoting of narcissist personality disorder guy to the stratum of Satan either. The ending scenario was not beneficial nor did it support the rest of the movie. The ending should have been about found footage being found which confirmed "monsters are real!"

Interesting Concept Let Down by Annoying Characters
BigZ_733729 August 2017
Monster Project has an interesting concept, it's a found footage horror film about a group of annoying characters that want to interview people that think they're real monsters. However things get complicated when the three people they're interviewing are actual monsters. The middle of the film is definitely the best part, where they explore the haunted house where they're conducting the interviews, and then do the actual interviews. I enjoyed a lot of the things they did with the interviews, as they play around with the rules of the monsters. The problem parts of the film come before and after that, with the beginning being full of annoying and pointless character drama delivered by mediocre to bad actors. The worst being the camera man, which is one of the biggest sins a found footage film can have, as no one likes having an annoying guy talking off screen (and obviously in a sound booth) while everything's going on. The movie after the interviews is also deeply flawed, as a lot of monster rules set up during the interview are immediately broken. With the vampire going from a tattoo artist that licks her canvas's blood as part of her payment, to being a mindless beast. The skinwalker is also turned immediately into a generic werewolf, with the generic characteristics including a scratch turning the victim into a werewolf, even though the film went out of it's way to describe how someone becomes a skinwalker (murdering a family member). The CGI for the girl possessed by a demon is also really bad and distracting. I won't spoil the end, but I will say that it's also incredibly stupid, and there's a stupid Bagul scare at the very end.

Overall, I'd advise people to stay away from Monster Factory unless you're a huge Found Footage Horror fan. If you want to see the video version of my review, you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6oSf_VoH3k

We like to pretend monsters are real
A-Zupreme27 November 2017
A man hires an odd group of filmmakers to help him with The Monster Project, a documentary where he interviews three people who truly believe that they're monsters in today's society. The production, of course, takes place at a boarded-up house used for satanic rituals back in the 60s. On the night of a lunar eclipse, no less. While everyone who has ever seen a horror movie would see something seriously wrong with this scenario, this group thinks they're just making a film and press on to get their interviews. That is until all Hell breaks loose and they're fighting for survival. Oops.

Has it been done before? Yes, but we all come back again and again for more scares so I can't knock the story for being a bit cliché. The effects were really good and easily the best part of this movie. The acting was serviceable, with the exception of one cast member (not saying who) who overacted a bit. I will say that I was most impressed with Toby Hemingway and Yvonne Zima, and I found the interaction between their characters strangely compelling and effective. Even the 'found-footage' device was handled fairly well.

The horror genre in general is a tough one to rate. On one hand, some movies are so well done and scary that it's hard not to rate them high. On the other, some are just entertaining and fun. The Monster Project falls a bit more into the latter camp in that it's a well-made movie that gets a lot right, but unfortunately it just doesn't have that scare factor I was hoping for. It doesn't appear to sell itself as a comedy, so I suspect that they were going for a truly scary experience but I just wasn't feeling it for some reason. I can't hate on it though. I can tell a lot of heart and passion went into this, and I want to thank the crew for making a good movie.

Interesting idea but fails on scriptwriting
gamleprut2 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of going out there finding real monsters is an interesting idea and it could have developed into a solid horror movie but alas the scriptwriters ran out of "ideas" (other that when can we cash the check) after the basic premise. The rest of the story is just meh.. you can watch it to the end or you can grab a nap. It really doesn't matter.

Okay, but the overacting and unnecessary drama hurt it bad
WisdomsHammer22 April 2018
The premise: A couple of YouTubers making fake monster videos put out an ad to film and interview any REAL monsters in the area, without expecting to get exactly that. (The trailer gives all this away, so I'm not spoiling anything.)

The premise is great, but there really isn't much of a story. I guess that's the way a lot of found footage movies are if they're done well - they feel spontaneous. This didn't. It felt scripted.

The effects are great, and the performances of the people being interviewed are good, in my opinion. But the interviewing team's performances are terrible. A lot of overacting. And who ever heard of a cameraperson that won't shut up? Things get better as the movie progresses, but the beginning is very annoying. I think his character was supposed to be some sort of comic relief?

The story was periodically derailed by unnecessary drama among the crew - which they filmed and included in their "monster documentary" for some unknown reason.

The atmospheric sound effects and music were good, but WAY too heavy-handed and in some cases, just unnecessary.

Loved the special effects and makeup! They were so good that I didn't understand why they pulled the camera away from the action or lit things so you could barely see them. There were enough close ups to see that they didn't need to.

The ending caught me by surprise only because it seemed so inconsistent with the rest of the movie. It didn't make sense and felt like a last minute idea. If the rest of the movie would have supported the ending better, I think I may have liked the whole thing a lot more.

If you watch the first 10 minutes or so, then skip to about a quarter of the way in, you might have a better experience. If I ever watch this again, that's what I plan to do.

It's worth a watch, but this is too flawed to be called "good." It's just "okay." I'm being generous in giving it 6/10.

Great idea, poor execution
mykemirage26 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I honestly cannot find it in myself to ever watch this movie ever again. I would rather eat something rotten that gives me horrendous diarrhea and sit on the toilet for 24 hours than endure this movie's hour and a half run-time again.

In terms of the acting, the only one who I felt did a good job was Yvonne Zima who plays Shayla the Vampire. Her interview in the movie was the best.

Besides that, the only other good thing I can say about this film was the slight plot twist which I honestly didn't see coming. Yet I contribute not seeing it coming to the fact that I was too busy focusing on the garbage that was presented in front of me.

The CGI looked like it came straight from SnapChat filters. The "scares" were cheap and dumb. The movie starts off with one, but that doesn't really count and then the rest of the "scares" don't come in until about 53 minutes in. The movie is 98 minutes long. Meaning that it doesn't start the "scares" until about 54% of the way in. From that point on, you can imagine what happens: scares, scares, shaky camera work, lots of running, scares. And of course, because the CGI was completely laughable, not once did I feel scared. My heartbeat didn't even rise.

The one scene that probably infuriated me the most is that they place the camera on the ground to fight one of the monsters and we don't see this happening. Instead, we're shown a shadow puppet theater of it happening. That's right: we see it from the shadows fighting off and stabbing the monster. Seriously? You give us the usual bad shaking camera perspective and then can't even show us what's truly happening.

Just a plain bad film overall. Would not recommend for ANYONE to watch.

Good at times but dreadful ending
careyrhondak23 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I thought it had some good scare scenes, although the character build up was way too long. I think the acting was fair, some were way better actors than others. It had some cool supernatural scenes, but in the end evil won. I was disappointed in that. I was hoping to see God and angels at the end, but no such luck. Evil exists, but so does Good. I felt tricked and let down, just like with the paranormal activity movies. Good stuff, but evil always wins. I think it would have been way better if Good would have one this one.

Gets repetitive!
Biswas_3 October 2021
Film starts off slow first of all. We see the crew preparing for the project and then some random unrelated events happen that only made me feel this film is going nowhere but finally at the 30 min mark, the film gets going.

Found the concept of interviewing some real life monsters to be interesting . Yes, it does become quite interesting with some decent jumpscares until you realize that things start to become repetitive. Monsters running behind the crew and it goes on and on and on!

On top of that , some really bad acting and this Franklin (from GTA V) like dude was so annoying . Some jumpscares were those regular cliches of FF films like a demon face appearing on screen when the crew approaches this white dress girl.

Overall, a film that just manages to keep its toes away from that category of Bad FF horrors . It's between the bad and average category.
