Marlott visits the dying William Blake who tells him to follow the 'beast with the face of a man' and, through authoress Mary Shelley, gives him a book containing pictures of ritual sacrifice. Helped by local constable Nightingale and grave-robber Pritty Marlott learns of a gang who murder people to sell corpses to surgeons but Pritty reneges on his offer to locate them. Marlott attends an anatomy lesson given by Chester's cousin Garnet which is sabotaged by Bentley Warburton, whom Peel believes is acting out of self-interest. Then Marlott is visited by a girl from Billy's house, Flora, with information about another missing child, Alice Evans.
