DEUTSCHLAND 83 "Cold Fire" (2015)

DEUTSCHLAND 83 is cold war television series made in Germany. The 8 episodes are set in 1983 during the height of the sabre rattling between the West and the Soviet Eastern Bloc. Stuck in the middle are the two Germany's, East and West. This is the fifth episode of the series.

Jonas Nay plays an East German border officer who is seconded into the East German Stasi. The Foreign Intelligence section needs a body to slip into West Germany to spy on a German General. The man, Ulrich Noethen, is in charge of working with his American counterpart to set up Pershing Missile sites.

In this episode, East German operative, Jonas Nay has had enough of being a spy. He intends to tell the East German Stasi to get stuffed. He has a wild night of booze and sex with Noethen's daughter, Lisa Tomaschewsky. He tells her that he is really an agent of the East Germans. This just gets a smile and a laugh from the girl. She knows he is the aide de camp to her Army General father.

At the same time, her brother, Ludwig Trepte, has fallen for a gay honey trap set up by the East Germans. Trepte has been taken in by the leader of a Peace group. (Who is of course really a Stasi agent) Now Nay is recalled to East Berlin by his handler and aunt, Maria Schrader. It turns out that his mother has collapsed and needs a new kidney. Nay is the perfect donor.

Nay is sent back with a package to deliver to a West Berlin address before crossing into East Berlin. The package turns out to be part of a bomb that is set off by the infamous "Carlos the Jackal". Now there is a chase through the Berlin underground with Nay killing the bomber. (The story really calls for the viewer to have a certain amount of suspension of disbelief here) Anyways, Nay makes it through customs and gets to the hospital in time to help his mother. The General's son Trepte has now decided to offer his services to the East Germans. He thinks that as a serving West German officer this will help the Peace Movement.

It is an entertaining series even if they are starting to pack a few more story lines than is needed in.
