Denis Mukwege in City Of Joy
Doctor Denis Mukwege,, whose work recently featured in documentary City Of Joy and has previously been profiled in Congo: The Doctor Who Saves Women, today received the Nobel Peace Prize. A former recipient of the Un Human Rights Prize, he was operating at Panzi Hospital when he heard the news.
Mukwege specialises in reconstructive surgery used to help women who have been victims of rape, which has been used extensively to terrorise populations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Those affected, who include children, frequently have chronic pain and loss of basic bodily functions. Some suffer for years without access to treatment and others would die without prompt medical intervention. Mukwege dedicated his prize to his patients.
In 2012, Mukwege left the country after ongoing threats to his family led to his daughters being taken hostage, but he subsequently returned and now lives under the protection of Un guards.

The team involved with a centre in the eastern Congo that acts as a refuge for women who have survived violence discuss the impact of their work
How does one find joy amid unspeakable tragedy? Madeleine Gavin’s documentary City of Joy, about a community built around women who have survived horrific violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Drc), gives us a glimpse at both an incredible injustice still occurring today, and how Congolese women are combating it with their own grassroots movement.

Ah, movies. Remember those, Netflix viewers? Because why binge every episode of “Queer Eye” when you could do a “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man 3,” and “The Breakfast Club” triple-header? It would take just as much time and be much more educational.
All three are heading to the streaming giant next month, along with “The Cider House Rules,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” and “Groundhog Day.” Netflix gets into the comedy game with originals, including Sanaa Lathan in “Nappily Ever After” and “Sierra Burgess Is A Loser,” starring Shannon Purser of “Stranger Things” and “Riverdale” fame. Rashida Jones makes her directorial debut next month with “Quincy,” the definitive documentary about her legendary father, Quincy Jones.
