You have probably seen Christopher Nolan's Inception more than once, discussed Ari Aster's Midsommar with friends, rewatched Ridley Scott's Alien, and are now on the lookout for new discoveries, wondering where to find the gems of modern cinema.
In such cases, not the most talked about, but no less exciting projects come to the rescue.

Tarsem Singh, a master of striking productions that transport viewers into worlds that are unprecedented in their beauty and danger, made one of the most amazing films in 2006 that can be described as a "story within a story."
The main character ends up in a hospital where he meets a little girl who helps a man cope with pain. If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

The real story begins long before you know it in Desert Road, a very smart, trippy chiller that plays with the conventions of survival horror and takes them in a wholly unexpected and, ultimately, really quite moving direction. Making her directorial debut, Shannon Triplett shows a sophisticated grasp of genre dynamics, with a bold use of space — a stretch of the Mojave Desert doubling for Death Valley — that proves more and more gripping as the film’s mysteries unfold. At which point, its boundaries begin to blur, slipping between horror and sci-fi in a way that recalls a hypnotic blend of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s The Endless and Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls.
The woman in question is Clare Devoir (Kristine Froseth), a twentysomething photographer who is throwing in the towel after too many disappointments as a struggling artist in Los Angeles. Clare is driving home to...

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

As a fan who’s always ready to warp into the realms of time travel movies, my anticipation for Things Will Be Different was as high as my hopes for a DeLorean to appear on my driveway. Helmed by Michael Felker, in what marks his leap from editing to directing, with frequent collaborators Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Something in The Dirt) producing, this film is a time-twisting tale that packs a lot more than just temporal leaps.
Things Will Be Different throws estranged siblings Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) into a temporal tangle that’s more twisted than spaghetti in a black hole. After a diner meet-up goes awry, they find refuge in an abandoned farmhouse that’s more than it appears. What initially seems like a lucky escape turns into a chronal puzzle, ensnaring them in a time they can’t easily zip back from.

It’s Groundhog Day, a strange little holiday overshadowed by a popular Bill Murray comedy that sees his selfish character become a better person thanks to a bizarre time loop. It’s a fascinating concept that can turn downright sinister within the realm of horror.
So we’re celebrating Groundhog Day by revisiting ten horror and sci-fi time loop movies that bring suspense, terror, and sometimes laughs through messing around with time…
Haunter
From director Vincenzo Natali, Haunter brings a refreshing twist to a haunted house thriller through a time loop. Abigail Breslin stars as Lisa, a teen who slowly comes to realize that she’s a ghost stuck reliving the day she was murdered in 1985 along with her family, on a perpetual loop. Lisa also discovers that she can bend time to communicate with people in other timelines, eventually working with a teen currently living in her home to...

Here at /Film, we have talked quite a bit about how much we love genre-specific streaming services like Shudder or Alter, but does such a platform exist for fans of science fiction? Sure, there's always the Syfy channel on cable, but with so many people cutting cords and pivoting exclusively to streaming, you may be wondering where to find new and unique sci-fi stories. Well, may we interest you in Dust? A sister site of Alter, Dust comes from the folks at Gunpowder and Sky, the independent studio behind hits like "Summer of 84," "Tragedy Girls," "Her Smell," "Hearts Beat Loud," "Call Me Miss Cleo," and "Kobe Bryant's Dear Basketball."
A hub for the very best in sci-fi short films, Dust also has a live linear channel constantly playing from their selection of shorts, so if you don't feel like wading through the selections, you can let the service choose for you.

With both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes officially over, productions are quickly getting back underway. But for those wondering about Marvel’s “Daredevil: Born Again” series, well, it’s still a ways out, according to the series new directors.
In October, Marvel vets Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead were tapped to take over as directors on the remainder of production of the first season after the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes prompted filming to come to an abrupt halt this summer.
At the time, less than half of the 18-episode order was completed in production before a creative overhaul resulted in a shift in direction and leadership, which led to the arrival of Benson and Moorehead take on directorial oversight for the remainder.
Speaking to TheWrap about the finale of “Loki” Season 2, which they directed, Moorehead and Benson revealed that although the strikes have ended, they’re still very early in...

If you tuned into "Special Ops: Lioness" this summer, after watching the rest of screenwriter Taylor Sheridan's ever-growing catalog, you may have come away each week surprised to see the character Two Cups still kicking. That's because the actor who plays the CIA special agent in the Paramount+ thriller is James Jordan, who's become notorious for dying in Sheridan's projects. In fact, when asked about Jordan's recurring deaths in an interview with Deadline last year, Sheridan called the actor "my pinch-hitter, when I need to kill somebody."
Jordan's characters have died memorably in three Sheridan projects and counting, beginning all the way back with the 2017 film "Wind River." The film is a bleak look at the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women through the lens of two white investigators trying to solve a murder, and Jordan plays the despicable party responsible. His character, Pete, is revealed to...

Although Loki’s second season has been well received by fans and critics alike, most of the issues with the story so far have been about its nonsensical time travel plot, the scale (and impact) of its dying timelines, and Loki’s somewhat baffling need to save the Tva given that the multiverse is trying to free itself from He Who Remains’ temporal loom. In the penultimate episode of the season, the show deftly addresses all those issues, and forces us to accept that they were never really issues in the first place.
To date, the only real context we have had for new timelines dying has been squiggly lines on a screen, but “Science/Fiction” finally makes them feel real to us. At first, it’s just a McDonald’s meal disappearing from atop Sylvie’s car. Then, Loki’s bourbon vanishes. By the time we...

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is causing quite a buzz in the MCU, but fans hoping for a seamless continuation from the Netflix series may be in for some disappointment. The upcoming show is set to be a soft reboot, with not all key members of Daredevil’s team making a return.
Adding to the letdown, fans will witness several episodes where Daredevil won’t be in his iconic suit. The focus of the show is shifting towards a legal drama, exploring Daredevil’s life post-hanging up his vigilante identity. This parallels Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, trying to leave his past behind.
The studio’s decision to veer away from the current show is attributed to it being deemed “a bit boring.” Instead, they are taking a fresh approach, aligning more with the faithful comic version of the character. While some previously filmed content will be retained, many elements of the story will be reconstructed from scratch.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is one of the most hyped-up projects in the MCU currently. Although fans have been hoping that the show will, in some ways, continue where Netflix’s production left off. It’s been known for quite a while now that the show will instead be a soft reboot, with not all core members of Daredevil’s team returning to the screens.
Fans were also quite disappointed to learn that the show would feature quite a number of episodes where Daredevil does not suit up at all. The show was supposed to go in the direction of legal drama, focusing on Daredevil’s life after he drops his vigilante mantle, trying to put his past behind him, just like Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin.

Cannabis is known to have many medical benefits and can be helpful with conditions like cancer, chronic pain, and Ptsd. There is also evidence of marijuana being connected to spirituality and being used for ritualistic purposes throughout history. Trim Season is a fantastical and thought-provoking commentary on gender and the magical benefits of cannabis.
Trim Season was written by David Blair (The Triangle), Sean E. DeMott (American Satan), and Cullen Poythress, directed by Ariel Vida (Vide Noir), and produced by Paper Street Pictures. Vida was the production designer for Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s mind-bending films Something in the Dirt and The Endless, and if you’re familiar with the universe Benson and Moorhead have created, you will appreciate the imaginative and almost mythical Easter Eggs Vida incorporates into Trim Season.

Thanks to the auteur theory, as advanced by upstart French theorists at the influential film journal Cahiers du Cinéma in the '50s and '60s, we've fallen into the habit of viewing movies as the work of a singular artist. Of course, this theory is sound when we're discussing the work of Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Ingmar Bergman -- they had an identifiable visual style and revisited the same themes from film to film. The same applies to Boomer directors like Brian De Palma, Steven Spielberg, and Martin Scorsese, or modern masters like Quentin Tarantino, Kelly Reichardt, and Spike Lee.
On the set of a film, the director is head honcho, and the Directors Guild of America has fought hard to make sure the moviegoing public understands this. The director is the final name in the opening credits and gets a prominent placement on the poster. Sometimes, if they so choose,...

If you love the cultier end of the sci-fi/horror spectrum, chances are that Justin Benson_, one of the clearest distillations of their unique filmmaking voice – and they’re not done with creating original projects.
In fact, as they tell the Script Apart podcast, away from their Marvel work, the duo are beavering away on several of their own projects – one of which is a series not only set in the same continuity as The Endless (aka the ‘Shitty Carl Cinematic Universe’), but focusing once again on the characters of Aaron and Justin.
“Even now, nights and weekends are spent working on what is our next thing for that [independent output],” says Benson. “Which is essentially, what is hopefully a TV show – at smallest another indie film – in the Endless universe. That’s where we put all of our passion.” Moorhead adds: “The main characters are Aaron and Justin again. But that...

Fontaines D.C. have released their cover of Nick Drake’s cherished “‘Cello Song.” The recording serves as first single off of a forthcoming tribute project, The Endless Coloured Ways – The Songs of Nick Drake, out on July 7th via Chrysalis Records.
Adopting a different approach than Drake’s original (first released on 1969’s Five Leaves Left), Fontaines switch out the bustling acoustics and the titular cello for a driving backbeat, a soundscape of guitars, and a haunting melody that, all combined, use Drake’s same spark to light a whole new flame. Hearing vocalist Grian Chatten croon the final verse, “So forget this cruel world/ Where I belong/ I’ll just sit and wait/ And sing my song,” it makes one reflect on how Drake would feel if he could see the impact he’s made on so many artists since his tragic death in 1974. Watch the music video for Fontaines D.

It’s been a rough year and I know I’m not the only one. The harsh reality that the Covid-19 pandemic has become a part of everyday life, despite the fact that a lot of people continue to ignore it, coupled with the fact that just living day to day has become a major struggle for a lot of us this year, has led to folks looking for some form of escape, even if it’s brief. That’s where movies, television, and games come in. Movies are my escape. Movies make me happy. Talking to filmmakers about making movies makes me happy. I love all kinds of movies, but horror is my favorite genre. Horror is the genre I visit daily. I know I’ve said it in previous years, but damn, 2022 has been an amazing year for horror, which just so happens to be the genre most...

The Pitch: There are a lot, and I mean a lot of films about people dealing with addiction. Some instances, like "Requiem for a Dream," border on exploitation, while others, like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," highlight the shift in drug culture from feeling free and flying high to becoming broken and completely under the spell of illicit substances. Recovery is often portrayed through Oscar-bait dramas with weepy supporting casts, and seldom told through the perspective of the person actually pursuing sobriety. Something in the Dirt is the latest film from the filmmaking team of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Shot during the pandemic with a minimal crew it’s something of a return to the early days of their career shooting Resolution. Only this time they have ten years of experience shooting features to call on. The results are equal parts fascinating and frustrating.
Levi (Justin Benson) just needs a place to stay till he leaves Los Angeles, so he jumps on a non-lease apartment sight unseen. There he meets John (Aaron Moorhead) who’s been living in the building for ten or so years. But he’s never encountered anything like the strange light and floating objects the pair see in Levi’s apartment one afternoon. Welcome back to a new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where we’re diving into a freaky whirlpool of addiction, cosmic horror, and meta discussions about storytelling as we explore Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s debut feature, Resolution. Joining me for this surreal journey is Philip Yount, a graphic designer, metalhead, and cosmic horror enthusiast whom you likely know from the great Dead Ringers podcast (regulars may remember we had founder/co-host Nolan McBride on for a discussion on Lake Bodom). You can also catch Philip on his Twitch channel, where he’s likely painting fantasy miniatures or playing the odd game or two.
It was actually while guesting on a recent episode of Dead Ringers that I revealed myself to be unacquainted with the work of Monsieurs Benson and Moorhead, and since I’d already been looking for an excuse to chat with Philip about a movie...

"Moon Knight" may not have been exactly spotless, but it was Marvel's first foray into the fantasy/horror side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, the Disney+ series does not operate outside the inherent restrictions of its maker. However, it does push the boundaries from time to time. This is especially true when "Moon Knight" decides to delve even deeper into the supernatural, delivering an episode or two that truly feels like a subversion of the MCU. The "Indiana Jones"-lite narrative is often grounded by the shockingly intimate visuals, which speak to the roots of the filmmakers behind the camera.
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who directed two episodes of "Moon Knight" season 1, brought their own indie sensibilities to the big-scale effort. They had previously helmed low-budget, high-concept films like "Spring" and "The Endless," often acting as directors, producers, and lead actors due to monetary limitations. The filmmaking...

DIY filmmaking mavericks Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead continue their unique nesting doll cinematic universe with their latest. Something in the Dirt harkens back to their roots, offering up another introspective, intimate sci-fi tale centered around an unlikely comedic duo.

Isolation can do funny things to the mind. Even if you like spending time alone, isolation, and the silence that comes with it, is something different. Rather than calm and contentment, it can breed fear, distrust, and obsession. It can make you hallucinate with your eyes, ears, and mind. It can make you believe what you shouldn't and couldn't. It can make for very strange bedfellows. You have energy and thoughts with nowhere to go but the strangest shadowy corners, both metaphorical and all too real. Filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, like many during the past two years, turned the pandemic and its accompanying restrictions into an opportunity to explore another part of their story world, this time from the...

As recently reported, Marvel Studios has tweaked a good-sized chunk of its upcoming release schedule, shifting the release dates of five confirmed movies and taking one unannounced one off the calendar for now. The films that are moving include some biggies like Fantastic Four and Avengers: Secret Wars, but the whole thing – because any MCU moves tend to have a domino effect – seemed to start with the studio’s reboot of Blade being shot out of its November 2023 berth all the way to September 2024.
That was precipitated by the departure of director Bassim Tariq from the project, less than two months before production was scheduled to start, along with reports that the film’s screenplay needed quite a bit of work. Clearly Blade – which was first announced way back in July 2019 when star Mahershala Ali walked onstage wearing a hat bearing the movie’s title – is in a bit of a rough spot right now.

There’s a scene in David Fincher’s Zodiac in which Jake Gyllenhaal’s cartoonist turned investigator visits a prisoner, telling her that he’s looking for information about the Zodiac killer. “Figures,” she says. “You’ve got the look.”
John (Aaron Moorhead) and Levi (Justin Benson) have the look.
With films like Spring and The Endless under their belts, the directing duo are now expected to produce big things, and Something In The Dirt, which screened at 2022’s Fantasia and Frightfest, does not disappoint. That said, it’s very different from what some viewers might expect, its possibly supernatural element kept to a minimum in order to let it focus on something subtler. What matters here is not so much the phenomenon itself, but the way that the characters become obsessed with it, the rabbit holes they scurry down as they pursue all manner of possible leads, and the ease with which.

This post contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Sandman season one DC’s The Sandman Comics
The current state of DC Comics live-action adaptations may be up in the air, but there has been one bright spot in recent weeks. After more than a decade of false starts and development failures, Neil Gaiman‘s great Vertigo comic The Sandman has come to television screens. Even more surprising, it’s really good. Even as the show changes some details from the comics, downplaying its larger DC Universe connections, it still retains all of the beauty and horror that made the original series an enduring classic.
Best of all, the show has turned out to be a hit, both in terms of viewership and word-of-mouth buzz. So popular was the first season that Netflix dropped a surprise bonus episode, adapting two of the best stand-alone stories, “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Calliope.
