Turkish director Tolga Karaçelik, who made a splash in the U.S. with absurdist comedy “Butterflies,” is getting ready to premiere his first English-language film, “The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer,” in which the offbeat serial killer in question is played by Steve Buscemi.
The New York-set film, which takes Karaçelik’s comic streak in a new direction, will launch on Saturday from the Tribeca Film Festival. “The Shallow Tale” also features John Magaro (“Past Lives”) as Keane, a struggling writer who befriends the “retired” serial killer, who eventually becomes Keane’s unlikely marriage counselor as he goes through divorce proceedings with his straight-laced wife (Britt Lower), as well as the muse for his next book.

Netflix’s The Program: Cons, Cults, and Kidnapping is occasionally as hard to watch as it is impossible to ignore. Directed by Katherine Kubler, a former “student” of the troubled-teen-repair institution, the limited documentary series uncovers the appalling conditions of the now-defunct and abandoned Ivy Ridge boarding academy located in the wilds of Oswegatchie, New York.
Kubler attended or was incarcerated in Ivy Ridge from March 2004 to June 2005. She entered at age 15, kidnapped abruptly against her will in the middle of the night on the grievous charge of sipping a Mike’s Hard Lemonade at a previous school. Facing an unbelieving father, Kubler feels the forcefully-abandoned experience she endured stole her teenage years, and continues to embezzle large deposits from her adult psyche. Her post-traumatic stress and persistent panic attacks are a constant reminder of damage that cannot be undone.
Except maybe through long-form journalism. Kubler self-effacingly calls herself an “amateur gumshoe,...

Taylor Swift is continuing to keep Swifties guessing!
During the surprise songs portion of her final show at Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia on Monday (February 26), Taylor performed two songs: “Forever & Always” from Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and “Maroon” from Midnights.
She followed up the piano performance by grabbing her guitar to sing a mash-up of songs about complicated relationships: “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” from Midnights and “Ivy” from Evermore.
Keep reading to find out more…
Taylor performed the songs in her green surprise songs dress, one of the four-color options she has worn throughout The Eras Tour. The other three dresses of the same design are in maroon, green and yellow.
Some Swifties have theorized that the dress colors provide hints as to the kinds of surprise songs she will play during a particular show.

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of none other than FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is known for hiding game secrets in the most discrete ways ever known to mankind. However, fans of the game on social media platforms, such as this particular user on Reddit have begun to point out the most bizarre secret about Elden Ring that Miyazaki may have kept hidden for very long. Listeners of Taylor Swift who have played the game pointed out how a song that came out 4 years ago predicted the events of the title way back.

Taylor Swift welcomed frequent collaborator Aaron Dessner back onstage Friday in Santa Clara, California — the penultimate stop on The Eras Tour’s U.S. leg — for the debut performance of “Right Where You Left Me,” which Swift cautioned would be one of the most difficult songs in her catalog to play live.
“We’re going to do a song that’s one of our favorites that we worked on together, and because it’s one of our favorites, there’s more pressure on it so this is one of the wordiest songs.

In a fan TikTok video, Taylor Swift can be seen standing on a part of the stage that was supposed to open a trap door for her to exit and make a costume change. But after stomping her foot and registering that the door wouldn’t open, Swift did some quick thinking, sprinting toward a different door that the dancers were using to leave the stage.

In a surprising move, Netflix has decided not to release the completed genre films The Inheritance (directed by Alejandro Brugués) and House/Wife (directed by Danis Goulet) as Netflix Originals. Thankfully, this isn’t a situation like Warner Bros. deciding to scrap Batgirl instead of going through with its release. The filmmakers behind these two projects will be able to try to find a new home for them… and the search is already underway. “Haters gonna hate...” but Taylor Swift’s influence over pop is undeniable. From her staggering back-catalogue to the public reclamation of her master recordings, the Grammy-winning US artist has, at 32, achieved an extraordinary level of success. Her songs have been compared to the revered works of artists as far apart as Beyoncé, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. And as she prepares to release her 10th studio album, Midnights, it seems as though she’s yet to reach the pinnacle of her songwriting prowess.
So how does she do it? Since the beginning of her career, she’s demonstrated her ability to balance the universal with the hyper-specific. Whether it’s the intensely detailed, semi-biographical ballad “the last great american dynasty” or the thinly veiled references to a fabled break-up call from her ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas in “Forever & Always”, Swift has an uncanny talent for reflecting the world’s emotional angst through her own lens.

Another summer of content has come and gone in the streaming world. And to celebrate the arrival of fall, Netflix is filling its list of new releases for September 2022 with, what else? More content!
Netflix is never shy about loading up its servers each month but September 2022 is a particularly packed time for the streamer, particularly when it comes to movies. The list of prominent Netflix original movies includes: road trip thriller End of the Road (Sept. 9), Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes-starring dark comedy Do Revenge (Sept. 16), and the Marilyn Monroe epic biopic Blonde (Sept. 28).
That’s not even to mention the usual arrival of new library titles, which are particularly juicy this fall. September 1 sees the arrival of A Clockwork Orange, Clueless, Scarface, and more. Meanwhile This is the End is set to roll on Sept. 16.

Talk about a Renaissance! Laverne Cox received the ultimate compliment on Monday night when she attended the U.S. Open to cheer Serena Williams on.
The 50-year-old “Inventing Anna” star was seated in the stands at the Usta Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, wearing a face mask. That paired with a black sheer top, brown leather pants, and hoop earrings made several people mistake Laverne for Beyoncé online and in broadcasts from the match.
Coincidentally, Laverne shared a video of herself getting ready set to Beyoncé’s song “Pure/Honey,” ahead of the match. Once the comparisons were made, the Emmy-nominated actress gushed about the moment online.

"We're not playing, we're on a mission!" Netflix has revealed trailers for a set of three (!!!) movies called Ivy + Bean, about two young best friends on adventures. It's adapted from the beloved, best-selling book series of the same name by Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall. Two unlikely friends, the loud and fearless Bean, and the thoughtful and quiet Ivy – they discover that an adventure can reveal that even seemingly different people can become the best of friends. "Each girl thinks the other one is weird. Each girl thinks she could never be friends with the other. But sometimes opposites can become the best of friends… because they're opposites!" All three movies will be released on the same day and feature back-to-back stories, based on the first three books in the series. They star Keslee Blalock as Ivy, and Madison Skye Validum as Bean, with Lidya Jewett, Garfield Wilson, Marci T. House,...

Modern-day production in Argentina lifted off from its new Argentine Cinema, born over 1991-95, in Brazil with Walter Salles’ 1998 “Central Station,” in Mexico from Carlos Reygadas’ 2002 “Japón.”
Now, Latin America is seeing second-phase expansion based out of smaller markets, driven by the energies of forward-thinking production companies determined to not just build slates but their national film industries.
In line with the massive new talent focus of many of Locarno’s industry programs – this year’s Germany First Look with five feature debuts, the Match Me! emerging producer springboard – Open Doors will focus on Latin America’s most under-represented territories and the Caribbean, where production companies have sprung up after national cinema lift-off in more major countries in the region.

Jordan Alexander was completely oblivious to how many few faces similar to hers were on “Gossip Girl,” the mid-aughts spectacle that dared to wonder what the children of New York’s upper echelon got up to after school.
The original CW series revealed in six juicy seasons that these extracurriculars included under-age debauchery at Butter, finessing your way into the Ivy League and perfecting the Machiavellian art of sabotage while wearing a lot of headbands. However, it did not show many Black characters joining in on the iconic fashion or the petty predicaments caused by Kristen Bell’s tattling voiceovers at the start of every episode.
“I was so completely unaware that there was such a lack of representation while watching because I was so used to seeing that — an all-white cast,” says Alexander, who stars in HBO Max’s reboot of the series as protagonist Julien Calloway, a mixed-race,...

CAA has signed Tolga Karaçelik, the Turkish director of Sundance-winning film “Butterflies,” for representation in all areas.
Based in Istanbul, writer-director Karaçelik is one of Turkey’s top film creatives and has previously been profiled by Variety. His films “Ivy,” set aboard a stranded cargo ship, and “Butterflies,” a dark comedy prompted by the death of his late uncle, both premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
“Butterflies” went on to receive the Park City, Utah festival’s Grand Jury Award in 2018, making Karaçelik the first Turkish director to win the prize.
After first getting a law degree in Turkey, Karaçelik went on to study filmmaking in New York before eventually returning to Turkey to film his debut feature “Toll Booth” (2010), about a Turkish toll-station worker with a vivid imagination. The pic won best first film, actor and cinematography at the country’s Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.

Ahead of the SXSW debut of their latest film, “Slash/Back,” three of the thriller’s producers —- Scythia Films’ Dan Bekerman and Stellar Citizens’ Chris Yurkovich and Alex Ordanis —- announced the launch of the new full-service production company, Good Question Media.
Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis will serve as partners and producers in the new venture, which will oversee film and television projects, supporting them from inception through distribution and packaging with the Good Question Media development fund.
As one of the very few Canada-based private equity funds, the company is uniquely positioned to access the international treaty funding systems. But that’s just one way the veteran producers aim to use their combined expertise.
“We’ve always been united in the belief that a fundamental strength of storytelling is its ability to challenge how an audience thinks or sees the world,” Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis told Variety in a joint statement.

Rhoyle Ivy King is making history as The CW's first Black nonbinary character, Nathaniel, on the new series, All American: Homecoming.
King, who uses he/him/they pronouns, impressed series creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll so much that she expanded the role of Nathaniel Hardin, who now appears in 10 of the 13 episodes.
TV Fanatic chatted with King about breaking barriers as the first Black and nonbinary character on The CW, his love of fashion, and working with Beyonce's Ivy Park.
Tell us how you blew everyone away at auditions of All American: Homecoming.
Thank you. Nkechi was too kind with that comment and helped make sure Nathaniel was portrayed honestly.
But I was particular with how I wanted the character to be presented in the audition. I put in a lot of work to ensure I gave what I thought was honest.
That is excellent. What has it been like playing...

The world premiere of Danis Goulet’s first feature, “Night Raiders,” in Berlin generated positive reviews and led to a U.S. sale to Samuel Goldwyn. But to the Toronto-based, Cree-Métis filmmaker it all felt a little abstract.
“I haven’t seen an audience reaction, so Toronto feels like the premiere,” she told Variety during a break from directing the Netflix thriller “Ivy,” which shot around Toronto this summer.
“Bringing ‘Raiders’ home is important because it talks about what’s happened here, in Canada, on this land,” added Goulet, referring to Canada’s residential school system — which operated from the 1870s to the 1990s and tore 150,000 Indigenous children from their families and cultures — and the discoveries this spring of unmarked graves of children at the sites of former schools.
Set in 2043 in a divided post-civil-war North America, “Raiders” follows a Cree woman (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) who returns from the forest to...

This time of year family’s at the forefront of the thoughts of many. Aside from being together (tough right now for some), the matriarch or patriarch is thinking about how to keep the home crew safe from harm and secure in their toasty beds. Unlike the Garrity clan from this week’s other big release Greenland, the Sharpe’s isn’t dealing with a planet-killing comet. His fears arise from the possible onslaught of stealthy intruders in the dead of night. It’s too bad that he doesn’t recall the quote from one of the founding fathers (maybe more of a cool uncle), Ben Franklin: “Those who would give up essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety”. Still, it probably didn’t occur to him that his fears could inspire his whole “unit” to succumb to a Bad Impulse.

If you're already adrift without another Hallmark Original Series to watch, you're not alone.
But we have good news today as Crown Media announced new original programming and some renewals we've been waiting for.
Most importantly, there are two renewals to announce that join When Calls the Heart for (fingers crossed) a 2021 release.
Good Witch will return for a seventh season, and Chesapeake Shores will return for a fifth season!
Hurrah!
As you know, Good Witch Season 6 just ended on quite the cliffhanger.
It was the first season in which Bailee Madison didn't appear as Grace, and in Rhys Matthew Bond only made guest appearances as Nick.
Without the younger cast, the adults got a lot more storylines, and love flourished.
Cassie (Catherine Bell) and Sam (James Denton) celebrated their one-year anniversary and began to grow under each other's influence.
The proved that there is always something left to learn about your partner.
