Varaksin manages to protect Lydia from the attacks of Gurtovoi, who suspects her of complicity with Stumpy. Suddenly Varaksin realizes that Stumpy is in love with Lydia, which means that she is in mortal danger. Varaksin manages to save the woman. Lydia sees Varaksin as an outstanding, very reliable and caring man. They begin to get closer. Their relationship does not go unnoticed by Stumpy. He is furious - now Varaksin is a personal enemy for him.
In the vicinity of the town of Arkhipovsk, the head of the local militia disappears under strange circumstances. His assistant, a young militiaman Melnikov, is sure that the chief was killed by a werewolf, the legend of which goes among the locals. However, Sokolov, who was sent from Moscow to investigate this incident, believes that what happened is the work of the Sazon gang, which is operating there. Meanwhile, Varaksin, who remained in Moscow, becomes interested in a strange legend about a werewolf in the Arkhipovsk forests.
Varaksin receives a telegram from Arkhipovsk - Sokolov disappeared without a trace. Arriving and examined the place of Sokolov's disappearance, Varaksin realizes that it was staged. And, therefore, Sokolov may still be alive and is being held hostage by Sazon. Varaksin sets a trap for the bandits and together with the militiamen finds the lair of the Sazonites. But neither the leader nor Sokolov is there. Suddenly, all the pieces of the puzzle come together in Varaksin's head.
A young woman was stabbed in the heart, and a semblance of a carnival mask is painted on her face in blood. The husband of the victim's, the famous lawyer Frolov, is sure this is the work of the maniac-killer Shishkovsky. Once he defended Shishkovsky in court, but he was sentenced to life imprisonment. During the investigation, Frolov's version is confirmed: the fingerprints found at the crime scene coincide with Shishkovsky, whose case was found in the archive. Varaksin does not exclude the appearance of new victims and turns out to be right: soon another girl was killed in the same horrifying way.
Obviously, the killer is after the telephone operators. This confirms the version that the offender is not a maniac, and he has a motive. Soon the detectives come to the alleged killer - this is a certain Yegor Klinkin, nicknamed Wedge, a criminal with great experience. Visiting the telephone exchange, Varaksin suggests that one of the girls overheard some of Klin's conversation and began to blackmail him. And Wedge, not knowing who exactly overheard him, decided to kill everyone who was on duty that night. The version is slim, and the police are focusing on finding Wedge. But when his lair is covered, Wedge is found dead.
An emergency happened in Moscow: one of Dzerzhinsky's closest associates, the squadron commander of the Moscow garrison Dadiani, disappeared without a trace. The case was taken under the special control of the Cheka. To help the police officers, the Chekists send their employee Gurtovoy to the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department. The witness who saw how two men in black leather jackets and caps took Dadiani out of the house, put him in a car and drove away, claims that they were Chekists. MCID people are at an impasse. Soon there is another kidnapping of the prominent Bolshevik Larin. M.O. is the same.
Varaksin, during an investigative experiment, disarmed a militiamen and released a dangerous criminal named the Elder and disappears. The militia and the Cheka issue nationwide alert for him. His act shocked those who knew him from his work in the police. Sokolov, who does not believe in Varaksin's treachery, is conducting his own investigation in order to establish what actually happened. Only MCID's boss Dombergs knew what was going on.
