The long-in-development, at least from a post-production point-of-view, action comedy “Hidden Strike” has its first trailer, which you can watch above. That means the Jackie Chan/John Cena team-up flick, which was shot back in 2018, may finally reach cinemas or at least VOD. The film, initially titled “Snafu,” became a consistent victim of changing circumstances but external and internal.
The film was green-lit and shot amid a resurgence specifically in China for Jackie Chan-fronted actioners like “Kung Fu Yoga” and “Skiptrace.” The latter was also a (partially) English-language romp starring Johnny Knoxville in a clear attempt to recapture some of that “Rush Hour” or “Shanghai Knights” magic from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“Skiptrace” earned $131 million in 2016 while the former globe-trotting adventure film “Kung Fu Yoga” earned $256 million in 2017. “Since then, “The Climbers” earned $174 million in 2019, but Covid obviously put a damper on such robust earnings for a moment.

“Jumping off is easy, Stepping off is hard”. A line uttered by Jackie Chan in his latest feature, a tribute to the role of the stuntman. In many ways a line that echoes the career of the great performer. Over the past decade, we have gone from the expectation of a Jackie Chan release, to hope after recent disappointments such as “Kung Fu Yoga” and “The Vanguard”. Whilst those made references to his advancing years, they still felt like imitations of what we had seen and become accustomed to before. With “Ride On”, we get a glimpse of a man finally coming to terms with his own mortality. Consequently, we got one of his most interesting works in quite some time.

Hong Kong-based sales firm Golden Network has picked up international rights to Jackie Chan’s upcoming film “Ride On.”
The feature has recently wrapped production and is scheduled to be released on Dec. 31 in time for what is normally a peak cinemagoing period in China and elsewhere.
Asian films are currently struggling to achieve pre-sales in international markets, but “Ride On” could be an exception. Chan is reliably bankable in action and comedy films, with appeal in Asia, overseas diaspora territories and European TV, streaming and home entertainment markets.
“Ride On” is directed by one of China’s most bankable filmmakers, Larry Yang. Yang previously pleased critics with his 2015 rural drama “Mountain Cry” and then earned over 100 million at the box office with 2019 title “Adoring,” about six couples and their pets.

The English actor, who has worked with Chinese directors from Jackie Chan to Zhang Yimou, reveals how a chance meeting at the visa office in Beijing changed his life
If the Chinese film industry needs a stock foreign villain, I’m their first port of call. I was a Gatling gun-wielding mercenary in 2015’s Wolf Warrior, one of the first of the new wave of military blockbusters, and a hitman in Jackie Chan’s Kung Fu Yoga in 2017, among many others. And I recently played an American colonel in the Korean war in The Battle at Lake Changjin, the most expensive and successful Chinese film ever: it made $909m (£675m) last year.
It’s surreal – coming from humble beginnings in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire – to find myself in the middle of a massive field in Hubei province filming the likes of The Battle at Lake Changjin. You’d think you were in...

Actress Amyra Dastur says she has reached a point in her career where she is unaffected by a film not doing well. "I think I have had enough films not do well and do well, and realise that it is part and parcel of the job. One film works and one doesn't. I just laugh and get ready for the next film. As long as I get work, I am happy. The day I don't, that's the day I will be worried," she says.
The actress adds that there is a lot more she has to achieve.
"At the end of the day, I feel I still haven't reached that position where I wanted to be at," she says.
" I am proud of how far I have come without knowing anyone. It is about hard work and I believe you create your own luck. I am happy to see where my career is going.

Every cinema in China must schedule and actively promote at least two screenings of propaganda films per week beginning this week until the end of the year, Chinese authorities have declared, announcing the first batch of eligible titles Friday.
Theaters that are part of the National Alliance of Arthouse Cinemas or the “People’s Cinema” circuit — a group of more than 5,000 venues with special halls dedicated to propaganda films or that employ specific strategies like subsidies to promote such content — must screen propaganda films at least five times a week.
The directive is just one of a number of stipulations issued last week by China’s National Film Administration and powerful Propaganda Department about how the country’s film and entertainment industries should participate in efforts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party’s founding, which hits this July 1.

More than 80% of movie tickets in China are sold online or via mobile device, one of the world’s highest penetration rates. That gives the country’s ticketing agencies unusually accurate insight into audience behavior and film tracking.
After the early part of last year was wiped out by the coronavirus, how strong is the theatrical industry’s recovery?
Liu Zhenfei, analyst at leading ticketing agency Maoyan ran his slide rule over the upcoming Chinese New Year peak season and shared his analysis with Variety.
Variety: What is Maoyan’s overall forecast for the Chinese New Year week’s box office? Higher or lower than in 2019?
Liu: The data from Maoyan “Want to Watch” reflects audience expectations for the upcoming films during the week-long Chinese New Year holiday. And it is encouraging. “Want to Watch” numbers for “Detective Chinatown 3” exceeded 4 million. No other film has generated more than 2 million “Want to Watch” clicks before.

Few stars have worked harder to give audiences pleasure over a long haul than Jackie Chan. But lately, his screen appearances have been those of the elder statesman still trotted out to nominally preside over expensive but flavorless official diplomatic functions you doubt even he relishes. The newest case in point reunites him with director Stanley Tong, a sporadic collaborator since “Supercop” nearly three decades ago.
That movie was inspired escapism. “Vanguard” is just the clock-punching variety, big, flashy and generic in all save its silliest excesses. Like several other recent mainland China megaproductions, this action spectacular seems hellbent on containing every possible marketable genre element, with no concern for whether they cohere or cancel one another out.
Delayed from a planned January home-turf launch as one of the first Covid release casualties, it proved a notable box-office disappointment upon finally opening Sept. 30. Gravitas Ventures’ release to 1,500-plus U.S.

Actors from Sammo Hung to Sylvia Chang have tackled the problems Asian immigrants face in the US and Canada. “Model,” aka “Anchor Baby,” takes a narrowly focused approach to the issue. In her debut feature, director Ran Jing shows how bias and bureaucracy can thwart even those positioned on professional fast tracks.
Lu Shi (Yuxian Shang), a Chinese immigrant in New York City, is at the end of her rope. Trained as an architect, she washes dishes in a restaurant to get by, living on leftovers and fending off eviction notices. When she finally lands an interview with the prestigious Greyson firm, she learns she needs a valid visa to accept the entry-level position.
“Are you an athlete?” asks the discount immigration attorney she consults for help. “Can you get married?” Lu’s options are so limited that when she learns about a “medical parole” visa exception,...

A staple of American fantasies, the idea of the island castaway living alone from the rest of the world is a curious Western mindset designed to sell the return to tranquility and primitive values in the modern world with examples ranging from “Robinson Crusoe” to various ‘Survivor’ seasons. This Chinese black dramedy, directed by star Huang Bo, takes that mindset and uses it to fuel his directorial debut released July 30th on digital and Blu-Ray from WellGo USA.

The top five remained almost unchanged from the week before, with A Cool Fish staying top for two weeks straight. Thanks to good word of mouth, the dark comedy continued its strong run with $39.5m, bringing its 17-day total to $88.9m and making it the 13th biggest local film of 2018.

Durban — With world leaders arriving in Johannesburg this week, with an aim toward boosting trade ties and stimulating the economies of the five member states at the annual Brics summit, delegations from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa gathered in Durban to highlight the countries’ cultural output at the 3rd annual Brics Film Festival.
Running parallel to the Durban Film Festival, the Brics festival opened Sunday night with a splashy ceremony featuring live performances and short films from each of the member states. At the Durban FilmMart on Monday, a delegation of filmmakers and cultural representatives from each nation gathered to look at how the festival – still in its infant stages – can set the groundwork for greater collaboration in the years ahead.
“We do have a lot more in common with Brics countries than we have with our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world,” said South African filmmaker Xoliswa Sithole,...

Tracking an independent film crew on a difficult field research trip in Southwest China, Sixth Generation writer-director Zhang Ming’s “The Pluto Moment” ponders the relationship between life and death, nature and society, art and commercialism. Unlike many films about filmmaking, which lend themselves to a kind of meta self-awareness, this deceptively simple yet quietly revelatory drama features engaging characters and offers wryly ironic comments on the unpredictable nature of film production.
Since debuting with “In Expectation” in 1996, Zhang has made films suffused with enigmas, revolving around disappearances, sudden breakups, and other inexplicable human behavior, often showing fog enveloping Wushan, the landmark of his birthplace, to evoke a sense of mystery. Here, he uses blindness as a metaphor for the unknown, with which his protagonists grapple, while also symbolizing the director’s own struggle as he spent years trying to get this project off the ground.
