Commissioner Krüger is packed to leave the Spreewald for good, when he must take charge of a new case, the arson of hotel Wotschofska in Hochwald, reduced to a ruin where the corpse is found of Engel, he was killed before he burned. Suspects include hotel owner Karsten Hellstein and his beloved Tina Engel, the adulterous new widow. Past secrets prove crucial, spelling another crime, as the hotel and its potential for a new luxury project involve investors and Serbian Vladislav Bratic, Lisa's recently returned lover who fled abroad after another failed plot ten years earlier and proves a dangerous prey for Fichte's uniformed men.

It's midsummer in the Spreewald. The heat affects everyone. A man throws himself in front of a truck on a lonely country road to commit suicide. His name is Gottfried Richter. An emergency operation is performed. A lot of someone else's blood is discovered on the clothes of the prisoner on remand. The man in the accident has apparently committed a serious crime. While commissioner Thorsten Krüger and Fichte are looking for the actual victim of the bloody crime and puzzling over a motive, the past of the man is gradually revealed in flashbacks, who once found his great love in the canoe maker daughter Irene and married her. But the happiness of the young couple cracked over the years by degrees.

Knut Hellstein comes to commissioner Krüger's mobile home, demanding help in a dirty game in the energy business, calling a marker from the cop, who accepts unofficially as he failed to d-save Knut's father Karsten Hellstein, who ended up suicidal. Krüger soon suspects Knut being accomplice as well as victim. Krüger ends up comatose due to a fire bomb on his caravan, before he can question the key witness. Beat cop Fichte dragged him out of the flames and continues the investigation, while Krüger has visions including dead people. The case also involves a blackmailer, corruption in privatizing after the reunification of Germany and Knut's ex Jackie and her fatherless baby.

Two people die in quick succession during forest work and a car accident. Fichte suspects a connection with a local rock band "The Wolves". Since Krüger refuses to work on the case, Fichte tries to clarify the case with police candidate Luise Bohn. Meanwhile, Krüger retires into the forest as a hermit. After the investigation does not progress, Krüger and Fichte try to find a way to work with each other again and resolve the case.

Ein Ferienhaus am Fließ wird in Brand gesetzt und zerstört, und ein Politiker wird ermordet. Fichte, Luise Bohn und Krüger suchen auf unterschiedlichen Wegen Brandstifter und Täter. Sie stoßen in einer psychiatrischen Klinik auf eine Patientin, Maya Wiechmann, die an einer dissoziativen Identitätsstörung leidet und bei der beide Fälle überraschend zusammenlaufen. Eine geheimnisvolle Frau taucht bei Krügers Bauwagen auf und warnt ihn vor einer Gefahr. Am selben Tag wird die Leiche von Gernwart Voss gefunden, Lokalpolitiker des Landkreises Oberspreewald-Lausitz, der für die Verteilung von Fördermitteln des Strukturwandels zuständig ist. Angesichts dieses Verbrechens informiert Krüger Luise Bohn und Fichte über seine mysteriöse "Warnerin". Luise und Fichte folgen allerdings der Spur eines Brandstifters, der in der Nähe der Leiche ein Ferienhaus angezündet hat. Krüger erkennt in Maya Wiechmann die geheimnisvolle Besucherin. Er befasst sich mit der Psyche von Maya, die laut ihrer empathischen Betreuerin, der Psychologin Jenny Trumaschek, in sechs verschiedene Persönlichkeiten aufgespalten ist. Doch nun scheint sich in der verstörten Maya eine siebte Person breitgemacht zu haben. Wer ist diese siebte Person? Als Fichte und Luise bei ihren Ermittlungen im Mordfall Voss über Umwege schließlich auch in der psychiatrischen Klinik landen, sorgt die Enttarnung der siebten Person für eine unerwartete Wendung und zur Aufklärung der beiden Fälle und ihrer Zusammenhänge.
