DEUTSCHLAND 83 "Bold Guard" (2015)

DEUTSCHLAND 83 is cold war television series made in Germany. The 8 episodes are set in 1983 during the height of the sabre rattling between the West and the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Stuck in the middle are the two Germany's, East and West. This is the seventh episode of the series.

Jonas Nay plays an East German border officer who is seconded into the East German Stasi. The Foreign Intelligence section needs a body to slip into West Germany to spy on a German General. The man, Ulrich Noethen, is in charge of working with his American counterpart to set up Pershing Missile sites.

In this episode the East German Intelligence section and their Soviet masters are becoming concerned over NATO radio traffic etc. They are convinced that NATO is planning a first strike against them. This they believe is why the West Germans have allowed the US Army to move Pershing tactical nuclear missiles in country.

They want their agent, Nay, to look into the matter. Nay does this and realizes that the East Germans and the Soviets are over reacting to a NATO war game. The Reds think the war game is really a cover for a first strike move. Nay breaks cover and calls his contact at Stasi headquarters. The problem here is that the Reds have convinced themselves that the threat is real, and Nay is ignored.

Nay decides that the only way to prevent the balloon from going up is to come clean with his West German commander, Noethen. Needless to say this goes sideways, forcing Nay to hotfoot it in order to avoid being tossed into a cell. He beats the feet and heads back for East German. He tunes in the radio hoping that the nuclear situation does not come to a head.

This is the second episode in a row where the writers seem to have lost the thread. There are too many sub plots going this way and that with several loose ends from earlier episodes being unresolved. Hopefully the next episode ties these up.

Again, the look of the episode is great even if the story is jumbled.
