Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz and Dennis Quaid will star in Kin. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps will serve as producers alongside Jeff Arkuss, David Gross and Jesse Shapira, who will also finance the film through No Trace Camping.
Jonathan and Josh Baker will co-direct the feature, based on their short film Bag Man that premiered at SXSW 2015.

Lionsgate emerged victorious in an auction at the Toronto International Film Festival and will finance and distribute “Kin,” a sci-fi thriller starring Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz and Dennis Quaid, a source close to the project confirmed to TheWrap. Jonathan and Josh Baker will direct the film, which is based on their short “Bag Man.” Daniel Casey wrote the story about an ex-con (Reynor) and his adopted brother who are forced on the run while being chased by a vengeful criminal (Franco). Quaid will play their father, and Kravitz is cast as a fellow traveler they meet along the way.

James Franco’s been busy adapting literary works and tweaking Lifetime Originals of late, but he’s still open to taking direction from someone else on occasion. The actor will raise the question of Why Him? in a new comedy that co-stars Bryan Cranston, and he’s also just signed on to star in a feature-length film from Jonathan and Josh Baker. Empire reports that the Bag Man directors will expand on that short film for the sci-fi thriller Kin, which will star Dennis Quaid and Zoe Kravitz, in addition to Franco.
The Baker brothers’ short film won over SXSW attendees last year with its understated narrative about an unnamed 12-year-old Harlem boy who heads out on a solo journey to the countryside. Judah Bellamy gave a moving performance as the boy with baggage, but Kin will give the character some companions and a new storyline. The upcoming film will...

When filmmakers Jonathan and Josh Baker premiered their humble short Bag Man at SXSW 2015, few would have predicted that the understated sci-fi flick would go on to become a breakout hit. Fast forward ten months and change and the Aussie brothers are now on the verge of bringing Bag Man to the big screen in the form of Kin, a sci-fi thriller that has zeroed in on its preliminary cast.
That’s according to Deadline, with the outlet reporting today that Jack Reynor, James Franco, Zoe Kravitz and Dennis Quaid have all signed deals to star in the feature film, one that will markedly expand the scope and premise of Jonathan and Josh Baker’s Bag Man for the moviegoing masses.
Screenwriter Daniel Casey helped dot the i’s and cross the t’s of Kin, which will now follow a “recently-released ex-con (Reynor) and his adopted younger brother who...

Soon to be seen in Nacho Vigalondo‘s highly-anticipated Colossal at Tiff, and next year in the upcoming Ocean’s Eight alongside a massive cast, Anne Hathaway has another project in her sights. She’s signed on to star in and produce an adaptation of Jenny Mollen‘s novel Live Fast Die Hot according to Variety, which is not a cross-over spin-off on the Die Hard and Fast & Furious series.
In fact, it is a collection of personal essays from the author that delve into adulthood, responsibility, and proving that you can travel alone without ending up in a Taken-esque scenario. Mollen herself has a particular set of skills as a writer and actress who lives in New York, who has appeared in films such as Crazy, Stupid, Love and TV episodes on Wilfred and Girls. The adaptation is in association with Warner Bros and one can check back for more details.

The tropes of American independent filmmaking — in this cast, the tale of a latchkey child wandering the city — are a deceptive red herring in the surprising and rewarding short film Bag Man, by commercial directors Jonathan and Josh Baker. Currently making the online rounds, the film blends a sensitive, character-based tale of a Harlem youth left on his own with… well, I won’t spoil the surprise. The directors were interviewed over at Short of the Week: Bag Man feels like it takes a narrative-first approach to filmmaking, serving up its audience an intriguing and well-considered storyline, how did […]...

Wow. Every once in a while a film comes along that stops you in your tracks, reminds you why you love great films, and shows us that there's still real talent out there. This short film, titled Bag Man, came across my desk this week and it's actually a must watch. From filmmakers Jonathan & Josh Baker, the film tells the story of a young boy who leaves New York City to venture upstate with a mysterious dufflebag in hand. What is he hiding? You'll have to watch and find out. I love everything about this - the setup and payoff is perfect, the short flows smoothly and never drags, it's gorgeously shot and looks great, the VFX are fantastic. Along with Envoy, this is genuinely one of the best shorts I've seen in a while, and I will be following these guys. Full synopsis for Bag Man: The understated...
