In the world of "Carnival Row," the Continent of Tirnanoc is the original land of the fae and all fae races and faiths. East of Mesogea, across the Great Main and adjoined to the continent of Ignota, Tirnanoc has a long and rich history consisting of many kingdoms. In recent centuries, human empires have crossed the ocean with increasing frequency, claiming territory and colonies. As such, Tirnanoc is less and less stable for fae, driving the mass exodus of refugees and immigrants who end up in The Burgue.
One of the things that attracted Orlando Bloom to work on this show was the detail and richness of characters, and the chance to be a part of a world he'd never seen before.
Fae characters tend to be smaller in build than other species on the show. Their hollow bones make them lighter than most humans and their non-skeletal hydrostat wings allow them to fly, take off, and land swiftly, smoothly, and quietly.
In the series, "Carnival Row" is an informal name for the neighborhood located on the south bank of The Burgue's Beorn River characterized by small streets and winding alleys. Formerly human, its inhabitants today are primarily immigrants from war-torn corners of the world.
The world of "Carnival Row" takes place in 'the Republic of The Burgue,' on the continent of 'Mesogea.'
