Didn’t get to Sundance this January? Me neither. But now some arthouse moviegoers in the U.S. will have a chance to check out a selection of the best short films from this year’s fest, starting in New York City, where the IFC Center debuts today the 2015 Sundance Film Festival Award-Winning Shorts. (Keep an eye on your local arthouse: this may show up there in the coming months.)
The highlight of the program and winner of the Short Film Jury Award — meaning it was the best short of the festival — is the absolutely astonishing “World of Tomorrow” [IMDb], from American filmmaker Don Hertzfeldt.

Chicago – Friday, May 1st, kicks off one of 2015 Chicago’s most special events, the Chicago Critics Film Festival (Ccff) – a film festival as programmed by the members of the Chicago Film Critics Association. The place to be is at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, and the titles included are an exciting batch of movies making their premiere here.
Many of the films had their world premiere at festivals like Sundance, Toronto and South X Southwest, and HollywoodChicago.com contributors Nick Allen and Patrick McDonald have been sampling the best of the festival, and offer this preview of the kick-off weekend. Each capsule is designated with Na (Nick Allen) or Pm (Patrick McDonald) – to indicate the author – or encapsulates the official synopsis from the festival.

John Stamos’ appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show on Monday night came with the announcement that Netflix was adding another show to their roster; Fuller House, a spinoff of the late 80s/early 90s sitcom Full House, this time focusing on two of the Tanner women and Kimmy Gibbler in their grown up years. While it’s not a harbinger of doom for television, the announcement of this series is troubling, especially given the show’s driving force, and is not something that should be pursued with other series.
The primary reason this show’s existence is a bad idea is that its driving force is nostalgia. Full House has been described as many things over the course of its run and in the years since its end, but the one thing people have not said about the story is that it’s incomplete. In fact, Full House lasted eight seasons,...

Over the years, numerous films have seen television adaptations of some sort, from literal recreations such Ferris Bueller to more spiritual ones such as FX’s current series Fargo. Short films, on the other hand, have rarely made the transition, often ending up as feature films of their own, with 2014’s Whiplash being a notable example. Showtime, however, is set to try this route, as Deadline reports that the channel is developing a series based on the short film Smilf.
The series, which will consist of half-hour episodes, is based on the short film of the same name by filmmaker Frances Shaw. The short film, which Shaw wrote, directed, and starred in, made its debut at the 2015 Sundance Film festival, going on to win the Short Film Jury Prize at the event. The film’s synopsis from Sundance is as follows.

Updated with details and quotes: The Sundance Film Festival awards ceremony tonight in Park City saw a dramatic dual decision and strong political voices to put a cap on a hot-deals festival. Like last year, when Whiplash took both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award on its way to an Best Picture Oscar nomination, the much-sought Me And Earl And The Dying Girl took both this year.
“I want to dedicate this to all the young filmmakers in my hometown of Laredo, Texas,” said director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon onstage. Fox Searchlight and Indian Paintbrush teamed to land the pic earlier this week after frenzied bidding, with a 2015 release planned. The Jesse Andrews script follows Greg, who is coasting through senior year of high school as anonymously as possible, avoiding social interactions like the plague while secretly making spirited, bizarre films with Earl, his only friend.
