Just Pure Fun

Warning: Spoilers
Arrow's tone is perfect. It took a lot of inspiration from Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and it has suited the series to perfection. But every once in awhile we all enjoy an episode that is straight fun. And that was tonight's episode. The mix of The Flash and Arrow's team made this quite possibly the most entertaining Arrow has ever been. And like last nights Flash episode I really enjoyed that the writers created a legit reason for the shows to clash.

First off, as I mentioned in my Flash review, I love the scenes in the Arrow cave with everyone giving their two cents about the current situation. It made for some of the best lines of the night. Lyla drooling over Flash, Cisco videotaping our hooded heroes talking, and Flash doing the Salmon Ladder all made for laugh out loud moments. Cisco is a character that has had his ups and downs. His jokes either hit or completely miss, but tonight he really shined. I would welcome his presence every now and then on Arrow. It was also cool seeing the unlikely interactions such as Barry and Lance. Or Bart Allen as he called him. And Oliver puzzled over what Lance's job actually is at this point was a nice touch. It's also worth mentioning again just how cool it is when Blake Neely combines his two scores for the shows into one. I can only hope Hans Zimmer does this just as well in Batman v Superman.

As for the action this week, I thought it was really well done. Captain Boomerang is a tough villain to pull off considering how cheesy he is. But I thought the writers made him a formidable opponent that will be welcomed back anytime soon. More on that later. Side note, I liked how Roy is having a tough time in the field. He doesn't always win each fight and his use of what seemed to be small bo-staffs was a nice addition. It was interesting to here Ollie call him Speedy for the first time tonight, as it's usually Thea with that name. And once again how cool was it to see Flash and Arrow fight alongside each other? Not only did their banter seem so much like Batman & Superman but I really thought the writers did a good job of adding in a new flavor to what seemed to be a recycled conflict from last night.

As for the flashbacks, I enjoyed them once again. I liked how much of the dialogue and conflict related to present day and showed Ollie's constant struggle with coping with what he does. It did seem a little strange that Waller wouldn't just interrogate the man himself or put her number one guy on the job instead of letting hundreds of people die. But I guess that shows how little she cares for those peoples lives at this point. Back to Boomerang, I am pleased to see he didn't end up with Waller and surprised to hear he's with Slade? I can see that not ending too well for the Arrow crew as it has been confirmed that Slade will be back come the 14th episode. Another little nugget included Cisco giving Ollie a bit of a suit upgrade, although I doubt it will look too different but it was nice to see a change. After all it has been over 50 episodes with it.

So whether it was the ongoing "were not married" joke, or The Flash climbing the Salmon Ladder, tonight was possibly the most fun I have had with Arrow. I thought the screenplay/writing was as good as it has been. The character interactions were hilarious and it actually made sense that all of them would need to work together. It's one of the best episodes Arrow has had to offer yet.

The Brave and the Bold
SpideyVerse2320 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The second part of the crossover event does not disappoint as Barry, Cisco and Caitlin come over Starling City to help catch a new villain called Captain Boomerang who is after Lyla. Roy, who didn't go over to Central City, gets to meet some of Team Flash, with him immediately liking their presence. Barry and Oliver have a lot of moments in this episode with Barry helping Oliver realize that he is not the monster he thinks himself to be and that he still has some light in him. Team Flash also realizes how dangerous this life can be during their time with Team Arrow.

The flashbacks show Oliver learning how to torture people, and it was actually interesting to watch.

I've got a bad feeling about this...
A_Different_Drummer28 January 2015
Disclaimer: I "get" these ex post facto episode reviews are scrutinized mainly by die-hard fans and anyone who doesn't grasp the total wonderfulness is often hissed and boo'd. But, as I reviewer, I call them as I see them.

Here are my notes:

* generally I have been a big fan of Arrow as my prior reviews show. I have criticized, and will criticize until someone listens, their over-use of flashbacks. I grew up with David Carradine in Kung Fu so I am no stranger to flashbacks. But this writing team needs to go cold turkey with a 7 step program before they hurt someone

* fave episode so far -- the "secret origins of Felicity Smoak" - seriously cool

* before continuing, let us do something different, (a la Monty Python) and peek behind the scenes. Forget the Dems and the Republicans, Google and Microsoft, the real battle is between DC and Disney/Marvel. Both have imported a truckload of MBAs with the sole mission to monetize every hero, slogan, weapon, idea, motto, dustmop, broom and deli sandwich in the archives.

* both teams have already had misses. Superman has been redone so many times even his mother wouldn't recognize him. And I mean both mothers. And Nolan's ode to Batman involved ageing the poor guy into senility. Nothing good will come of that. Over at Marvel, their smartest move, one of the smartest in the history of the art world, was to bring in Team Whedon. Which lead to Avengers 1 and AGENTS OF SHIELD. So far. And they are just warming up

* when did Nick Fury become a black man?

* I am not a fan of FLASH (think a huge casting error was made, or they sold out whatever integrity was left to pre-teens) and I also have some issues with AGENT CARTER.

* I absolutely have problems with the "forced pairing" of Flash and Arrow, and especially the horrid speech where Arrow explains to the Flash the difference between their cities. Don't look now, but the suits just took over the production and that NEVER ends well. That speech will live in infamy I think

* I am astonished that earlier reviewer for this 'sode said it was "fun." To replay the most risqué (and most overlooked) line from Whedon's Avengers 1, "I think you and I remember this episode very differently"

Forced and kinda stupid
born_naughty1 April 2016
To start, I have not seen a single episode of The Flash, yet. Maybe if I did, more of this episode would make sense. However, what is obvious to me is that the styles of both shows simply don't match. When the two new guys join the "Arrow cave" they act like comic book fans going to a convention. Quotes like "this is all so freaking awesome" really don't fit the darker style of Arrow. In part, that's what this episode was about. Some of the discussions between Arrow and Flash are exactly about the differences between the two cities. But for that story to progress the writers made Arrow do stuff that he hasn't done before in other episodes: torture bad guys. Another thing that doesn't make much sense is that if Flash is so powerful and Starling City is so much more violent as Central city then why doesn't Flash just clean house in Starling? If they used Oliver's strategic insight and Flash's superior superpowers together wouldn't Starling be cleaned up a lot faster? Litterly. So not only does this episode feel forced and the styles clash simply doesn't fit, it really hurts the credibility of the rest of this show. For the record though, I loved the first two seasons of Arrow and from what I've seen I think I might like The Flash as well. Just saying that this review does not reflect on either show as a whole.

Doesn't belong here...

I just started watching this show...

As I started to watch this episode and noticed that the "previously on..." didn't make sense. I continued to watch...the whole thing just seemed out of place. Only reason I am even here as I was checking the title and number of the episode to make sure I wasn't watching out of order.

On a side note, in season one, the scene that scrolls by the front of the Queen mansion is what started my critiquing of this show...the power tower, cam locks and power cables... It wouldn't have bothered me...but you just keep reusing that scene...oh, and the blue police car leaving the SCPD HQ every time...regardless of the amount of flaws and a fair share of bad acting...I'm still watching. Call me a light comic book series fan, as I am no fan boy to anything really.

The previous persons comment about watching Flash was a good idea...but as I said, I'm not a fan boy...and I'm not a teen...same reason I haven't watch Gotham...the whole cast is kids.
