After enthralling fans for over 25 years, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is arguably the most renowned anime series, captivating fans worldwide through its epic tale of adventure and friendship. Despite the long list of 1000+ chapters and manga, Oda-sensei has yet to unveil several mysteries of the One Piece world, keeping fans eager for more.

While One Piece asks for a lot of commitment from viewers, in return it leaves them enchanted by Oda-sensei’s narrative and Luffy’s journey to become the King of the Pirates. Despite holding the record for the highest-selling manga series globally, the anime falls short in one aspect that may surprise many One Piece fans.
Interestingly, Eiichiro Oda’s masterpiece doesn’t even rank among the Top 10 longest-running anime list and is surpassed by the likes of many iconic titles, which, to haters, make One Piece look inferior.

Classic series Doraemon is well known for its many futuristic gadgets, from the Anywhere Door to a toaster that helps you memorize information. For its latest collab, the series is teaming up with Anrealage: a fashion brand that, like Doraemon himself, combines future tech with everyday items. The result is a line of unique, unusual wearables reminiscent of the beloved character. Fashion designer Kunihiko Morinaga says the inspiration comes from the interpretation of "Sf" not as sci-fi or science fantasy, but "sukoshi fushigi" ("a little mysterious"). His goal was to create "everyday 22nd century clothes": something wearable and convenient, but with a little bit of weirdness baked in. That's definitely true of this blue-and-white button-down shirt. While it drapes nicely while worn, it turns spherical if you button it all the way up! Reminiscent of the outsized Chinese box office success once enjoyed by a certain genre of Hollywood movie – think “Expendables 3,” Pacific Rim” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction” – some Japanese anime films are now earning more in China than they are in their native Japan.
Last year, “Suzume” (pictured above) earned $117 million in China, coming in ahead of the film’s $104 million total in Japan.
And this year, Oscar winner “The Boy and the Heron,” despite its late release in China, enjoyed Middle Kingdom gross revenues of $109 million, dwarfing that of Japan, where the film was received more tepidly and earned only $57 million.
The scale of the China theatrical market has occasionally thrown up other examples of outsized success — in 2016, “Dangal” earned $190 million in China, compared with its already huge $77 million in India; the same year “Bad Genius” earned $41 million in China, compared with its $3.3 million in its native Thailand; Luc Besson...

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” enjoyed one day at the top of the mainland China box office before being deposed by a crop of local new releases that opened in time for the Dragon Boat holiday. “Civil War” performed even more slowly.
China’s Friday to Sunday weekend box office saw “Be My Friend” score $8.1 million (RMB57.7 million), albeit earned over just two days. That put it ahead of “Walk the Line” in second place with $7.8 million (RMB55.6 million) and “Crisis Negotiators,” with $5.8 million (RMB40.9 million), according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway.
“The Garfield Movie,” which had a two-day run the previous weekend, slipped from second place to fourth. It scored $5.4 million (RMB38.0 million) for a nine-day cumulative of $15.2 million in China. Like most 90s kids, if you have grown up enjoying the adventures of Doraemon and have taken a liking to the wonderful, imaginative, and futuristic worldview showcased in the series, there is a strong chance that you will love Netflix’s latest anime release, T P Bon. Created by the same creative genius duo, Fujiko Fujio, T P Bon not only bears similarities with Doraemon through the common Kodomo art style implemented in their visuals but also through their approach to disguise heavy themes through the bright, colorful lens of children’s fiction. With T P Bon, the treatment veers towards a more mature tone, as time travel shenanigans work as a scrutinizing mechanism, which raises tough-to-answer questions regarding human morality, virtues, and vices.

Netflix unveiled teaser art for a handful of upcoming anime projects during a morning panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival today. The streamer also discussed the anime feature expansion of hit Netflix series The Witcher, The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf which showrunner and executive producer Lauren Schmidt-Hissrich said will be a prequel about “what it takes to become a witcher.”
The original fantasy series has been a big success for the streamer and centers on Henry Cavill as the grim Geralt of Rivia, the bane of supernatural beasties. The series story follows the intertwined destinies of three individuals in the vast world of The Continent, where humans, elves, witchers, gnomes, and monsters battle to survive and thrive, and where good and evil is not easily identified.

Like its signature “Godzilla” franchise, Toho normally towers above the rest. The company is a producer, distributor and exhibitor that operates Japan’s largest theater chain. As a distributor, it consistently accounts for the lion’s share of local hits, and in some years it gets to release the films of anime maestro Hayao Miyazaki.
But even mighty Toho is being brought low by the coronavirus crisis, which shuttered the nation’s theaters following a government state of emergency declaration early in April.
For the first quarter of FY2021, from March 1 to May 31 of this year, Toho reported a plunge in revenues of 51% to $308 million, compared with $632 million in the same period last year. Meanwhile, profits fell 81% to $27 million, against $150 million in the first quarter of the last financial year.

“X-Men: Dark Phoenix” may have notched the worst opening weekend in the franchise’s history in the U.S., but it led China’s box office with $32.1 million over the country’s three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday weekend, debuting last Thursday, a day before its U.S. release.
The film’s China opening is nearly on par with its $33 million bow in the U.S., and accounts for almost 30% of its global box office so far – highlighting just how dependent Hollywood tentpoles have become on the Middle Kingdom.
The film has been panned by Western critics, who have given it a dismal 23% on Rotten Tomatoes. In China, it received just 7.7, 7.2 and 6 out of 10 on the key user review platforms Maoyan, Tao Piaopiao and Douban, respectively. Many fans expressed disappointment despite their love of an imagined bromance between characters Magneto and Professor X. The film’s marketing team nonetheless put out...

Though its opening film is high-profile Hollywood romance “A Star is Born,” the Tokyo International Film Festival is increasingly focusing its efforts on building bridges with Asia. Especially Japan’s near neighbor, China.
The 31st edition of the Tokyo festival got under way Thursday evening with a ceremony at the X Theater in the fashionable Roppongi district. The event runs until Nov. 3.
“Star” is a smart crowd-pleasing choice as opener, with good prospects for the Oscars and other awards, down the road. But director-star Bradley Cooper and singing superstar, Lady Gaga, despite her massive popularity in Japan, were notable by their absence on the red carpet. Japanese actor Shinubo Terajima stood in at the ceremony as ambassador for the film and introduced a clip.
The last time Tiff had no big Hollywood guest for its opening or closing film was in 1992 — the fifth edition, when “1492: Conquest of Paradise” was the closing film.

Bucking a decade-long box office trend toward local films, Hollywood dominated the Japanese movie-going in the first half of 2018. But the respite in the world’s number three theatrical market may not last.
The number one and two films for the January-June period, “Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer” ($76 million) and “Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Treasure Island” ($47 million), were local and the new entries in long-running anime series. Counting the $34 million for number five “Shoplifters,” Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Palme-d’Or-winning family drama, Japanese films in the top ten earned a total of $157 million. That compares with the $209 million earned by the seven Hollywood films in the top ten.
Hollywood’s successes were an eclectic bunch. Fox’s “The Greatest Showman” beat any of the franchise titles, earning $48 million. “The Boss Baby” earned $30.7 million for Toho-Towa, making Japan the number two international result for the Fox comedy.
