At the height of The Office's run on Netflix, a Bustle article exploring why people are rewatching the Office posited that people sometimes need to turn their brains off with comfort viewing. The psychological benefits can be enough to get people out of suicidal-level despair.
I tend to think that every time we plop down in front of a TV after a hard day, we're all confronted with a choice of whether we want comfort or to be challenged and moved at a more rewarding level.
But with Night Court -- purest vanilla comfort food there's ever been -- there's an art to doing mindless popcorn comedy.
This show will never be a great comedy at a dialogue level because the jokes are too rapid-fire.
Ordinarily, that's a good thing, but with Night Court, it's like an overeager teacher's pet that rockets their hands up in the air to...

It's not exactly been a banner year for superhero movies thus far in 2023. "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" kicked off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with something of a whimper. What's more, it looks to go down as the lowest-grossing entry in the "Ant-Man" franchise to date, despite being billed as a major "Avengers"-level event. Now, DC finds itself in an unenviable position as well thanks to "Shazam! Fury of the Gods," which has bombed badly in its first two weekends. The difference in this case, however, is that we may be looking at one of the biggest flops of the year, superhero movie or otherwise.
"Fury of the Gods" fell off a cliff in its second frame this past weekend, as "John Wick: Chapter 4" took the lion's share of the ticket sales, grossing $73.5 million. The "Shazam!" sequel dropped 67.8%, bringing in a mere $9.7 million and falling to...

To say The Office made Jenna Fischer’s career isn’t an understatement. Fischer herself has revealed that she was ready to quit acting and gave herself one more year, during which she won the role of Pam. During her struggling time, Fischer also reveals that Alyson Hannigan was the most frequent competition she came up against.

Brian Baumgartner reran Fischer’s appearance on his Off the Beat podcast on March 7. During their conversation she described her many run-ins with Hannigan.
Jenna Fischer vs. Alyson Hannigan before ‘The Office’
Both The Office and How I Met Your Mother began in 2005. Prior to that, Fischer reveals that Hannigan was always the first choice in her auditions. Only The Office wasn’t looking for a star.

Fatboy Slim has showed his support for Match of the Day host Gary Lineker during a live performance.
The presenter has become embroiled in a row over impartiality after comparing the language used to launch a new government asylum policy to 1930s Germany on Twitter.
On Friday (10 March), the BBC announced that Lineker would take a break from presenting the highlights programme until an “agreed and clear position” on his use of social media had been reached.
You can follow The Independent’s live blog here.
DJ Fatboy Slim – real name Norman Cook – was performing at Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse later on Friday when he made his support for Lineker known.

Anime scored again at the box office last weekend, and that’s not just counting the anime-influenced “Creed III.” Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba — To the Swordsmith Village” earned $10.1 million in its domestic debut. Its initial success is another example of how anime has become a reliable and bankable genre in times of theatrical feast and multiplex famine.
In pre-covid times, such specialty films commanding relatively modest box office would be curiosities alongside tentpoles and conventional studio programmers, with a mere appearance in the weekend top 10 becoming noteworthy in and of itself. But now, out-of-the-ordinary big-screen experiences are finding favor with audiences, with exhibitors gratefully turning to anything with a loyal fan base they can count on to show up at theaters.

ABC has formally ordered a comedy pilot based on the BAFTA-winning BBC series Motherland.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper will topline the pilot, titled Drop-Off, from Lionsgate Television — which owns worldwide rights to Motherland — and ABC Signature. The originals’s creators, Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh and Helen Serafinowicz, are among the executive producers, as is Kemper. Julieanne Smolinski (ABC’s Home Economics) is writing and exec producing the pilot, and Michael Showalter (The Dropout) will direct.
Drop-Off will follow Julia (Kemper), a working mom for whom nothing is working, so she goes looking for her village. With the help of new friends Calvin and Liz, Julia discovers she just might succeed at balancing work and parenting from time to time.
Motherland has aired three seasons on BBC Two (it streams on AMC+ in the United States) and won the BAFTA Award for best scripted comedy last year.

As last-minute preparations and rehearsals were busily taking place at the Dolby Theatre for this Sunday’s 95th annual Academy Awards, I was able to carve out some time with AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer on Wednesday to talk about the show, handling potential crisis situations, continuing controversies about Oscar campaigning and social media, plus the future of the broadcast with ABC and the Dolby Theatre venue, where it has taken place for several years.
He was in a very upbeat mood about what he was seeing so far in his first year as CEO — so involved with the Oscar show with new Academy President Janet Yang and what they hope will be somewhat of a return to Oscar’s former glory. It’s been a rough couple of years that saw the broadcast deeply affected by the pandemic and then the infamous Will Smith-Chris Rock slap, which we also talk about,...

Steve Carell is the latest star of “The Office” to appear on “Office Ladies”, the podcast hosted by fellow “Office” alums Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey.
During the conversation, the former co-stars discussed the show’s mockumentary style, which involved self-referential glances directly into the camera — something that Carell conceded he had some difficulty setting aside after his exit from the show.
“I have never had a job where I didn’t look into the camera at some point,” he admitted.

Few shows have been as relatable to our everyday experience as the American version of The Office when it debuted in 2005 on NBC. Over the years, characters were flanderized and toned down in keeping with network notes.
But not Jim. The prank-loving protagonist with a hole in his heart for the cute receptionist represented the ideal audience surrogate for us. He wasn't too attached to the workings of Dunder Mifflin and invited us to laugh at all the silliness in his vicinity.
But I'd like to present an alternative theory: Maybe Jim wasn't the real protagonist of the Office. Maybe it was Ryan.
Although The Office ended up being about a found family in the workplace, it's important to note that it did not start out that way. The general gist of the Dunder Mifflin world at first was that it was a typical American workplace and certainly not one that could inspire passion.

Bj Novak reminisced about his “tumultuous” relationship with ex-girlfriend Mindy Kaling at Sunday’s (26 February) Producers Guild Awards.
Before presenting his former Office co-star with the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television, Novak honoured Kaling for her incredible writing talents, which he said were guided by her “passionate” and “unstoppable” opinions.
“The first thing I first noticed about Mindy in [The Office] writer’s room is that she cared so much about everything,” Novak recalled. “Whether Jim and Pam should kiss, the philosophical limits of Dwight’s loyalty to Michael, exactly how many seconds Kevin would roll around in his spilt chilli.
“And it went beyond the show,” he continued. “She cared about all the issues of the day. About Beyoncé vs Rihanna, about BlackBerries vs iPhones, about whether You’ve Got Mail should be in the Criterion Collection.”

Tom Cruise was honoured for his nearly three decades of work as a producer, and “ Everything Everywhere All at Once ” solidified its status as the frontrunner for the best picture Oscar by taking the top prize at Saturday night’s Producers Guild of America Awards.
“We love you! We love you!” another Oscar favorite and one of the film’s stars, Ke Huy Quan, shouted gleefully from the stage as Jonathan Wang and the other producers of the multiversal dramedy accepted the award for best theatrical motion picture.
The award has proven to be perhaps the best indicator for what will win the top honour at the Oscars, with four of the past five and 11 of the past 14 PGA winners going on to win best picture.
PGA wins by “ Coda ” last year and “ Nomadland ” in 2021 set each apart as frontrunners before winning best picture.

Pinocchio was the first winner of the night, presented by Hacks‘ Hannah Einbinder, as del Toro noted it was “a fantastic year for animation, every artist in this category is trying to push it,” once again emphasizing that animation is an art form for audiences beyond children.

Prime Video has become one of the more underrated streamers when compared to Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and its other competitors. While Amazon’s streamer boasts big titles like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Boys, it does, however, lack the abundance of content that the other major players in the streaming game possess. Prime Video isn’t lacking in originality, though. When it does release a new series, you can expect it will typically be able to carve out a niche in its genre of choice.

Based on the novel by acclaimed horror writer Bentley Little, this eight-episode first season created by Tony Basgallop (Servant) has largely been marketed as a black comedy by Amazon and various media outlets in the months before release. It came as no surprise when Party Down was cancelled. The year was 2010, and the scrappy, glowingly reviewed sitcom about an LA catering company had languished in obscurity for 20 episodes before finally calling it quits. Its paltry viewing figures – dipping as low as 68,000 US viewers for one episode – didn’t help. Nor did the fact that the Starz network was still in its unsteady early days of original programming. To cap this off, Party Down had already seen one cast member, Jane Lynch, leave at the end of season one; the end of season two would see lead Adam Scott poached by Parks and Recreation on NBC. So, all things considered, cancellation was somewhat inevitable. Its revival, though? That’s another story. The six new episodes of Party Down – released weekly on Starz in the US and Lionsgate+ in the UK, beginning this Friday – seemed, for a long time, a mere pipedream.

For the third weekend in a row, a new film sits atop the box-office weekend. This weekend, Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania easily took top honors as it bested the second-place film by an astonishing $97.9 million.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania debuted with $104.0 million to show for its first three days in release as it handily took first place. Holding steady in a very distant second-place was Avatar: The Way of Water with $6.1 million. This brings the James Cameron film to an astounding ten-week total of $657.1 million. These two behemoths pushed last weekend’s top film, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, to third place with $5.4 million over the weekend, giving the film a two-week total of $18.0 million. Climbing two spots to finish in fourth place over the weekend was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which, in its ninth week of release, brought in $5.3 million to raise its overall total to $166.1 million.

Yes, it’s finally happened. Fawlty Towers is getting a reboot.
For decades, the very idea seemed unthinkable. Running for 12 episodes (two series of six episodes apiece) in 1975 and 1979, John Cleese and Connie Booth’s Torquay-set comedy was a paragon of restraint. From the writing through to the performances, it was bottled lightning. Each episode was a classic. And then, after 1979, it was gone. No more. Decades later, the series would still be widely celebrated for this “quit while you’re ahead” philosophy. Ricky Gervais, for instance, has often compared the decision to endThe Office after two series to the precedent set by Cleese. To some extent, Fawlty Towers came to embody the UK’s entire attitude towards TV, establishing one of its golden rules: less is more.
And yet, on Tuesday, it was announced that Cleese would be returning to the character of Basil Fawlty, in a new series created alongside his daughter,...

The Office paved the way for many other “documentary style” TV comedies. It was based on the British format, and shows like Trailer Park Boys predate the American Office too. But, the success of The Office meant shows like Parks and Recreation or Modern Family could get away with it on broadcast. The creators of the American The Office said they were inspired by reality TV.

Warner Bros. Discovery to Keep Discovery+ Standalone in Addition to Launching Combo HBO Max Streamer
Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. will keep Discovery+ as its own streaming offering in addition to launching the upcoming combined HBO Max/Discovery+ platform, an individual with knowledge tells TheWrap.

Rather than combining both streamers in their entirety, the new platform will feature HBO Max content and most Discovery+ content. Discovery+ will remain available as a stand-alone option at a lower price.

It only took eight weeks, but Avatar: The Way of Water is no longer the top film at the box office. M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin and the award-winning ladies of 80 for Brady both managed to top James Cameron's sequel, though not with any overwhelming numbers. It only took eight weeks, but Avatar: The Way of Water is no longer the top film at the box office. M. It’s easy to root for “Abbott Elementary.”
In its first season, Quinta Brunson’s series established itself as both a big-hearted and sweet-natured half-hour and as a sign of life for the network comedy. Rooted both in the office-comedy genre that’s as old as the medium and in the 21st-century custom of the mockumentary, “Abbott” has been a sharp and strong argument for traditional forms. Brunson’s Emmy win for writing the show’s pilot came both as the welcome celebration of a new talent and as no surprise.
And the first two episodes of the show’s second season continue its strong trajectory. The school came into a windfall in the previous season, and the decision of how to disburse it hangs over the proceedings. This is an elegant way to deploy both halves of “Abbott’s” emotional equation: The show’s teachers know that they are...

New Delhi, Sep 3 (Ians) Cyber-security researchers have identified a unique attack where hackers are exploiting a hugely popular deep space image taken from NASA’s James Webb telescope to infiltrate computers with malware.
A newly-discovered hacking campaign is exploiting an image from the James Webb Telescope to infect targets with malware.
In July, James Webb produced the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date, known as the ‘First Deep Field’.
Now, Securonix Threat research team has identified a persistent Golang-based attack campaign, that incorporates an equally interesting strategy by leveraging the deep field image taken from the James Webb and obfuscated Golang (or Go) programming language payloads to infect the target system with the malware.
Golang-based malware is on the rise gaining popularity with Apt hacking groups such as Mustang Panda.
Go is an open-source programming language developed in 2007 by Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike, and Ken Thompson at Google.

Comedy's a tricky genre. Sometimes, the jokes seem to come naturally. But other times, it's more effective to create a scene that's so cringe-worthy that tension builds until you can't help but laugh just to break it. Few shows execute the latter better than "The Office," especially when the self-proclaimed world's best boss, Michael Scott (Steve Carell), is on screen.
A bumbling and incompetent (yet well-intentioned) regional manager, Michael is the awkward heart and soul that drives the earlier seasons of the show, setting such a high standard that Carell himself is hesitant to return to the role. More often than not, Michael makes an idiot of himself — much to viewers' simultaneous amusement and horror. But there are more than a few times when the boss simply goes too far. Who could forget the sexual harassment training seminar that Michael hijacked, only to slut-shames the actress in the training video?...

With two weekends left in the summer box office season, the numbers are clear: Gross receipts are down about 23 from 2019 levels — which means that there was significant recovery from the pandemic, but still not enough to stave off crisis for many movie theater chains.
The final summer 2022 domestic total is set to finish at approximately 3.37 billion, down from the 4.34 billion seen in 2019, according to estimates by Comscore.
The good news is that several of the top summer blockbusters performed closer to pre-pandemic baselines than analysts like The-Numbers.com founder Bruce Nash expected. Based on comparisons to 2017-2019 films, tentpoles like Disney/Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (411.3 million domestic/953.9 million WW), Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” (373.8 million domestic/984 million WW) and Disney’s “Thor: Love & Thunder” (332 million domestic/732 million WW) grossed roughly 80-90 of what he estimated they would have made in a pre-pandemic market.

New Delhi, Aug 16 (Ians) The number of exploits for vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Office suite increased, accounting for 82 per cent of the total number of exploits across different platforms and software, such as Adobe Flash, Android, Java etc in the second quarter (Q2) of 2022, a report said on Tuesday.
According to a report by Kaspersky, old versions of applications remain the main targets for attackers, with almost 547,000 users in total being affected through corresponding vulnerabilities in the last quarter.
Moreover, the number of users affected by the Microsoft Mshtml Remote Code Execution vulnerability, which was previously spotted in targeted attacks, skyrocketed eight times.
“Since the vulnerability is quite easy to use, we expect an increase in its exploitation. Criminals craft malicious documents and convince their victims to open them through social engineering techniques,” Alexander Kolesnikov, malware analyst at Kaspersky, said in a statement.
“The Microsoft Office application then downloads and executes a malicious script.

The cult of "The Office" has only grown stronger since it debuted in 2005. It's hard to picture these days, but "The Office" was one of those shows that took a minute to find its audience, but when it did it found a very vocal, very dedicated fanbase. There are a dozen questions people still have about the show. You know, things like "What is Kevin's chili recipe?" and "Is that really what she said?" But at the top of the burning questions list is something very romantic and very secretive.
Jim and Pam spent an agonizingly long time figuring out they were soul mates and an early bold move by Jim happened in the season 2 episode "Christmas Party" when Jim wrote a note to Pam and hid it in a teapot that he was gifting her. Spoiler Alert Warning: This podcast talks about the ending of Focus Features’ Vengeance.
In an industry where smaller films are sidelined to streaming, and making theatrical films even harder, 5x Primetime Emmy The Office nominee B.J. Novak headed to the one oasis where he knew he could make Vengeance, his feature directorial debut: Jason Blum.
“(He) has a workaround, his own lane,” Novak tells us on the latest episode of Crew Call which you can listen to below:
“He takes small budget bets on first time filmmakers and gives them a lot of control, no money upfront,” expounds Novak on the Blumhouse strategy, “They did take a bet on me.”
Focus Features released Vengeance last Friday and to date it’s grossed 2.2M at 998 theaters.
Novak had been kicking around the idea for Vengeance since as early as 2014, the conceit being “someone in a shallow life who is pulled out...

John Krasinski spent many years cementing himself in our hearts as a lovable, floppy-haired paper salesman on "The Office," but now that goodwill is being questioned. Again, the marquee debut of the weekend claimed the top spot over the box-office weekend as Dune knocked Halloween Kills from the top spot after only one week.
The first of a two-part series, Dune, took in $40.1 million in its first weekend of release. Although that return was less-than-stellar for the sci-fi epic’s opening weekend, it still boasts an impressive $220.7 million worldwide total that has allowed Part Two of the series to be green lit. Beneath the briny, where Davy Jones’ Locker is home to the bodies of thousands of dead sailors who lost their lives on the high seas, there be treasure. Frank Wild (Stanley Tucci) has never let go of his boyhood dreams of roaming the world turning up buried jewels and ships’ figureheads and letting pieces of eight run through his light fingers, although he has come up with some distinctly adult ploys to make that possible. Are they legal? Perhaps extra-legal would be the right expression. Think black ops. At the very least, there are some shady characters involved, the kinds of people captured by long lenses in police investigations.

You better dust off your Dundie and grab your World's Best Boss mug, because a reboot of The Office is possibly on the horizon. On Monday, Aug. 23, Susan Rovner, Chairman for Entertainment Content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, weighed in on the idea of rebooting the beloved NBC comedy. In a world of reboots, spin-offs and reimaginations, The Office remains one of the most vaunted.
The launch of NBCUniversal streamer Peacock and the company’s $500M deal to get the rights back from Netflix to the Steve Carrell-fronted adaptation of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s comedy put the idea of a reboot back in focus.
NBCU content chief Susan Rovner today told Deadline that “whenever Greg Daniels wants to do one, we’re standing by”.
Rovner, who is Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, was speaking to Deadline at the Edinburgh International TV Festival. In a panel session, she initially said “no comment” to the question of plans for a reboot, before adding that it was up to Daniels, who developed the NBC adaptation.
It comes after NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said in January that The Office was being more actively streamed on Peacock than it had been on Netflix.
