A wonderfully crafted and insightful documentary on the individuals, and the magic of Mayfair
'Welcome to Mayfair' explores the riches and wealth that lies within an area, renowned for its extravagant spending and expensive goods. Not wholly in the sense of money and the value of items, such as the seven thousand pound swimming trunks encrusted with 24 carat gold, the documentary reveals the richness in characters that are hidden in this 'village'. James Rogan, wonderfully delves into the 'inner sanctum' of the glossy windows and flawless shops to explore a dying trade and fine craft such as G.J Cleverley , bespoke shoemakers, a uniqueness of Mayfair and to London, where the art of long hours and many months of hand crafting is, to many, a thing of the past.
The documentary explores the different sides of Mayfair, through a 'cabbie' that lives in the local council homes, who also goes on cruise ship holidays, teaching old ladies to dance. Whilst another, "the number one estate agent in the world" selling multi-million pound mansions, who smokes cigars at Sautter and "decides how this world is run". It celebrates the community spirit of 'Mayfairlites' and the magic that is cast upon the area.
James Rogan highlights the history of some of the local businesses, showing the warmth and charm of an Italian café, which has been run by an Italian husband and wife, for over 50 years, along with a wonderful flower shop which has been in Mayfair for decades. Unfortunately their personal and romantic stories are overshadowed by the fate of closing down, and the question as to whether soon, Mayfair will no more be an area of uniqueness, and fall into the capitalist trap.
