Die Fledermaus
boblipton3 April 2018
This is the 26th short talking film shot by Deutsch Bioskop in their series of talking pictures from 1906 through the end of the decade. Like the others, it consists of performers coming onto the stage, hitting their marks right in front of the camera, and performing (or miming, with the sound recorded separately) a song.

Here's it's a song from DIE FLEDERMAUS, and to the modern eye it is stodgy. Even for 1907, it was not particularly cinematic. However, given the difficulty of recording something like this at all, sight and sound, it certainly has value, both as a milestone in history -- sound films would not become practical and commercial for another twenty years, after all -- and as a record of the style of performance in 1908.
