One of the most exciting things about PBS’s time at the Television Critics Association press tour is that, over the course of two days, critics get exposed to programming that covers an incredibly diverse range of subjects, from deep space exploration to nature to great poets to world-changing wars. But this summer, many of the panels took at least a moment to acknowledge the currently precarious state of public television programming in the United States, due to a proposed federal budget that would eliminate funding for PBS.
As reported on Sunday, PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger explained to critics that should the proposed budget go through, PBS had “no Plan B” for what would happen next. Many of the other speakers who appeared over the following two days had plenty to say about what effect this would have on the kind of programming they create, should this budget pass.

A day after the presidential election, a writer on “The Originals” turned in a script that featured a female character getting beat up by a man.
There were reasons for this: It was a memory — a flashback to centuries earlier. They were wearing period garb. “The Originals” is a supernatural show, and yes, demons can be awful, even the ones searching for redemption.
“But he beat her up,” said executive producer Julie Plec. “We realized at that moment they can’t be together anymore. And we killed a love story on that day. One that people who watch the show are probably rooting for. Narratively we were going down this path, but my conscience can’t advocate that kind of violence.”
A lot of things changed for storytellers in light of a Donald Trump presidency, but the depiction of females — and violence against women — especially became more relevant for filmmakers...

It means something when one of American cinema’s greatest auteurs and commits to working on a digital platform, big-screen experience be damned. That’s exactly what Martin Scorsese did by partnering with Netflix on his next project, the $125 million mob movie “The Irishman.” While the 74-year-old New Yorker delights in celebrating film history, he’s practical enough to know his movies must remain relevant in rapidly changing times.
The fast-talking cinephile has also moved into television (“Boardwalk Empire” and “Vinyl”), fought to preserve film history through archival efforts, and produced films from younger generations. By getting a handle on multiple facets of the moving image, he’s saving filmmaking from extinction in a fragmented media age, even as he contributes to the art form with his own vibrant and ambitious directing efforts.

It’s easy to empathize with the Writer’s Guild of America, whose members may soon stop working on film and TV scripts if there’s no new agreement with studios by May 1. They’re fighting for larger contributions to the WGA’s health insurance plan, which has been running at a deficit for years, while studios want higher premiums, benefit cuts, and an increased annual earnings minimum for writers to qualify for coverage. However, there’s one group with nothing to gain, and everything to lose, if a lengthy strike hits Hollywood: below-the-line crew.

Há Terra!I want to apologize for providing this Wavelengths avant-garde preview a little later than I might've liked. Hell, given that it's been over a week since movies died, I'm not exactly sure how much more kindling I can chuck onto the pyre. But I should remark that compared with previous years' iterations of the Tiff Wavelengths series, 2016 does feel a bit...off. I'm chiefly referring to the experimental short films here. (My second part, addressing the Wavelengths features, will be along in a matter of days.) Make no mistake. There's plenty of great work in this year's programs. But I do feel that the disparity this year between the truly exceptional films and the mediocre-to-not-very-good ones is markedly high.I enjoy films, and more than this, I enjoy enjoying them. I hardly get my kicks by being a nattering nabob of negativity. But programmers have to work with what is available to them,...
