The final episode this great first series deserved.
Sleepin_Dragon5 January 2023
Andy is desperate to win back Becky's affections, and Lance is still undecided as to whether to help Maggie out or not.

I raced my way through this first series, I liked it initially, I came to love it as it developed, I'd hoped this first series would end on a high, it does that, and then some.

A high quality episode with so many questions answered, we get to learn Larry's mystery, the corpse and the dogs, we learn what Sophie is really all about, and of course there's the conclusion of Andy and Becky's spat.

Gentle comedy, it was a wonderful mix of humour and drama, I've always been of the opinion that comedy works best when it's tinged with a little bit of tragedy, a little bit of sadness, this show did it beautifully.

I still kick myself for not watching it when it first came out, I don't know why I didn't, but I really did miss out.

9/10.

S1: A bit too slight, but still enjoyable in its specific elements

I'd not heard of this show until very recently (as it comes to a close) and jumped back to watch the first season. There is little about it that doesn't yell BBC4 at you - niche plot, very gentle comedy of smallness and slight pain, and delivered by several terrific actors. It is very slight in how it delivers, and in truth at times I took against it for how deliberately shuffling and 'small' it was trying to be. Mostly though it won me over with its humor, its pacing, and its affection for its flawed characters. I don't know how often I laughed out loud, but it did provide plenty of smiles and moments to enjoy.

Not sure I totally engaged with the main plot - or at least the love triangle with Andy at the center; it felt too artificial and didn't have a convincing foundation to it. The actions of the characters didn't ring true. Lance's situation was more convincing, even though elements were exaggerated for comedic effect. Part of that is how good Toby Jones is; he always is of course, but here he gets the tone just right and his performance makes up for the slightness of the material at times. Crook is good but not quite as good. He pushes things a bit too much at times, not letting it seem natural - often it feels like he is in a rush to do the thing he needs to do, rather than letting it come. The supporting cast are variable but mostly good; Stirling didn't work for me - not sure why just didn't buy her performance throughout.

Enjoyable in its elements though, even if it is very slight and at times doesn't convince in its content and internal movements.

Episode 6

Detectorists is a bittersweet comedy that has a lot to say about friendship, both presumed and real.

Andy realising that he fell for a honeytrap. He sells his metal detector and tries to get back with Becky.

Meanwhile Lance learns that his ex wife Maggie always knew about his lottery win. That is why she put up with him hanging around.

One day she wanted to get a piece of the action. In short Lance was being used by her.

Sophie also fathoms that she was being used by Simon & Garfunkel. She turns the tables on them.

As for Farmer Bishop, his wife is alive and well and living elsewhere.

The first series ends with Andy and Lance metal detecting and clueless as to just what lies beneath.

A good first series, there is nothing laugh out loud but you like the characters.
