DEUTSCHLAND 83 "Brandy Station" (2015)

DEUTSCHLAND 83 is cold war television series made in Germany. The 8 episodes are set in 1983 during the height of the sabre rattling between the West and the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Stuck in the middle are the two Germany's, East and West. This is the sixth episode of the series.

Jonas Nay plays an East German border officer who is seconded into the East German Stasi. The Foreign Intelligence section needs a body to slip into West Germany to spy on a German General. The man, Ulrich Noethen, is in charge of working with his American counterpart to set up Pershing Missile sites.

In this episode, East German operative, Jonas Nay is recovering is an East German hospital. He has donated a kidney to his mother and needs some bed rest. In West Germany, the Army believes that Nay was in an automobile accident. This is to explain his absence from duty with the General, Noethen.

Nay has decided he is finished with life as a spy. That is till he is visited by his pregnant girlfriend, Sonja Gerhardt. Gerhardt is having her arm twisted by the East German Stasi. They want her to talk Nay into returning to the West to continue his work. When this fails to work, Stasi officer, Sylvester Groth pays a call and "strongly suggests" it would be in his best interests to return to work. Nay sees the error of his ways and agrees to return to West Germany.

At the same time, West German General Noethen is having a spot of bother with his son, Ludwig Trepte. The lad has decided to strike a blow for the peace movement he has joined. He kidnaps American General Jackson (Errol Trotman- Harewood) and forces him to record a video admitting that the US intends to launch a first strike against the East Bloc.

Needless to say this plan goes sideways in a hurry with several bodies being left at the scene. Now the West German Security section is in play looking for why Trepte is AWOL from his Army base.

The writers here have overplayed their hand with this plot line. After several nice twists and turns in the first few episodes, they seem to be heading for a train-wreck story wise. Still worth a watch just to see where the plot is going. The acting and look of the episodes is excellent with a big screen feel to the entire production.
