Home sweet home
"Castle Sweet Castle's" premise is to me one of Season 5's most relatable ones. Being somebody myself who has always found new environments and any kind of major change hard and very difficult to adjust to initially, and the change that Twilight Sparkle (who so far at this early stage of Season 5 has been very well written and characterised, she really has come on a lot) has to undergo in this episode is really quite huge and understandably very daunting.
After loving Season 5's two part opener "The Cutie Map", expectations were high on first watch for "Castle Sweet Castle" and on the most part they were met. While not one of my favourite episodes of Season 5, when ranking it with the rest of the season it is in the better half in my view. The premise was relatable and to this day "Castle Sweet Castle" is an episode not hard to relate to if you have ever felt like Twilight at any point in your life. While not quite as good as the previous two episodes it is very good.
By all means it isn't flawless. It did drag a little in the middle act.
Was also not particularly crazy about the song "Make This Castle a Home". The melody is not forgettable, though "In Our Town" in the first part of the two parter stuck in my mind more, but with much of the writing being very mature in this episode the childishness of some of the lyrics in the song did stick out like a sore thumb.
There is an awful lot to love about "Castle Sweet Castle" however. Have no isuses with the animation, which is especially terrific with the expressions and the very rich background and drawing detail there was in the climax. The music has character and atmosphere and is dynamic with the action. The writing is neither too simplified or too complex, it's winning in any lighter moments and touching in the more mature moments such as the climax.
Much of the story is great. The pace had flaws in the middle, but the denouement agreed was absolutely beautifully done. Very emotional and so easy to relate to in its delivery of the moral, an important but relevant one. The conflict also has tension and emotional impact.
Loved the characterisation too, so far a wonderful job has been done with Twilight and one of the episode's biggest surprises is how well written Spike is. Love his chemistry with Twilight as well and it was great to see him have presence, and a likeable and in character one at that, and serve a purpose. The voice acting from all is very good, especially from Tara Strong.
Very good episode overall. 8/10
