In the wake of his bereavement Tommy has to deal with family in-fighting, in which he is helped by Polly before setting off to Wales to meet a gypsy lady. She tells him that the sapphire given him by Grand Duke Leo as part payment and worn by Grace on the fateful night is cursed and should not be worn again.
