Written by Yū Sasuga and illustrated by Kenichi Tachibana, the Terraformars manga has undoubtedly become a cult classic series and one of the foremost seinen titles in history. And while the series never became a mainstream work, the fandom of the Terraformars series is a loyal and large one. While most fans will know the series thanks to the anime adaptation, Terraformars is actually an ongoing manga series, a fact many fans are not aware of. Fans of the series will know that the Terraformars series has been on a hiatus for the last five years, but we are happy to confirm that the series is finally returning on April 4, 2024.
The Terraformars manga debuted on January 13, 2011, in the Miracle Jump magazine, but moved to Weekly Young Jump in 2012. It had been published continuously until December 2018, when it went on an indefinite hiatus following 22 published volumes. The reason given then was Sasuga’s health,...

Probably the most popular new shonen anime this year so far, “Hell's Paradise” follows the rules of the samurai/ninja category, but also functions as a homage (takes many loans if your prefer) from a number of other famous titles (not just anime), which, in combination with a series of other aspects, makes it quite unique.

Considering that the homonymous manga has sold over 14 million copies, its adaptation into anime (and eventually live action) was to be expected with Liden Films and Tyo Animations taking up the task eventually. Let us see how they fared.
The generic, scif-fi/exploitation story takes place in 2619 Ad, and revolves around a group of people who volunteered to undergo surgeries that gave them the abilities of insects or other animals, and to embark on a mission to Mars, in order to collect samples from the planet. These samples will presumably aid in finding a cure for a virus that came from Mars and is now threatening the whole populace of Earth. If things were not already complicated, the cause of the virus is a 500-year project to terraform Mars by sending cockroaches and algae there, with the former transforming into hulking brutes with at least some intelligence,...

Another Decade with Takashi Miike is a series of essays on the 2010 films of the Japanese maverick, following Notebook's earlier survey of Miike's first decade of the 21st century.Jim Emerson once wrote that Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom tells you how to watch it in its first shot. By a similar token, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable - Chapter 1 (2017) tells you how to watch it with its very title. Making sense of its three parts requires either familiarity with the manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (or its anime adaptation) or a willingness to do some work as a spectator. Diamond Is Unbreakable is the name of the fourth story arc of the JoJo manga; it was originally serialized from 1992 to 1995. It speaks to Miike’s love of—and entrenchment in—cartoon media that he’d choose not to adapt the first story of this long-running...

Another Decade with Takashi Miike is a series of essays on the 2010 films of the Japanese maverick, following Notebook's earlier survey of Miike's first decade of the 21st century.Takashi Miike could have become the idea of himself held by many Americans and gotten rich doing it, but his career was always his own. After he indulged one last time in the uncomplicated thrill of homicide-as-spectacle in 13 Assassins (2010), he’d never spill blood the same way. In Miike’s films of the last decade, violence became the director’s way of working through feelings about a world ruled by a rotting morality. Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011), Lesson of the Evil (2012), As the Gods Will (2014), and Terra Formars (2016) all reckon with the problems of believing in some greater power or logic, and their findings are bleak. If teachers, gods, governments, and alien life aren’t looking out for us,...

Filmmakers have made the case that, instead of going to film school, young would-be directors might be better off just listening to director commentaries. And if that’s the educational route you’ve chosen, two of today’s most interesting directors are telling all on new Blu-ray releases. Want to know more about how Barry Jenkins brought James Baldwin’s powerful novel “If Beale Street Could Talk” (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment) to the big screen, or how Karyn Kusama crafted the bleak neo-noir “Destroyer” (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment)? During the 21st century, scientists decided to make Mars a planet that could be inhabited in the future. The solution they came up with was to terraform its ground by spreading special algae with the help of cockroaches that would spread the substance all over the planet. Now, in 2577, they realize that the cockroaches have mutated into anthropomorphous, extremely strong and fast monsters. The government decides to send an exterminating team, which fails miserably (the script does not refer much to them). Due to this, they assign a half-crazy scientist named Ko Honda, to assemble a team that can carry the task, and to give them a chance of success,...

A full trailer has been released for Takashi Miike's new fantasy/martial arts film Blade of the Immortal, and it's completely badass! The story is set during the mid-Tokugawa Shogunate period, and it centers on an immortal swordsman "who will not be able to lift his curse of everlasting life until 1000 evildoers feel the cut of his steel". In the process, he ends up protecting a young girl who happens to have some wicked fighting skills of her own.

Next in Takashi Miike‘s long line of releases is Terra Formars, a future-set manga adaptation that involves travel to Mars, terraforming (you could’ve guessed that one), corporate greed, and battles with cockroach-like alien creatures — all of which can be gleaned from a subtitle-free trailer released in advance of a Japanese opening this April. While there’s really no telling how the director’s latest outing will come together, we’ve always known this much: cinema is a language, and never more so than when Rinko Kikuchi dons battle armor.

Terra Formars will open in Japan on April 29 and is currently without U.S. distribution.

Terra Formars
Director: Takashi Miike
Writer: Kazuki Nakashima
Given his mindboggling output, it would be strange not to have a most anticipated list not featuring Japanese auteur Takashi Miike, who usually has several projects premiering during any given year. As far as we can tell, he only has one title scheduled for release in 2016, the intriguing Terra Formers, a live action manga adaptation which sounds an awful lot like Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997). Humans deposit some moss and cockroaches on Mars in hopes of fostering an inhabitale environment for later use on the Red Planet. In the year 2599, they return to find a species of dangerous humanoid cockroaches. The production is the first Japanese film to shoot in Iceland. A cast headlined by Rinko Kikuchi (Babel; Pacific Rim) has us even more excited for what sounds like one of Miike’s most extravagantly gonzo creations yet.
