"Star Trek: The Next Generation" was a pretty unusual job for classically trained theater performer Patrick Stewart, but it was one that he took very seriously from the beginning. By the time he got around to season 6 and had really gotten to know and love the world of "Star Trek," he took his performance even more seriously, but there was one season 6 episode that required even more dedication and some pretty dark research. In the second part of the two-part episode "Chain of Command," Picard is taken captive by the Cardassians and is tortured by Gul Madred (David Warner). Stewart was already pretty focused on the episode because of his lifelong appreciation for Warner's work, but as a member of Amnesty International for years before coming to "Star Trek," he was even more concerned about making sure the torture aspects of the episode were accurate and respectful to torture survivors.

In the sixth season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," in a two-part episode called "Chain of Command", Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) was released from his command of the U.S.S. Enterprise so that he may engage in a top-secret mission to a planet called Celtris III. His mission was to infiltrate a secret underground facility and locate a massively dangerous biological weapon that the Cardassians were said to be developing. The mission, however, was based on tainted intelligence, and there was no weapon. Instead, Picard is captured by a sadistic and terrifying Cardassian general named Madred (David Warner) who aims to torture Picard.
Madred didn't need information from Picard, however. The aim of Madred's cool and calculated infliction of pain seemed to be to break Picard's will, to merely prove that a stalwart and loyal officer could be snapped and conditioned. In a particularly vicious game, Madred illuminates...

Patrick Stewart had a rough start behind the scenes at Star Trek: The Next Generation.
As candidly detailed in an exclusive audio excerpt (hear Stewart narrate the story below) from his new autobiography, Making It So: A Memoir, the veteran British actor clashed with his castmates early on.
But first, Stewart detailed how nervous he was about playing a Star Trek captain, how industry insiders were predicting the syndicated series was doomed to fail, and how he was determined to take the part quite seriously. It was the British Shakespeare stage actor’s first regular TV series — he was being paid more money than he had ever imagined earning — and he wanted to prove naysayers wrong while respecting the legacy of the franchise.
So when he was on set shooting the show’s debut season and co-stars like Jonathan Frakes, Denise Crosby and Brent Spiner would tease him or ad-lib...

Is “Law and Order” on tonight? No. NBC’s long-running crime drama aired its Season 22 finale on Thursday, May 18, 2023. It also happened to be the 400th episode featuring Sam Waterston as District Attorney Jack McCoy. A 23rd season has been ordered, but it is not yet known when it will debut because of the writers’ strike. Read on for everything to know about “Law & Order.”
Who are the current “Law & Order” cast members?
As always, the show’s six main cast members are evenly divided into three “Law” characters — Jeffrey Donovan as Senior Detective Frank Cosgrove, Mehcad Brooks as Junior Detective Jalen Shaw and Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon — and three “Order” characters — Hugh Dancy as Executive Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price, Odelya Halevi as Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maroun and Sam Waterston as District Attorney Jack McCoy.

The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" was carefully constructed by showrunner Terry Matalas to reunite the central cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and gather them on the bridge of the Enterprise-d. Some of the introductions felt fair and organic. Others felt a little contrived. The inclusion of the Enterprise-d, a ship that had been destroyed in 1994's "Star Trek: Generations," was most certainly forced. But for many, the nostalgia was exhilarating, and seeing a 105-year-old Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) back in action for one last Borg rescue was a thrilling way to end the character's career.
Amid all the nostalgia, however, Matalas managed to introduce a fun, exciting new character into the mix: Captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick), the captain of the U.S.S. Titan-a.
Shaw was thrilling because, unlike most starship captains, he felt no impulse to stand on formality. "Star Trek," especially "Next Generation" was always stringently formal.

Back in 2020, prior to the debut of "Star Trek: Picard," lead actor Patrick Stewart explained to several reporters that he would only return to the show if he wasn't required to wear a Starfleet uniform. He didn't want to simply go back to the same schtick seen on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" some 30 years earlier, preferring to revisit Picard as a retired civilian. While this is a reasonable demand, a "Star Trek" series that wasn't about Starfleet, or that didn't take place on a starship that was actively trekking, proved difficult for the writers. The first two seasons of "Picard" centered on outsized, byzantine mysteries that involved interdimensional robots (in season 1) and causality loops (in season 2). There was no formal chain of command and no central technological haven for the characters to reconnoiter.
These missing elements were restored for the third season of "Picard," and it seems they were...

In the new multi-part History Channel documentary, The Center Seat, actor Armin Shimmerman — famous for playing Quark on Deep Space Nine — makes a poignant observation: Star Trek is really popular, but it’s not “beloved in Hollywood.” Shimmerman wasn’t throwing shade at the Hollywood establishment in general, but the point he was making was a little more nuanced: Despite being the most long-running, multi-faceted, and socially relevant science-fiction franchise in the history of both TV and film, Star Trek doesn’t get nominated, nor does it win, mainstream acting awards… like, ever.
This fact is intellectually offensive when you start to think about not just how many good actors have been on Star Trek, but also, how many specific performances have been ignored by the Emmys, the Golden Globes, and the Oscars. Recently, I caught up with documentary filmmaker Brian Volk-Weiss, the man behind The Center Seat (as well...

Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 2, Episode 2, “Kayshon, His Eyes Open”
In The Next Generation episode “The Most Toys,” Kivas Fajo tried to keep Data forever. The idea that someone thought it was okay to “collect” was an oddly self-referential concept for Star Trek even in the 1990s. Just like now, the idea of a Star Trek collectible was a thing hardcore Star Trek fans thought about all the time. But, other than the fact that everyone would actually want to “collect” Data, “The Most Toys” wasn’t actually about Star Trek collectibles.
But, the newest Star Trek: Lower Decks episode, kind of is? In “Kayshon, His Eyes Open,” the crew of the Cerritos encounters one of those famous collectors, while the crew of the Titan deal with some very familiar transporter clones. It’s almost like this is an episode that is filled with as many Easter eggs on purpose.

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1: “Strange Energies.”
The mission of the USS Cerritos is to do the jobs other Starfleet ships can’t; following up with all sorts of minutiae and boring outer space logistics, long after the Enterprise or the Defiant has warped out. But whether it’s Lower Decks or Picard or Discovery or Strange New Worlds, the mission of hardcore Trek fans is the same: Pause the screen and see what deep-cut Easter eggs got slipped in this time!
In Season 1, Star Trek: Lower Decks earned the reputation for the most meta-textual Star Trek ever. There are layers and layers of Trekdom within every frame of this series, making it hard to look at one episode and catalog all the references. But if you thought Season 1 went deep into the wells of Trekkie references and Easter eggs, Season 2 is here to make Season 1 look tame.

Star Trek Day was actually at the beginning of September, but Amazon has just announced that they’re making November their Star Trek Month. The online retailer has teamed up with CBS, Paramount and Idw Publishing to launch an exciting month-long promotion that allows fans to grab a free digital comic book from comiXology if they purchase select Trek products through Amazon.
The deal is that fans only have to spend $25 or more on Trek merchandise to qualify for a free comic book. If you do that, you can choose from out of three comics on offer, all first issues. The first is Star Trek: Picard – Countdown #1, the prequel comic to the recent hit CBS All Access series starring Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc which explores the mission that changed his life forever. This article contains Star Trek: Lower Decks episode 7 spoilers.
One of the weirdest moments in Star Trek: The Next Generation was when Jean-Luc Picard randomly abdicated command of the USS Enterprise to a random dude played by Ronny Cox, better known to sci-fi geeks as one of the bad guys in RoboCop. The newest episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks — “Much Ado About Boimler” — starts with that reference, and then kicks the Easter eggs into trans-warp drive. From shout-outs to really obscure early Tng episodes, to the return of a very familiar alien species from The Animated Series, this episode might be the most stuffed episode of Lower Decks, yet.
Get ready to for all the Easter eggs and references (that we caught) in Star Trek: Lower Decks episode 7, “Much Ado About Boimler.” Beam me up! Or Boim me up. You know what I’m sayin’.

Fox is set to order a handful of comedy and drama pilots in January with a view to move completely off-cycle.
This comes as the network steps up its push into comedy after not having any new live-action comedies on the fall schedule, with particularly high hopes for Carla, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik and based on British comedy Miranda.
“We’re going to order a couple to several drama and comedy pilots in January but we’re also doing off-cycle. We’re not going to do all of our ordering in January; our hope is to be completely off-cycle,” Fox president of entertainment Michael Thorn told Deadline. “We’re looking at ordering things when they’re ready and backing off the traditional cycle and looking to set series up for success.”

We've got a rundown of this year's must-have movie gifts!
It bears repeating: the death of physical media has been greatly exaggerated. Obviously streaming is the hotness these days, but with ever-changing rights issues meaning that your favorite show or film may be here today/gone tomorrow on Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, Apple+, and the myraid other services that have somehow banded together to reinvent cable television, there's comfort to be found in owning what you want to watch in a tangible way. The major studios are still supporting the Blu-ray and DVD formats which is great in terms of gift giving. These are still the perfect stocking stuffers, but don't sleep on other great movie merch for gift ideas -- from books to home theater accessories and beyond. Here's what movie-related ideas will make you a gift-giving superstar this year!

Jamie Lee Curtis is set to produce an upcoming military drama being developed at Fox called Chain of Command. She will be working with April Fitzsimmons and Greg Berlanti on the project.
Chain of Command is a one-hour drama that follows “a young Air Force investigator with radical crime-solving methodology who returns to her hometown to join a military task force that doesn’t want her, a family who has traumatized her, and confront the secrets that drove her away.”
This sounds like it’s going to be an intense series that centers around an interesting character. The story for the series was developed by Curtis and Fitzsimmons, who is an Air Force veteran. Fitzsimmons will also write the script for the pilot. She previously worked on the CW military drama Valor and DC Universe series Doom Patrol.
