According to THR, 20th Century Studios is looking to reboot The Maze Runner franchise based on the best-selling novels by James Dashner. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) to write the script for the new film.
The Maze Runner was released in 2014 and followed a group of memory-wiped teenagers who are trapped in a walled area known as the Glade. The only way out lies beyond an ever-changing maze, which is filled with deadly mechanical creatures. The film was followed by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials in 2015 and Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2018.
Before you start getting up in arms over 20th Century Studios rebooting a franchise which wrapped up less than a decade ago, sources say that this project won’t be a redo of the original story or a direct sequel. Instead, the producers hope to make it a “continuation of the story...

Jack Paglen (Transcendence) is in talks to write a new Maze Runner film for 20th Century Studios, Deadline can confirm.
While details as to the plot of the film are under wraps for the moment, it’s described as a continuation of the story of the last three films, released between 2014 and 2018, rather than a direct sequel.
Based on the dystopian YA book series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where a group of young survivors must navigate deadly mazes, treacherous landscapes, and sinister organizations as they uncover the truth about their past and fight for their freedom. Wes Ball directed the original 2014 film, as well as sequels Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), all ahead of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario starred in the films, which grossed over $948 million worldwide in total.

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

Amazon MGM‘s Play Dirty is ready to announce its female lead for director Shane Black’s upcoming film. Joining Mark Wahlberg for Black’s crime thriller is Rosa Salazar. Lakeith Stanfield also stars, with a script written by Black, Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Play Dirty focuses on the “professional thief Parker (Wahlberg), who, after being double-crossed and left for dead, sees his hunt for revenge bring with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But even with the help of his partner, actor-slash-con artist Grofield (Stanfield), he’ll still need to outsmart a South American dictator, the New York mob, and the world’s richest man if he hopes to stay alive.”
Rosa Salazar’s Play Dirty role remains a mystery. However, the film is inspired by Donald E Westlake’s Parker crime novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.

Throwing a bunch of teenagers into some sort of Gladiator-style arena is the pinnacle of young adult dystopian fiction, executed to perfection in franchises like "The Hunger Games." While "The Maze Runner" films also follow the same principle, the worldbuilding here is markedly different, woven deftly with interesting characters and plot developments that make it such an intriguing premise. With three movies that map the trajectory of such a grim world and its inhabitants, "The Maze Runner" emerges as a staple for those who wish to immerse themselves in its labyrinthine action and fantastical setting.
As "The Maze Runner" films are rather overlooked, at least in comparison to blockbuster offerings within the same genre, it can be a bit confusing for casual fans to denote its viewing order. Moreover, things get more complicated once we venture into its sprawling source material — James Dashner's "Maze Runner" novels extend beyond its theatrical counterparts,...

How much sympathy do average working people have for Hollywood actors? Not much, I suspect. Fancy trailers, high-end catering, and eye-watering salaries are not the hallmarks of a tough gig. However, it's not all luxury and dollar signs, especially in the extravagant science fiction genre. On-set accidents have injured performers such as Charlize Theron, who was nearly paralyzed while making "Æon Flux," and Carrie-Ann Moss, whose botched cartwheel in "The Matrix" caused a nasty ankle injury
Such incidents remind us of why stunt people are needed to protect a production's cast and crew from accidents and injuries. But what about the threat of illness? Who is responsible for that and what danger does it pose to a multi-million dollar project with a tight schedule and a tighter budget? Well, a lesser danger than injury, it seems, but there is still a precedent for actorly illnesses -- and the causes range...

The film opened through Viva Pictures Distribution on an estimated $4.3m in 324 theatres and has sparked violent protests in India, and calls from a member of India’s pro-Hindu ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for the beheading of actress Deepika Padukone.
Meanwhile in a considerably less dramatic development, Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure starring Dylan O’Brien opened top on an estimated $23.5m on 3,787 sites.
The debut came in some 29% behind the $30.3m 2015 debut posted by Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and roughly 38% behind the $32.5m 2014 release of The Maze Runner, when unadjusted for inflation. In real terms, the percentage lags increase...

Despite a 25% decline compared to the opening for its predecessor, Fox's Maze Runner: The Death Cure still managed a #1 finish at the weekend box office. Meanwhile, Entertainment Studios saw Hostiles deliver a solid performance as it expanded nationwide, Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Greatest Showman continue to hold strong, The Shape of Water expands with strong numbers on the heels of its 13 Oscar nominations and Viva's Padmaavat secures a spot in the top ten despite playing in just 324 theaters. All told, the weekend's top twelve was still down ~7% compared to last year as January has slowed to a crawl. With an estimated $23.5 million Fox's Maze Runner: The Death Cure topped the weekend box office. Carrying the largest budget of the three films ($62m) in the franchise, while not an unexpected debut, it remains a disappointing one as Death Cure comes in ~$7 million behind the debut...

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure” leads a very successful post-Oscar nomination weekend for 20th Century Fox, hitting tracker expectations with a $23.5 million opening weekend from 3,787 screens to take the No. 1 spot and giving the final installment in the “Maze Runner” trilogy a $105 million global total. The opening for “Death Cure” is down 23 percent from the $30.6 million made by “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” back in September 2015, but this was to be expected after this threequel’s release was delayed for a year following an on-set injury sustained by its lead star, Dylan O’Brien. “Maze Runner”...

Sony behemoth squares up to Fox challenger in sixth weekend.
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle has led international box office for the past two sessions and will struggle to make it three in a row with the wide expansion this weekend of Fox’s Maze Runner: The Death Cure.
Jumanji has amassed $465.2m through Sony Pictures Releasing International and there are no new debuts this weekend. Meanwhile Blumhouse horror Insidious: The Last Key stands at $73.6m with no new markets either.
Fox International executives report an early $17.9m for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, which ventures into 69 territories led by China, the UK, Brazil, Spain, Russia, and Argentina.
2015 release Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials opened on $13.3m in China, $4.3m in the UK, and $2.6m in Brazil, $1.8m in Spain, and $861,000 in Argentina (numbers were unavailable for Russia), so Fox executives are hopeful the running total will climb to around $45m including holdovers by Monday.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure should have no trouble sprinting to the top of the North American box office this weekend with a debut of $20 million or more.
The threequel is the final installment in the successful YA film series adapted from James Dashner's dystopian-themed books.
From 20th Century Fox, The Death Cure was originally set to hit theaters a year ago, but its release delayed when franchise star Dylan O'Brien was injured while filming. Wes Ball directed all three films, the last of which, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials launched to $30.6 million in September 2015. The...

Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Both 12 Strong and Den of Thieves performed better than expected last weekend, but neither could top box-office juggernaut Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. That movie’s January reign may come to an end this weekend with the final installment of the Maze Runner trilogy hitting theaters. That is the only new movie opening wide this week as many of the Oscar movies go wider this weekend after the nominations were announced earlier this week. Let’s see if you should check out Maze Runner: The Death Cure or catch up on some of the Oscar movies you may have missed.

Welcome (back) to the Scorch!
Picking up where 2015’s “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” left off — and bringing the best and most kinetic of the post-apocalyptic Ya sagas to an exhausting finish — “The Death Cure” reintroduces us to a fallen world where a killer virus has decimated most of the population. In the trilogy’s first installment, a handful of twentysomethings with flawless skin escaped from a deadly labyrinth and opened the secret door at the end only to discover (dun dun dunn!!!) Patricia Clarkson! The sequel found our photogenic heroes learning that they are immune to the pathogen that continues to shred our species, and had been used as glorified lab rats by the shady government agency hoping to repurpose their bodily fluids into some kind of cure.
That shady government agent’s name: Wckd (short for World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department, and pronounced “wicked”). Because no matter...

In the epic finale to the Maze Runner saga, Thomas leads his group of escaped Gladers on their final and most dangerous mission yet. Anyone who makes it out alive will get answers to the questions the Gladers have been asking since they first arrived in the maze. MaryAnn’s quick take… It’s tormented hotheads all around with a hero and villain who are almost indistinguishable and same-old spy stuff racing to a seen-it, been-there ticking-clock finale. I’m “biast” (pro): love a good action movie

MaryAnn’s quick take… The franchise finally overstays its welcome with this cacophony of CGI spectacle, a contrived and confusing plot, and a newly cruel and stupid Jack Sparrow. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the original trilogy…

Dafne Keen was the breakout star of Logan, but where could Laura go next? Some thoughts...
This article contains Logan spoilers, lots of them.
It seems fair to say that Dafne Keen blew the bloody doors off of Logan, making a huge impression in her first performance as Laura, Aka X-23, Wolverine’s clone daughter who was cooked up in a lab by Richard E Grant. Keen’s performance began quiet and neatly understated, but soon exploded with a berserker rage that would make Hugh Jackman’s clawed crusader proud to be her dad.
It’s been well established that Jackman’s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier will not return after the events of Logan, leaving Keen’s X-23 as our only hope for a follow-up. Let’s have a look at the chances of that happening, and what it might look like if it does.

I loved watching the TV show CHiPs when I was growing up, and now there's a feature film adaptation starring Michael Peña and Dax Shepard. The first trailer was just released for the movie, and you can tell that they tried to capture that 21 Jump Street movie vibe and humor, but it just doesn't hit that bar. I guess that's what happens when you aren't as insanely talented as Jump Street writers and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Maybe you'll like what you see in the trailer, though! I personally wasn't impressed. CHiPs was written and directed by Shepard, and this is the synopsis:
In CHiPs, Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (Chp) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a...

“Blair Witch” (Lionsgate), the second sequel to the groundbreaking 1999 low-budget horror smash, looks to have the best chance to top Clint Eastwood’s “Sully” (Warner Bros.) for #1 this weekend. “Sully” has the edge against an eclectic slate of familiar follow-ups to prior hits.
With “Sully” included, the weekend showcases three Oscar-winning directors —Clint Eastwood, Oliver Stone (“Snowden,” Open Road) and Ron Howard (limited release “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week,” Abramorama)—plus “Bridget Jones’s Baby” (Universal), starring Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger, taking a third pass on her best-known role.
The weekend could be hard-pressed to equal its equivalent last year, when “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” and “Black Mass” combined open to $53 million, well ahead of what this weekend promises. But “Sully” might push the Top Ten weekend total close to 2015’s $93 million.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Dylan O'Brien is recovering nicely and will return in the sequel. Young actor Dylan O'Brien gained fame as the hero's best friend in MTV's Teen Wolf and then proved his bona fides in The Maze Runner. His performance as Thomas, a young man who wakes up with no memories in a strange new world and proves to be a heroic leader, resonated with audiences and the movie was a big success worldwide. Its sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, did almost as well, and production began earlier this year on the third installment in the series, Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Unfortunately, in March O'Brien was injured on the set in Vancouver, Canada and he had to be hospitalized. Production was shut...

Following the serious injury that befell lead star Dylan O’Brien on set, production on Ya sequel The Maze Runner: The Death Cure is now set to resume come February, 2017.
Word comes by way of Deadline, confirming that the release of Wes Ball’s final entry into the series has been pushed an entire year to accommodate this unforeseen accident. That means The Death Cure won’t make a beeline for theaters until January 12, 2018, though given the extent of O’Brien’s injuries and the fact that the threequel was once delayed indefinitely, this is welcome news nonetheless.
Production initially ground to a halt earlier this year when the actor was said to have fractured either his cheekbone or orbital socket after an action set piece went awry. Fox had originally planned to assemble The Maze Runner crew much sooner following the accident – filming was due to recommence back in...

The cast and crew for that adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita seems to be slowly coming together. First, Robert Rodriguez took up the directing mantle from James Cameron, who’s apparently still co-writing the film with Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island). Then we learned that Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) would be stepping into the titular role as an amnesiac, martial-arts-expert cyborg bounty hunter. (Yes, this is based on a manga comic book series. How did you guess?) And now we’re finding out that two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz is likely to take on another big part in the film.
As The Hollywood Reporter tells it, the 59-year-old Austrian-German actor is in talks to play Doctor Dyson Ido, the cybersurgeon who finds Alita in a junkyard and trains her as a master Hunter Warrior. Before you consider that this will be the second time that...

With production set to begin this fall, Robert Rodriguez is slowly but surely putting together his cast for Alita: Battle Angel. We already know that Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials actress Rosa Salazar will star, and now THR is telling us that Christoph Waltz may join her.
For those who’ve been following the project, you’ll know that Salazar will play Alita, “an amnesiac female cyborg who becomes a bounty hunter.” Should negotiations with Waltz work out, he’ll play Dr. Dyson Ido, a “cybersurgeon who becomes Alita’s mentor.”
As with Ghost in the Shell, this seems to be another case of Hollywood whitewashing anime stories when it comes to adapting them for film, and you can bet that fans won’t be too happy about it. Battle Angel may still cast some actors of Japanese descent, but it’s clear that the producers and the studio are looking elsewhere for the leads.
