I don't think Y7
pivotal-6131920 September 2017
This was listed as a Y7 and it had a drug reference, albeit silly. None the less a snake snorting sand in lieu of pollen. Silly but it definitely is a Coke reference. I grew up with underdog popping his super energy pill and Popeye eating spinach to pump up their strength and stamina. I think it's stuff like this that plants the seeds. I am not looking for an argument it's just how I feel about it.

A highly generic animated movie... but....
sebastianali12326 August 2020
A shame honestly, since it had a lot of potential (like a lot of other animated movies), but it ends up wasting it. While there are certain interesting parts such as the tense relationship between Ajar, Pitt and Gary at certain moments in the film, or how beautiful certain animations and places can be, there is not much else to highlight, since the story itself is generic, and also has many plot holes and does not explain certain things such as why dusty and green snakes got on badly. I think it is cliche, but even so, I recommend it to hang out, since some parts that are interesting, but nothing more.

Beautiful, but dumb as rocks
ramstedt040426 May 2017
The saying "All flash, no substance" feels like a perfect descriptor of this movie. The painting-like visuals of this movie are fantastic. The people in charge of that definitely deserve some praise for what they've accomplished. Now if only these people could be paired up with some people that are competent at crafting stories.. Because the story is anything but well-crafted. Most characters are extremely underdeveloped and shallow, with motivations being as flimsy as a leaf in the wind. I don't remember a single character in the movie being the least bit interesting; such utterly forgettable characters.

Give this one a skip unless you're tired and just wanna look at something pretty while you shut your brain off.

Too inappropriate for children and too lame for adults
carolanne44322 March 2018
I watched this movie last night on Netflix out of sheer boredom. I realized too late that I had made a big mistake. For starters, "Sahara" is filled with jokes and visuals unsuitable for a family film. Second, its use of pop culture references and modern music is both unnecessary and excessive. Lastly, the characters are one-dimensional and the story is generic. "Sahara" is by far one of the worst animated films I've seen.

Proved better than ratings suggest!
vstergios17 May 2017
Found this animation by accident and decided to do a little background check on IMDb. Ratings were pretty low but as with most animated films that come to my attention I decided to give it a try and find out by my self.

What I discovered was a classic lower class boy loves and rescues high class girl story, injected with some anti-racist and anti-drug messages, even a subtle but apparent criticism on current political events. Overall I'd go for entertaining with some interesting pointers and blame the low ratings mostly on lack of proper advertisement (practically none... ).

On a final note, those of you inclined to poke the truth out of a pile of words, do take a closer look at those really negative comments and the country they're originating from. Sad to see people prefer walls over peaceful coexistence...

Let's Snort Pollen!
mkvinson6 September 2019
Are you kidding me? This movie is absolutely disgusting. A sorry excuse for an animated movie. A junkie snake literally snorts pollen, among countless other inappropriate references. This is not for children and not even good for adults

Sahara is visually beautiful but otherwise inconsistent
benm-4175129 April 2018
The first thing one notices about Sahara is that it's visually stunning, with an art style that looks high-budget yet sets itself apart from the average CGI flick. Coupled with decent sound design, the film has good production values on the surface.

Unfortunately, the script, storyboarding, and directing fluctuate between decent and cringe-worthy. Sometimes the action can be involving and the humor genuinely funny. But at other times it can be derivative or just plain awkward. The snakes in the film sometimes talk like humans (for example referencing Batman), which at those moments makes the film feel very cheap. Other times they actually steal jokes from other places. Some moments the film just feels clumsy like a demo reel. For example, I almost dozed off during the "climax" of the movie because the action was kind of confusing.

Unfortunately, the writers and directors of the movie missed an opportunity to capitalize on the great production values with a solid script. It felt like someone whipped up the dialogue and refused to have it reviewed by anyone else. That said, it's not a bad movie. It's worth watching if only for the nice animation, and it shows that there is potential for new players in the CGI realm (who aren't from Pixar, Disney, or Dreamworks) to make something great-if they just step it up a little bit more.

Cocaine, sexual harassment, human trafficking
Joanna-Cameron30 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Not suitable for kids.

One snake has a "pollen" addiction...sniffs it to get high.

A female snake is abducted and one (creepy) male snake immediately starts offering unsolicited sexual advances that she clearly feels uncomfortable with.... and to top that off, another snake tells him to back off, but his response is "it's just a joke"... the literal epitome of sexual harassment.

Shortly after, the kidnapped female snake is forced to dance...she appears to be under the influence/hallucinating. Afterwards, she says she couldn't seem to control herself, and is basically dismissed and told to deal with it.

And, of course, the lead main character points out that "he" is the only one who can save the "helpless female" snake.

No thanks.

Voices need to be in France!
Snaffer79820 May 2017
It felt like the characters where acting bad. Which is strange because its a animation. Than I realized It was a France movie, with very very bad English voice overs!. For instance the voice of the main character in English sound like a little boy, but original sound like a real man. I normally prefer English voices but this movie really gets better in original voices. Still not a very good movie but not bad too!

Sorry for my bad English, im Dutch with dislexy.

One MAJOR thing wrong with this movie
codydennison26 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers up ahead* I've heard about this movie from a YouTube reviewer named RaisorBlade, and I've agreed with a lot of what he said in this movie. The animation looks good (even if at times it can be too fast-paced), and the story could've been interesting. Instead, there's a lot of show-don't-tell, some adult themes are put in there inappropriately (such as a pollen fetish), and the characters are forgettable.

But one character is unfortunately unforgettable: Gary. That snake really got on my nerves with his "totally dude!" accent and his blatant disregard of his sister when she's in trouble. Not to mention that he's very whiny and stupid and bratty, and I was rooting for Ajar to actually end him! And when he wants to help rescue his sister near the end of the movie, that came too little, too late. Thus, Gary turns out to be not only the worst character in this movie but also one of the worst characters in animated history.

I do want to like this movie, but there are a number of problems that keep me from doing so. Anyone who likes this movie, that's perfectly fine, but it's definitely not my can of soda.

Found it on Netflix
tofrim12 May 2017
Never heard of it, just put it on cause we couldn't find anything else. It looked like an old movie until we put it on and the animation was really good. The story unfolds a bit slow, but entertaining. Well worth our time. Both me, my gf and our daughter (7 years old) loved it.

I see it gets low review scores here, which is odd, cause it was much better than many of the best animated films this year.

So I'm wondering..why haven't anyone heard of this movie? Whoever tried to promote this movie did a horrible job. Shame on you. It's sad to see only the big animated movies win. If I ever saw a trailer of this movie, I can't remember it. There are many funny characters here too. Really well animated etc. Still, even in the pictures section here on IMDb it's really lacking content. Really strange!

A good movie, but something went really wrong when this came out. Hope those somebody can learn from it and make more movies. It's also probably. One of the first movies that make "the evil" creatures like snakes and scorpions into heroes. That concept would easily look stupid, but this works.

Inconsistent, but well-animated, Sahara is passable entertainment if you have some kids
Upon seeing this film back at 2017 when it came out on Netflix, I was expecting a very groundbreaking animated adventure that would rank to the likes of Pixar and DreamWorks. Unfortunately, what I got was an OK flick with some good visuals but a very underwhelming story. It's not a terrible film, don't get me wrong, but it could've been so much better.

Let's start with the problems. The story has a very nice idea, a movie that takes place in the Sahara desert with a Romeo and Juliet-esque twist. Execution-wise, however, it falls into predictable territory and has cliches we've seen before in other animated films. Not to mention that it does drag somewhat slowly in places. While it does have some bits of funny humor, the script includes some adult references that are way too inappropriate for some viewers. Also, the characters didn't leave an impact to the story and end up being shallow and underdeveloped.

That being said, there are some good things to admire about this film. The voice acting from everyone involved is fairly good especially the English dub (I might want to watch the film in french audio with subtitles someday since this was made by another animation studio in France), the music score fits the setting of the film very well, there are some moments where the action gets very interesting, and the best part is the animation. From the most unique animal designs of the characters to the nicely detailed look of the Sahara desert which makes the film worth watching because of it.

Overall, this film makes for passable entertainment. It doesn't offer much in terms of the story and characters, but it's beautiful animation and a good music score makes this a flawed, but interesting animated movie made from France. If you have kids, give this one a shot. For the adults though, they probably won't get anything out of this.

Felt generic and underwhelming
Lasagna_Kob26 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's about a snake who decides to leave his home, falls in love with a snake from an oasis, is forced to rescue her with her stoner brother, and defeat the incredibly generic villain you probably can't appreciate.

What did it get right? It looks pretty good, and the humor is adult-friendly. (Yeah, I'm the kinda guy that laughs at a snake snort sand because he's in withdrawal)

What did it get wrong? Pretty much everything else in the movie. The characters aren't memorable in the slightest, as they have no back stories or motive, and most of them are simply abandoned after "they had nothing else to offer". Similarly, I'd like to know the main characters better, as the only back story we ever got was from a secondary/support character and the only thing explained were that his parents were killed and he escaped. I'd also like to better know how the other snakes were captured, but no, we just get an ugly "love interest" and a salty character that gets skinned later on. The climax battle scene was dramatic and I had no idea what was happening other than a creepy old dude is able to climb really well, then dies, only to reappear solely for the purpose of a semi-humorous reintroduction of Pitt. (EDIT: I watched it again, and the other snake didn't get skinned, I just missed their reappearance at the end of the movie)

Writing is 1/5 Graphics is 5/5 Humor is 3/5 (i'm being generous, that was a pretty funny scene)

Bizarre
benjaminweber1 May 2018
The animation here is decent and the voice acting is mainly good.

HOWEVER

This is a film about a watermelon-eating cobra teaming up with a substance-abusing green snake to rescue another green snake from a racist caricature. There is a lot that this film gets wrong factually. Some can be attributed to artistic license, but a lot is just laziness. There are also some extremely questionable artistic decisions, such as the aforementioned stoner snake in a children's film, which leads to scenes in which he gets high, and snorts sand in the desert like cocaine. While most of the character design is good, there are a couple of notable exceptions where the character looks disgusting, or where they have clearly copied a character from elsewhere. The plot is okay, but a lot of it feels recycled from previous films, including some extremely cliched set-pieces.

In general, this is not the worst animated film ever. That does not make it good. I'd say put it on for a child then leave the room, but that would teach them that quality does not matter in children's films. Also, the drugs-based humour probably needs a responsible adult to put into context for them. Instead, put on a good film for your child, like Shrek or Chicken Run.

Incorrect actors?
girls_rule_lots17 June 2017
Quite liked the movie- was good to watch when didn't really feel like watching anything at all. Obviously not as good as the higher children's movies but not bad considering- might even watch again.

My comment is just about the credits at the end The movie lists different actors to what it does on here?

Thanks

Not suitable for kids and just a general waste of time
felicitypayne9 May 2018
The main lady snakes brother is a drug addict!! One scene he is hallucinating from heat stroke/ withdrawal and he thinks the sand is "pollen" so he makes a line of it and snorts it with one nostril!! The rest of the movie with his scenes are pretty much just watching him try to score pollen or talk about how much he needs this drug. Its completely inappropriate given the pg rating which seems to be the standard for netflix originals. The rest of the movie is boring as hell and i dont get where they are coming from calling it heart warming.

Do you like movies with bad dialogue, no plot, glaring sexism and obvious attempts to mimic the Pixar formula? This movie is for you! If not - forget it. Totally not worth it.

Visually it look great, but script is outdated
robinhio84_21 June 2022
The concept is great, but the whole damsel in distress is just not doing it anymore today. Surprisingly the first part is worst than the second part. The movie actually gets much better after 45min

It looks great, but it lacks originality and strong characters. Rita is great and a backstory on her would probably be a good reason to make a spin off and do this right.

The comic relief character, Gary however is unbearably annoying, and the English voice actor makes it worst.

Some other odd choices are a snorting snake and a rap American gangsta song under a North African battle, whilst it could have been a highlight

And then there's a Bugs Bunny homage/rip off character, which it's a nice eater egg.

Overall I do think a sequel would be good, just with some new and original ideas.

Funny Netflix movie
belzncube15 May 2017
A really funny movie, that I stumbled upon on Netflix. This is a funny animation with great characters. It is a shame that it does not seem to have hit the big screens or have great reviews, however I believe this animation movie is better than some animations that have received great reviews. If you want to relax and have a laugh this is the movie to watch.

Inappropriate for Kids *Spoilers*
gericagroh5 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is obviously aimed at kids and I feel like they tried to throw in some adult themes to keep the adults entertained as well, but it went horribly wrong. It's extremely inappropriate. The animation and the basic story line is good and my 2 year old son enjoys watching it for now, but I will not allow him to watch it once he starts understanding. The brother snake has a "pollen" addiction which strongly resembles a cocaine addiction. Meanwhile the girl snake, Eva, has been forced into snake dancing, which to me, too closely resembles being forced into prostitution. She seems to be in some sort of trance or drugged and not able to resist dancing. There's even one part where she's seeing some weird hallucinations and a bunch of snakes are slithering towards a large sun and burrow into it, but the way they present it looks exactly like sperm burrowing into an egg. On top of that, the leader of the snake dancers talks about the girls being too fat and to tie their stomach in knot to lose weight. As if girls don't have enough body image issues as it is. This could've been a great movie if they had left out all the inappropriate themes. The only reason I gave it a 2 instead of a 1 is because the animation is actually pretty good.

This movie is **not** for children!
shykara31 August 2017
This has way too much sexual innuendo, sexual references, and scene upon scene of drug references. This is in no way, shape, or form appropriate for children. There are no spoilers in this review. I'm only offering that this is not appropriate for children of any age. This movie, abundant with sexual and drug references, should be 18 and up. The references aren't even subtle as with some cartoons, where there is a touch of adult humor thickly veiled. In this movie, they don't even try to cover up the drugs and sex.

Beautiful visual aesthetic and character design with lackluster animation and lazy writing
triphop-287207 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My bf and I had watched this film on Netflix and were left severely disappointed. While the film's overall aesthetic was beautiful with very cute and stylized character designs for the various animals and people, the animation and overarching plot was less admirable.

*Spoilers Ahead*

The "romances" aren't fleshed out and are completely tropey and cliché. The main snakes, Ajarand Eve(a?) fall in love after speaking for two minutes, with the Ajar willing to cross the desert to save her after getting taken by a snake charmer; they barely know each others names. Ajar puts his best friend, Pitt The scorpion and Eve's brother Gary in harm's way constantly because he became infatuated, then gets mad at them for not wanting to put their lives in danger for her. Thats dumb, it would have made more sense to have Gary, her brother, want to save her and ask for Ajar's help while focusing on their friendship as two opposing snakes develop instead of a lazy love story, or have Ajar and Eve set out to save Gary and actually developed their romance. It's all just poorly executed.

Another pointless plot device is that the snakes are divided by "race" ie the green snakes are considered superior and beautiful while the venomous snakes are referred to as "dustys". It also doesn't help that the dusty all have traditionally northern African names while the green snakes have traditionally English names. It's also just a plot point that doesn't actually end up mattering less than a quarter through and it just trivializes actual racial diaspora faced by groups today. Like if the point was to show that you shouldn't judge based on skin color, then there should have been more moments of the green snakes realizing that their way of thinking is wrong and trying to dismantle that stigma among the other green snakes, but they never acknowledge how bigoted they are, they don't even really apologize for the things they say to Ajar, so it becomes a moot point.

There's references to drug addiction; while one snake is addicted to snorting pollen (referencing cocaine addiction), he acts as someone who has smoked weed, which doesn't make sense, and he even goes into withdrawal at one point, because addiction is funny And appropriate for children's films apparently.

The characters aren't fleshed out at all and rely on running gags to keep them relevant; ie Ajar hasn't molted his skin before and is a dusty, Pitt keeps stinging himself which makes him sleep, Gary is addicted to pollen and has a "surfer dude" dialect, Eve is pretty (for a snake I guess?) And that's all you get from them in terms of character development.

Another issue with the plot is that there are random references to popular culture sprinkled throughout that aren't done in a witty way, so it breaks the immersion in a jolting way. Why would a bunch of snakes be aware of celebrities or things going on in the west? A good reference in a movie is acknowledgable not confusing.

The plot just has a lot of things going on at once with nothing actually substantial happening, so you just feel like you've wasted an hour and twenty minutes watching nothing happen.

As for the animation, it was okay, but the snake dance battle was just dumb and cringey. They were supposed to be break dancing but they don't have arms or legs so its hard to tell what they're doing and it just looks silly.

I still love the look and character designs of the movie though, it's the only thing that kept me interested, but I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone.
