Coel was previously with CAA but the writer and performer left the agency after she said it “tried to push her” to strike a deal with Netflix for her semi-autobiographical series I May Destroy You.
Coel famously rejected Netflix’s multimillion-dollar offer due to the streamer refusing to budge on requiring a portion of back-end rights in return. The show was instead greenlit by the BBC and HBO, and brought the London-born star critical acclaim and global fame. The series scored nine Emmy nominations, with Coel winning for writing.

If you’re not one of the more-than-a-million people so far who’ve either bought Adam Kay’s blisteringly funny and poignant NHS memoir, unwrapped it as a gift, or both, then do please take the required action.
This is Going to Hurt is a short, great read with a vital message: childbirth is horrendous. Additionally: the people who make the NHS function, providing care to all that’s free at the point of delivery, do so under astounding pressure, working extraordinarily long hours without enough recompense and deserve respect, kindness and gratitude, not a continual volley of under-funding, government flak, and patients who insist on introducing objects not designed for internal use to their orifices without giving due thought to an exit strategy.
Drawn from Kay’s diaries during his time working as a Junior Doctor in a series of UK Obstetrics departments and published in 2017, the memoir is...

Will Ben Whishaw earn his first Golden Globe nomination for his scene-stealing role in the Amazon limited series “A Very English Scandal”? He has been on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s radar before, having appeared in Globe contenders like “I’m Not There,” “London Spy,” “The Danish Girl” and “The Lobster,” but he himself has never made the cut. That could change this year with “A Very English Scandal,” which could make up for him being snubbed for another very English limited series that was near and dear to my heart, “The Hour.”
I think “The Hour” was one of the most underrated dramas of the decade. The short-lived BBC America series followed the inner workings of a fictional news program in the 1950s. It only ran for two seasons (2011-2012), and its primary notoriety in the Us came when it pulled off a stunning upset at the 2013 Emmys...

After sweeping the Emmys in 2016 for its first season, “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” the FX anthology series “American Crime Story” is hoping for a repeat victory with its second installment, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” The FX series focuses on the murder of designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) by spree killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss). Gold Derby recently spoke with Criss, Ricky Martin, Cody Fern, Jon Jon Briones, director/producer Daniel Minahan and composer Mac Quayle about their work on the show. Scroll down and click on their names below to be taken to their full interviews.
Playing Cunanan was a challenge Criss happily accepted. “I’m kind of a glutton for punishment,” he reveals about delving into the pathology of a serial killer. “I enjoy doing that emotional Tetris. I have my sort of ‘CSI’ board of … emotional peaks and events in his life. And that’s...

“We are nothing but a pair of old queens,” Hugh Grant tells his dining companion in the House of Commons near the start of Amazon’s new limited series “A Very English Scandal.” The frankness is startling given what we know about Grant, the leading man in any number of straight romantic comedies. And it comes to seem yet more striking as Grant’s character, the real-life member of Parliament Jeremy Thorpe, obfuscates endlessly about his desire through the series’s three-hour running time. He’s rarely ever open about desire, treating it as an embarrassing biological fact to be sated on brief hiatuses from heterosexual life.
The series, which first aired overseas on BBC One in May and comes to Amazon June 29, comes by its title honestly. U.K. talent (including director Stephen Frears and stars Grant and Ben Whishaw) suffuse the proceedings with a curious reticence, an enigmatic...

TNT is hoping to make a big mark on the Emmys with their limited series “The Alienist.” Produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”), the show focuses on a criminal psychologist (Daniel Brühl) who teams up with a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. Gold Derby recently spoke with Brühl, Evans, and Fanning, director Jakob Verbruggen, cinematographer P.J. Dillon, production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, and costume designer Michael Kaplan about their work. Scroll down and click on their names below to be taken to their full interviews.
To prepare for his role, Brühl read the works of psychology pioneers like Sigmund Freud, finding a lot of similarities between his character, Dr. Kreizler, and that famous Viennese founder of psychoanalysis. This story about “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” first appeared in the Miniseries/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Most scientists estimate that the giant molten ball in our sky has another 5 billion years left to power life on earth. But for a coterie of fashion fans and one spree killer, it was vanquished on a July morning in 1997, when Gianni Versace was found dead, splayed on a South Beach sidewalk.
“He was the sun in an entire universe. When he disappeared, a void was created and everything collapsed,” Édgar Ramírez said of the celebrated fashion designer. Ramírez plays the loud visionary in FX’s limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” a meditation on homophobia and shame, and producer Ryan Murphy’s second installment in a franchise kicked off by the Emmy-winning “The People v. O.J. Simpson.”

Director Jakob Verbruggen describes “The Alienist” as “a roller-coaster ride that takes the audience by the hand and transports it onto the streets of New York. It’s a visual time machine.” Produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”), this TNT limited series focuses on a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) who teams up with a criminal psychologist (Daniel Brühl) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. “He knows what he wants and he thinks he knows how to get it,” reveals Jon Jon Briones about his critically-acclaimed role as Modesto Cunanan, the father of serial killer Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss) in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” for FX. In our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), Briones discusses how his childhood growing up in the Phillipines, and his work in the theater prepared him to play the “delusional” father of a serial killer.
In “Versace” he portrays a family man obsessed with two things– success and his youngest son Andrew. Those obsessions drive Modesto inflate his own sense of self-worth while lavishing attention on Andrew at the expense of the rest of the family. TNT’s “The Alienist” follows the investigation into a series of grisly murders that haunt a team of investigators. In that sense it’s not unlike HBO’s anthology “True Detective.” The first season of that drama won 5 Emmys out of 12 nominations in 2014, including one for Cary Joji Fukunaga‘s direction. Now Fukunaga is an executive producer and writer for “The Alienist,” so will he return to the Emmy race? If so he’ll be migrating to new categories: his season of “True Detective” was entered as a drama at the Emmys, but “The Alienist” is expected to compete as a limited series.
Apart from Fukunaga’s participation and similarities in tone, “The Alienist” is a quite different series, but it might appeal to many of the same television academy members who voted for “True Detective” or other crime series like “Boardwalk Empire” and “The Night Of.” Where season one...

According to Edgar Ramirez and Ricky Martin, the fact that they’re playing partners Gianni Versace and Antonio D’Amico in the FX limited series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” was “destiny.”
At the Television Critics Association Winter press tour, the pair told IndieWire that before “American Crime Story” executive producer Ryan Murphy invited Ramirez to star as the titular designer, the two were already acquainted. In fact, the day that Ramirez got the role officially, he and Martin had plans to do a gallery tour together in Los Angeles. “I entered the first gallery and said ‘Ricky, I’m sorry I’m late, I was just finalizing this call, I’m doing Gianni Versace.’ He was the first person I told,” he said.

If you're a horror movie fan, I think you might enjoy this first trailer for the haunted house horror thriller Marrowbone. The trailer gives off a menacing eerie vibe and I like what I'm seeing. The movie comes from the screenwriter of The Orphanage and The Impossible, Sergio G.Sánchez, and this is the first film that he has directed.
The movie also has a solid cast that includes George MacKay (Captain Fantastic, Peter Pan), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, The New Mutants), Mia Goth (A Cure for Wellness, The Survivalist), and Matthew Stagg (War & Peace, London Spy). Here's the synopsis:

If the first time you ever heard the name “Versace” was in “Showgirls,” know that you might have missed a key layer of meaning behind the joke.
In the 1995 Paul Verhoeven film, young stripper Nomi (Elizabeth Berkeley) finds herself with some extra cash, so she buys a tight short dress from a Versace shop on the Las Vegas strip. You might think that the point of the bit is that Nomi reveals her trashy roots when she pronounces the name of the brand as “Ver-sase,” as opposed to its proper pronunciation of “Ver-sa-che.”
But according to “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” showrunner Tom Rob Smith, it goes far deeper than that. “It’s not that someone classy doesn’t know it’s ‘Ver-sa-che,'” he told IndieWire. “Because that person wouldn’t be wearing Versace.”

Virtually everything about the lengthy title “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” is misleading. For one, it’s less of a crime story — in the “Law & Order,” cops and courtrooms sense — than a biography of Andrew Cunanan, the man who murdered at least five people over a three-month span in 1997. One of those people was iconic fashion designer Gianni Versace, but his relevance to Cunanan’s life, and thus the series overall, is largely symbolic — he’s the American dream, and he’s still damaged.
To the show’s credit, these shifts aren’t problematic or even the most jarring twist on Season 1’s “The People vs. O.J. Simpson.” “Versace” is told in flashforward; it starts with Versace’s death and then works its way back in time through Cunanan’s other homicides and even into his childhood. This structural choice never delivers the emotional...

Film production is becoming “more difficult” for Working Title due to boom in high-end series, says Tim Bevan.
Working Title co-chairman Tim Bevan has said that the rise of big-budget “super TV” series such as Netflix’s The Crown represents a challenge to his company’s film business.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Broadcasting House programme yesterday (Mar 19), Bevan commented: “With Netflix and Amazon coming into the market place aggressively, it is a new form. It’s a form that actors, directors and writers are finding very attractive.”
Asked whether he believed the rise of high-end series backed by those SVoD players was negatively impacting the film industry, Bevan responded: “The area of the film business that Working Title works in, which is quality medium budget movies, $15m-$25m movies, has certainly been impacted by this.”
